News Coronavirus and NRL

Yeah, that's great, that's not what these NRL players signed up for. There is nothing in their contracts that say the code is allowed to quarantine from their family for any period of time, least of all a significant period.
You dont get to just take over their lives because you want to watch some footy. These guys have responsbilities outside of their job, and how selfish would have to be to think your right to watch a sport trumps those responsibilities

If i were a warriors player, id be heading home tonight to my family and NRL and club be damned. They'd have no grounds to sack you and if they tried it would be a PR DISASTER for them. If i was single with no kids, yeah i wouldnt give much of a shit... but if i had kids, no chance.

There is something in their contracts though that says the NRL and clubs can stop paying them if the season is shutdown due to some form of act of god.

will they still be so keen to flee home if the cheques stop flowing?

Is it fair?
Absolutely.

The warriors are as important to this competition as any of the other 15 clubs.

But 1 club is not as important as 15 other clubs, nor as important as 300+ players that will have their income affected, or a whole competition that will have its funding affected.

The NRL and local governments are still talking like it will blow over now a few token things have been done. It won't.

People here are still not convinced there is much of a threat and call some of the media "alarmist".

Things have already changed rapidly here in two days, so there is still hope they will further change, and we won't be like Italy (or Spain in a week).

The NRL season will be severely disrupted. If that is the biggest thing you have to worry about this year you are very lucky.

The season may run without crowds, even with NZ Warriors stuck here for a week or two, for a little while. I can imagine the NRL redoing the draw so that they get a bunch of away matches early, and they can go back home in a month or two when it "all blows over". But it won't blow over, any time soon.

South Korea and Japan, and even China do give us hope. We won't have months of peak Italy and Iran if we get social distancing right, very soon (like, this week, or as I predict, next week). But the hope they give us is not of a smooth experience where we can just go back to watching footy. We will be stuck inside for months. There will not be public things at all. You will be allowed to go to the shops and chemists, and that is about all.

Hopefully that is how we will live for the next few months. Because the alternative is the horror that is Italy (they too, were laughing at coronavirus and saying it was a hoax, and overblown, just 3 weeks ago. Two weeks ago they tried some soft social distancing measures. Last week, way too late, and you can only go out to get groceries or medicine). Then we will still have these awful lockdown conditions, but with the cold comfort of knowing the extra two weeks of freedom we bought ourselves came at the cost of thousands of people (and will extend the social distancing times at the end by more than this anyway).

This is another glimpse at the horror of Italy:

https://www.newsweek.com/young-unaf...d-you-now-stop-killing-people-opinion-1491797

But in the end, if we do stay isolated, South Korea has shown us that we will have a few months inside with our families, we'll be working from home, where possible, and after an unpleasant pandemic made about as bad as a nasty flu season thanks to social distancing, we should be out enjoying a pleasant spring (ready for another f***ing hot summer...).

Don't worry about footy, I say stock up on PS4/X Box games, and keep your Netflix going for autumn and winter. Maybe the NRL will be able to play a short season in spring.

The media is alarmist and so are you. Where is 6 months income going to come from? Some people might be able to do a month at most, many people cannot work from home. We're allowed to go to the shops? Where the f**k is the food going to come from to stock the shops? I live in a small town that's 65km away from the nearest supermarket, and I run a petrol station in said town. Am I allowed to stay open so people can get fuel to go to the shops? Or from the other angle, am I required to stay open so people can get fuel (an essential service) risking exposure to myself and myself exposing others to the virus?? It's not as simple as 'everyone just stay home all winter'.

South Korea did not impose a lockdown like Italy

China's lockdown was not as long as 6 f**king months and it was not the whole country.

It's a good and fair question. We're probably about to find out i reckon.
I certainly wont judge the players if collectively decide that they want the competition to keep going and are willing to do what it takes to make that happen and keep those cheques coming... nor will i judge them if they say keep your money, im not abandoning my family for who knows how long just to keep playing some sport

fair enough.

im also not going to judge the NRL or the other 15 clubs if they tell the warriors that if they choose to go home they’ll just be forfeiting their matches so the rest of the comp can keep on going

Exactly. It would be unfortunate for the Warriors but you can't just tell 15 other clubs to stop playing and stop getting paid because of one club.

My problem with that is, to what end?
The NRL is a patient zero away from having to shut it all down regardless of the Warriors involvement, and as far as i can see, there is no reason to beleive the NRL wont eventually get that patient zero... so what are you ultimately achieving?

You look across the sporting landscape, the NBA,, NCAA, EPL, Champions League... these are BILLION dollar industries. If they can make the tough decision, then surely we can. RL is not THAT important.

I think it would be prudent to put the competition on hold for 4 weeks, send everyone home and reassess in a month. We can play this season into November or Decmeber or shorten the season by a few games and play into late October/Early November.. what would be a fiasco is to go ahead with the competition, without the warriors, provide a competitive inbalance for teams who play the warriors twice vs once, deal with all that fall out, only to end up having to put the compeition on hold in 3 weeks time when the first patient zero arrives and then the whole thing grinds to a halt anyways

It seems like people believe if the Warriors issue is sorted, than the game will go on with no other issues.

It's literally a matter of time before a player contracts it.

Quite frankly the Aus Govt should bring in the same ruling for returning overseas visitors immediately also.

What exactly do you think is going to change in 4 weeks?

If they suspend the season, the season is as good as cancelled. If today’s risk levels are decided to be too high, well we aren’t going to below these levels for a solid 2-3 months.

as for those other comps, the fact they are billion dollar organisations is why they can afford to cancel seasons. No NBA player is going to lose their home when they don’t get paid this season. There would be dozens if not hundreds of NRL players in that boat though

There most definitely would be NBA players that would suffer financial hardship if they were not paid.

I'm also confused by your comment that nothing will change in 4 weeks. Things are changing daily at the moment.

Nothing will change for the better. It is an absolutely certainty that Australia will have exponentially more cases 4 weeks from now than they do today.

If they halt the season now, 2020 is done

If there's one sport that can play through this it's us. We were one of the only comps to continue through the World Wars.

I think we're getting a little ahead of ourselves, as we've had only a few days of spread (spreading a lot slower than other affected countries, like Italy for example) and still only 3 deaths (youngest being 78).

I think the preventative measures taken might curb it quite a bit. I see no reason to think we'll all be indoors all winter with a post-apocalyptic landscape outside.

Quite frankly the Aus Govt should bring in the same ruling for returning overseas visitors immediately also.

They should have done that a long time ago. Looking through confirmed cases it seems at least 3/4 were from people who had recently travelled.

Yes. It's a lot more selfish to tell everyone else they can't get paid for months because you don't want to do what's necessary to play on. It's completely understandable if the Warriors don't want to stay in Australia, I wouldn't want to if I was in their shoes, but you can't just tell 300+ players they can't do their jobs because you aren't.

Ummm, as soon as one player tests positive, nobody will do their jobs.
