Hick gets the flick.

All I can say is thank f**k COVID19 didn't come in the middle of the cricket season, the game is f**king broke.

https://www.news.com.au/sport/crick...k/news-story/34a81e6e1b2ebdbc6c7388cd13298e21

Cricket Australia has cut Australian batting coach Graeme Hick as part of its $40 million budget wipe out confirmed on Wednesday.

Hick is one of 40 employees to lose his job in the mass cull designed to slash $40 million off the governing body’s annual balance sheet.

Cricket Australia confirmed on Wednesday that it intends to tighten its belt by cutting 40 positions, all financial bonuses for senior management and temporarily stopping future Australia A tours.

The Australian reported on Wednesday Hick, Langer’s top batting adviser, is the highest profile employee to be cut from the national side.

Hick has been involved with the Aussie team for more than seven years.

Last year his position was reportedly tweaked to allow him to focus on more red ball cricket with Aussie legend Ricky Ponting called in to Langer’s coaching squad to focus on Australia’s limited-overs batting.

According to the report assistant coach Andrew McDonald will now have to perform Hick’s coaching responsibilities as well as his regular duties.

The Australian team’s physiotherapist Kevin Sims has also reportedly lost his job.

Their departures came just 24 hours after former CEO Kevin Roberts was forced out and replaced by Nick Hockley as interim chief executive.

Hockley briefly addressed all CA staff on Wednesday, who were told their fate by department managers earlier on Wednesday, before fronting a press conference.

Some 200 workers were stood down by Roberts in April, when he cited fears the organisation would run out of money by August.

Redundancies have long been considered inevitable, but questions remained over how many jobs would go as the organisation braced for its revenue to take a hit because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

CA said in a statement that the “positive impact of the JobKeeper program and an increasingly improved outlook for the season ahead have been recent factors considered in arriving at this final number (40)”.

The organisation has vowed to reduce budgets in “administration, travel, marketing and advertising”, cut bonuses for senior management and implement ongoing executive pay reductions.

Domestic cricket has been left untouched, with CA shelving plans to trim the length of the Sheffield Shield and women’s Big Bash League.

But all Australia A tours and Cricket Australia XI fixtures have been paused. The national second XI competition is also on ice, as are programs for under-15 (male and female) and under-17 (male) representative teams.

“We recognise that this is a difficult time for Cricket Australia employees, particularly for those staff members affected by these redundancies and their families,” CA chairman Earl Eddings said in a statement.

“However, our responsibility is clear.

“To navigate a path for cricket through this period of uncertainty and disruption to ensure we come out the other side sustainable in the short term and prosperous in the long term.” Hockley described Wednesday as a “a difficult day for cricket”. “But by pulling together and with more positive signs for the upcoming summer, the Australian cricket family can emerge from this pandemic stronger,” he said.

I remember when Bob Simpson was our coach and he was responsible for everything and he really did make a difference to our performances, now we have all these hangers on batting bowling and fielding coaches which really have done nothing to improve our performance on the world stage.

We just dont need them.

That’s just not true. To have a side performing at the elite level today you need a team of coaches. All of the best teams have a squad of coaches.

The days of Bobby Simpson and drinking 60 schooners on QF1 are well and truly over.

It’s like saying the West Indies will come good again one day when they get another group of naturally talented cricketers.

Seven and Foxtel won't pay full rights fee to Cricket Australia as broadcast dispute escalates

Channel Seven and Foxtel will not pay their full broadcast rights instalment of A$55 million to Cricket Australia for September, with the free-to-air network going as far as to suggest its partial payment of the A$25 million it owed would be its one and only fee handed over for the entire summer.

In an incendiary move at the end of a winter in which the networks have consistently harried CA for a rights discount in the time of coronavirus - without necessarily having a clear contractual basis on which to do so - Seven and Foxtel have effectively challenged the governing body to pursue legal options to recoup its agreed fees, or come to the negotiating table.

CA, which has been awaiting the networks' choice of action on the due date for its next rights instalment, has stood by the soundness of its legal position. This is based on the contention that there is no discount required besides those increments already inked into the A$1.18 billion rights deals settled with Seven and Foxtel in 2018 in the event of any reduction in content.

Those clauses have already applied to Fox Sports, given the postponement of scheduled white-ball matches against New Zealand, Zimbabwe and the West Indies this year, while the domestic limited-overs tournament and the annual Prime Minister's XI game are all more or less guaranteed to be missing from the fixture this season.

However, Seven's deal to cover Test matches and the majority of the BBL and WBBL have yet to be cut back, meaning the failure to pay the full instalment on Tuesday may be interpreted as a contractual breach. The network's outspoken chief executive, James Warburton, delivered a statement on Tuesday claiming that this was not the case, due to Seven's notice last week that it sought to enter into a dispute resolution process with CA over an independent assessment of the rights value.

"Putting aside the questions of breach, in accordance with the contract Seven has invoked the right to appoint an independent expert to determine the fair value of the media rights against the expected schedule for the season compared to the originally published schedule," Warburton said. "Seven has paid the first instalment reflecting our fair value."

CA has been contacted for comment.

I don’t really understand how Seven and Fox can make this argument if CA provides them with the majority of the content they were scheduled to this summer?

The only stuff that’s been canned are a few T20Is against Zimbabwe and the Windies that we’re meant to be part of the prep for the T20WC. And the rights for the T20WC aren’t held by CA, they’re held by the ICC so it’s cancellation wouldn’t really influence it.

The broadcasters are clearly trying to force CA to capitulate. I think it is a bit contrived when the broadcasters pay an amount that they say represents ‘fair value’ in circumstances where the Schedule is not yet released.

How do you know what the value is until the Schedule is released?

I think from a legal point of view the broadcasters are not in a strong position. However, they are in a strong position from a negotiation point of view.

Nothing to do with the content

Due to covid, Businesses have either folded or are very cautious with their marketing/advertising campaigns in this climate of uncertainty

The dollars that commercials and sponsors generate wouldnt be available now, or not as near as much pre covid. Therefore less coin would coming in for Fox, and in particular ch7 in revenue streams - at least fox has paid subscriptions which ch7 doesn't

Its why ch9 wanted the NRL to boycott the season, The season went ahead and ch9 will be at a loss of I think around 200 million

CA for not even considering coming to the table to talk to their partners going forward has shown how clueless they really are. The AFL and NRL both took a haircut on their TV deals what made CA think they were immune l???

CA at this stage is expecting to deliver pretty much a full season across mens and womens cricket, including an expanded BBL and a four test India series?

Seven are the clowns in this scenario. They paid for games, not squad make-up

Too many grade cricketers were playing in the BBL last season. The broadcasters need to suck it up.

Their response was over the top but for CA not even offer to come to the table to negotiate going forward was just silly. Clowns on both sides IMO.

CA should only negotiate if the likely schedule changes.

Why should they be bullied by the broadcaster when the final schedule hasn't even been locked in yet? That's just weak and puts Seven in the power pose straight away.

The schedule very likely changes. At this stage WA would be long shots to host games. That takes away prime time viewing in the East Coast.

BBL will also have less access to International players given quantine issues
