Only 17% of those polled feel it's down to the current manager while 40% blame his predecessor PLUS: 'Chosen One' banner threatened

John PetersBad knight: Ferguson was blamed by almost half the United fans polled
Manchester United fans blame former boss Sir Alex Ferguson for the club's current predicament under his beleaguered successor David Moyes.

A poll of fans conducted by United fanzine Red Issue has revealed 40.57 per cent of the supporters quizzed hold Ferguson, who hand-picked then-Everton boss Moyes as his replacement and insisted on the former Everton manager's appointment, responsible.

United owners, the Glazers, have been blamed by 32.55% of those canvassed, while 17.45% feel it is Moyes' fault that Premier League champions United being in seventh spot, 18 points points adrift of leaders Chelsea.

A further 4.25% feel it's down to United's players while - somewhat surprisingly - only 3.77% consider chief executive Ed Woodward to be responsible for the club's current plight.

Despite their vocal support for their team as they slid to a humiliating 3-0 defeat at home to arch-rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday, United fans are becoming increasingly disillusioned with their regression under Moyes.

If the Old Trafford giants go out of the Champions League to Olympiakos on Wednesday, the board will come under renewed pressure to act by sacking Moyes.

The Manchester derby next Tuesday against visitors City would then be likely to decide his fate.

One group of supporters are even are ready to rip down an Old Trafford banner hailing Moyes as ‘The Chosen One’ if the Reds come Acropolis against the men from Athens.

Shaun BotterillMaking a stand: Moyes banner may bite the dust if United do the same on Wednesday
The flag was installed at the Stretford End by supporters at the start of the season as an endorsement of Ferguson’s decision to select Moyes as his successor.

But growing disillusionment with the 50-year-old Scot has led to many fans wanting him out.

Mirror Sport has learned there are plans to remove the banner if Stretford End Flags - the group responsible for producing it and putting it up - do not pull it down.

The group today said it would resist calls from fans to have it removed and urged United supporters to get behind their team, irrespective of their feelings towards Moyes.

The Stretford End Flags official account today tweeted: "Tonight's focus should be on supporting the team, giving support to inspire the team to victory.

"Calls to take the Chosen One banner down will not be considered and the banner will remain up tonight as a symbol of support for the team, as we expect from the fans vocal support.

"We fully expect the Old Trafford crowd to be behind the team tonight as we seek victory on the pitch. Any removal of the banner will be seen by fans, the players and worldwide media as a call for the manager to go. Not needed during the game."

I think the blame is twofold. Ultimate blame is the selling of the club to the Glazers in 2005, and the f**king directors who signed off on the deal. Our squad got progressively weaker from that point on, despite the odd very good pickup. It's hard to compete in the transfer market when you're burdened by a 700 million quid debt with a 62 million quid annual interest bill. That's quite a hole in our annual revenue, and bloody galling that we rely on the benevolence of our hated seppo owners rather than the income generated by the club itself, which was the case pre-2005. The lesser blame lies with Sir Alex and the recruiting decisions he made since the Glazer takeover. His sheer personal will to win helped an inferior squad pick up 5 Premier League Titles and a Champions League (and reach another 2 finals where we lost to one of the greatest club teams of all time), but he ultimately failed to rebuild to the anywhere near the same standard which he had done twice previously. He really left Moyes on a hiding to nothing.

Well the key cut has happened. Now we justneed to cut a few useless/under-performing players. Nani, Evra, Ferdinand, Young, Valencia, Anderson, Fletcher, Rafael, Evans for a start.

Hmmm, perhaps it's easier to list the players who should definitely stay: De Gea, Jones, Januzaj, Mata, Carrick, Rooney, Van Persie, Welbeck, Zaha, Powell.

Will be interesting to see who takes on the position. A big job ahead, especially in the transfer market, and with the World Cup on time to do business will be shorter.

Interesting times.

Who knows? Club hasn't announced anything, and we know how reliable the English football press is with their rumours.

For years the boys had to understand the Scottish accent. Now they'll have to get used to the Dutch one. :)

I notice Smalling is in neither group? An oversight or he hasn't convinced you either way yet?

I'd keep Rooney, Van Persie, Zaha, Powell, Carrick, Mata, Januzaj, Jones, De Gea, Welbeck, Lingegaard (already leaving?), Evans. Buttner for depth at left back, didn't do terribly. Smalling I suppose, depth if nothing else plus we don't want to run into a home grown player situation in the future like City have by signing everyone on the planet and keeping nobody else. What are the going to do? They are no-where near their quota+reduced squad makes things even harder if they were going to fill it with youth players.

I have a soft spot for Fletcher and Valencia but might be time to move on from them.

Ferdinand, Evra, Vidic thanks for the memories, you'll all be well remembered. Rafael you did well at times but we need more. Young I never liked, always thought he was a waste of money. Useless. Nani was way too hit and miss but did have a very good 12-18 month period, was vital in one of the championships if I recall. I'll remember him well, if not with a bit of regret that he couldn't maintain consistency over the length of his stay. Ridiculous that Moyes forced the club to re-sign him on bigger money and then never gave him a look in. Why? What was the f**king point, Moyes?

Cleverley. Never rated him and thought he got games because he was a local/from the academy and they wanted to keep the tradition of bringing Giggs, Scholes, Beckham through the system etc going. Probably am too harsh on him, would love him to prove me wrong but might have to be at another club.

Anderson I always, ALWAYS, had faith was going to come good one day. The one day he was like 28 and I realised that day would never come. Bye-bye.

If I'm missing anyone then they are probably not of note. Fellani will be there at least one more year as they will hemorrhage money if they sell him now.
