50% salary cap dispensation for Union converts ?

With the recent comments from star All Black Ardie Savea that he would like to try his hand in league, does anyone think that trying the English Super Leagues rule of only 50% of a Union converts contract comes under the salary cap could work in the NRL ?

Savea said that All Blacks openly talk about switching to league but the prospect of taking a pay cut and potentially failing at league stops any of them from trying. A player of Saveas standard would need a contract offer of a million a season to switch. There's no way a NRL club is going to risk using a million of their cap on an unproven player but if only 500k of his contract came under the cap there would be plenty of interest from NRL clubs.

If some top Union players switched to league it would bring a huge amount of interest in the NRL from overseas markets. That opens new advertising, sponsors and TV rights money.

Obviously, this would be open to massive rorting for players in Australia switching codes so the 50% salary cap dispensation would only be for foreign Union players.

Pass.

The way things are going if these guys want to stay near home League will be about the only feasible option for all but the tippy top anyways. Australian Union is set to drag NZ down with it the way things are going.

We're never competing with Frog money either way. Imagine the horror of getting paid outrageous money to play footy in La Rochelle or Toulouse...

I'd try this at the same time we are ready to introduce a second NZ side to the NRL. A double whammy of PR for the game in NZ - I know not all of the RU players would stay in NZ but if the new franchise just got one big signing it could draw a lot of interest for them.

Yeah no thanks.

If they want to go to the Titans, Warriors et al, then sure, let’s talk.

but when like this bloke, he only wants to go to roosters or storm, than he can either take a pay cut, or stick to union

It would be the worst thing we could do .. was beginning of the end for union in this country, once they started concentrating spending big bucks on league players for PR rather than developing players.
Just like the aleague after having some big (Oldies past prime) marque players to get publicity the code is dying as there is so many marques they can get and also only so long you can trade on gimmicks

I think having a blanket 50% dispensation on all Union players would be a bad idea, there'd be to many grey areas and ways to abuse that, but having more targeted dispensations could be a good idea under the right circumstances.

Let's say that hypothetically the NRL wants to grow their brand and the sport in South Africa, then having any South African professional RU players, and particularly Springboks, contracts be 50% or even 100% off the cap wouldn't be a bad idea at all.

I would rather get touch football players into the NRL than rugby players.

Touch footy players have the passing skills that the NRL needs.

If any team signs that muppet Savea they are nuts.
He’s another grub like josh McGuire. Plus with his eye disorder he’ll soon be blind in one eye as well

Show me any player outside of the All Blacks that would make it,
The Wallabies are crap, the Springboks are better off kept locked up and the pom are well nothing .

Leave RU where it is if they want to come let them take a pay cut

A salary cap concession for a bloke I have never heard of, and may not even be good enough for park footy?

Has Rugby League learned nothing from the Garrick Morgan experiment?

No. The game is rooted over here in Australia. And the AB's are f**ked as well because no money and with S Af gone to the north and super rugby dead they are pretty much stuffed financially as well.

So, let their guys go to Europe, they will and NZ Rugby is dead because the will refuse to release players like the do now with Samoa, Fiji etc..... Or let them play RL, merge the codes and have some chance of maintaining some power in the sport...

Sure 98 out of 100 are crap.

You would not want Aussies,.

Entice a saffa or a kiwi.

A couple maybe worth the effort, most will fail.
