Former Kiwis captain Quentin Pongia has died after an ongoing battle with cancer.

The former New Zealand test front-rower underwent surgery last November to remove a bowel tumour, following which he told nine.com.au: "I'm on the mend now and pray I can overcome this moving forward."

However, New Zealand Rugby League chief executive Greg Peters confirmed to the Heraldthey received the news of his death today.

"He's had cancer for sometime, as most people would know, and it's just finally, unfortunately taken him," Peters said.

"He was an icon of the game, a great bloke and a fearless player. He had a huge identity in the game during his playing career and it's just really tragic to see cancer take another great man way too early."

Greg Inglis has entered rehabilitation as the Rabbitohs legend struggles to adapt to his life in retirement.

Rabbitohs and Souths Cares ambassador Greg Inglis has entered a facility to undergo treatment to assist with and support his mental health.

On behalf of Greg and his family, we ask the media and the public to respect their privacy.

No further comment will be made by the Rabbitohs, Greg, his management or his family at this time.

Pretty sure that he is on the back end of a marriage split, so he has a lot on his plate. Being in full time care will help him find his feet. It's a shame that the Bunnies had to release this to head off the sleazy journos jumping all over it.

I just had an idea to speed up the game
get the bunker to check every putdown as soon as a try is scored

that way if there's a fumble they can tell the ref immediately and it saves lost time

how often has the ref sent a try up checking for interference or whatever they clear that then find out it was a knock-on anyway

Interference would mean a penalty though. A fumble wouldn't. So they still need to check it.
