Time to sell off the Parramatta Eels, urges business heavyweight Bill Moss

Former Macquarie Bank heavyhitter Bill Moss believes Parramatta must be privatised and is prepared to play a role in the process to prevent his beloved Eels from further inflicting more pain on long-suffering fans.

The Eels have lurched into yet another crisis, this time in the mishandling of Kieran Foran's contract, prompting fresh queries about the competence of those in charge. The club is a strong chance of earning its third wooden spoon in the space of four years despite consistently overspending its salary cap, which will result in a $525,000 fine and the prospect of starting 2016 four competition points in arrears. The latest dramas come on the back of yet another toxic election cycle which again put the club into the headlines for the wrong reasons.

Moss, a multi-millionaire businessman and lifelong Eels fan, believes the best way to bring business acumen to the dysfunctional club is to sell it off.

"I reckon it's time to privatise the Eels," Moss told Fairfax Media.

"The current model just doesn't work. For the fans' sake, it should be privatised. There are problems in the structure, problems in the management, problems in the way it is run. A private company would run this a lot more efficiently and streamlined.

"I'd encourage anyone out there who is interested in privatisation to start a dialogue because I believe it's time we took a serious look at privatising the Parramatta Eels.

"[The Foran contract] is bread and butter stuff that they can't manage right.

"The only way to get serious discussions about privatisation is to put it into play and who knows what will come out of it."

Moss has twice attempted to lend his own business expertise to Parramatta, only to be turned away. Initially, he was offered up to the board as an "independent" director, but the motion - which required 75 per cent of members to vote in favour of it - was shot down. He then attempted to bring the big end of town to the blue and golds via his 'Premiership Club' networking venture, but the bold project was also a casualty of club politics.

Moss was initially against selling off the club but is now convinced it's the only way to stop factionalism and mismanagement.

"You get to the point where you actually appoint people to run it as a business," Moss said.

"Parramatta's caught in the middle with people where there isn't a lot of business acumen there. You've got fans who are passionate, you've got ex-footballers - it's time for a professional management group to run this thing and look at how to access this incredible wealth that exists in Western Sydney for business potential.

"Who would have thought, if you roll back a few years, that the family that owns Presto Foods would have bought the Wanderers? They need passionate people who have got money and want to be involved in the privatisation. They can get together, talk about it with the NRL and put a proposal forward for the future. That's what the fans deserve, they really do.

"It would be nice to see Parramatta win a premiership before I die."

Asked if he was the potential white knight the Eels needed, Moss said: "I would be happy to try and help facilitate [privatisation] because it's in the interests of the team.

"I couldn't do it on my own but I would be happy to be part of a syndicate and would be prepared to work with other people to get good outcomes.

"There are endless opportunities here that no one has explored because there is no discussion. I'd love to see a discussion for 12 months on how you privatise the Eels. It's about looking at how you unlock the value in Sydney to get a team to win the competition."

Fans get to still wave and shout for their team but all the wealth/profits falls only into private hands. Yep, that's the plan.

yep, because owning a rugby league team is a good business investment

You can not hope to have a professional organisation when it's run by unprofessional people. His characterisation of the boards ability is spot on & it's where all the clubs problems stem from, every single one, they set the standard for the entire organisation & the current Eels board is entirely out of their depth for a professional sporting club and business.

If this week's efforts continue, there's not going to be any fans left.

Once things settle down and those antagonists rattling doomsday cages fade away most fans will come back passionately as our team becomes successful on the field again. The fans really is the last of our major concerns. What we lose on the swings we'll gain on the roundabout.

One is community driven which means it has a real soul determining everything about the life of this communities club while the other is private-enterprise without a community soul. You can only fake a soul for so long before the truth of being a soulless impostor kills everything of the community. It's up to the Eel's community determination to resolve all the issues and move on being united as a successful club. This is our best and only option, both short and long-term. Selling this club out from the very large Eels community is not an option. It is a cultural tradition we are confronting here.

I wish I could share your optimism, but sadly I can't. This week has been highly embarrassing for all connected with Parra. If Foran leaves, I can only hope it's the final straw before massive changes occur at the club, whether that be privatisation or the NRL running the show.

so his true agenda finally comes out

we dodged a bullet there.

Well, it's an agenda I can certainly get on board with.
f**k the shit we've been putting up with. I'm sick of feuding factions, backstabbing, poor decisions, unwarranted sackings, dismal business acumen, and all the other shit.
And the on-field performance has been nothing short of disgraceful.

This is an embarrassment of a sporting club.
I've never been ashamed to be a fan of the Eels. Not through all the misery we've been through.
I'm sad to say I am now.

I'm this f**king close to giving up on the NRL altogether. Without the Eels, I couldn't give a shit about the sport. And the Eels right now are not giving me any reason to love them anymore.

This might be the thing to get the owners of the NRL licence to become professional. Depending on who is going to be in this take over I may be voting for it. Hopefully it turns out like Rusty's take-over of Souths and not every other failed private take-over of an NRL club.

Maybe Simon, the Yellow Wiggle can buy us.

At least the kids will enjoy the halftime entertainment.

Simon Baker and Mick Dundee too. Surely Mick has enough $$ from Crocodile Dundee repeats on TV to have a shot.

Pull your head out of year arse Casper, this club is f**ked. Something has to change,
I wouldn't let this Board run a chook raffle let alone a multi million dollar business.

Let's not listen to one of the more successful CEO's of the last 20 years I'd feel much more secure in the knowledge of a bloke that couldn't even run a simple Plumbing business.

I was in favour of privatisation up until this whole thing went down over the last couple of days. Now, I'm not.

I've said in the other thread that the worst thing about this episode is what has gone on here, and I stand by that. But I also stand by the fact that shit happens in a democracy (which are generally filled with idiots, anyways) and we have the right to make those mistakes with our choices.

We should decide who runs our Club. Sure, it means those who won't (or can't) let go of their politics will embarrass themselves regularly but I'd rather read thirty pages of drivel than risk the likes of Spags ever get the chance to buy this Club.

Privatisation isn't the holy grail.

Titans, Knights and Manly have all had their fair share of shit going on due to privatisation.

The Donkeys have worked due to the majority ownership of news, but it's a soulless corporate shell.

The Storm has had almost endless millions poured into it, without which they would probably have died a quiet death years ago.

The Bunnies model has had it's problems, but seems to be the best of the lot, the members still have the right of veto through the member company, yet the owners can still control the day to day running of the club.

If the Eels were to look at privatisation, that would be the model I'd look at. Though it may not be the most attractive to a potential owner/s.

Perhaps though the best answer lies in changing our constitution to address the farce that full board elections have become.
