I always remember the news on the BBC in 1981 of a French Rugby League match going mental and players doing Karate kicks as such and France does have it's own version of Kickboxing and its older then any form of team sports called Savate or Le Boxe Francais.

That was the French Championship Final of 1981 between XIII Catalan and Villeneuve. The referee walked off and no champion was declared for the season. The Cup Final which was to be played a week or two later was also cancelled. The League president resigned.

Not sure, they were the two big rivals of the time. I would suggest there may have been incidents when the clubs met during the season. Looking at the video, it looks as though Villeneuve captain Joel Roosebrouck was king hit (he was a red head as was their hooker). He was the French captain and a very inspirational player, like the French Ray Price of the time.

On a side note the Villeneuve hooker from this match, Christian Maccali, who was a very good player. His daughter, Camille, is now a presenter for L'Equipe TV in France and has presented Catalan games this season.
