I reckon they would wrestle even more, if everyone was rooted. The point of wrestling is to give the other defenders more time to get back onside.

Well this is how scores blow out. A team gets so gassed they either get carved up with quick play-the-balls or they get penalised out of the game. There's no right decision, but if you don't slow the ruck you'll get carved up for sure. If you wrestle (hold down) just a teensy bit longer there's a chance the ref won't pick it up and maybe your defence will get back in time for the next run.
