Edwards must be playing the Tuafua role of being basically an extra prop defending in the middle.
His mobility and workrate adds a lot to any defence.
Don't see him adding anything in attack.

Jarrod in 7 and Kurt in 6 seems right given Jarrod's newfound form as a 7.

Paterson into the second row, Houston drops back to lock and Edwards drops back to the bench. Anyone else think that could be a chance when the team runs out on Sunday?

They are obviously trying to make Paterson an impact player off the bench - but guys keep droping out and he has to start every week.

I like the idea of Edwards at lock. He will certainly tighten up our D in the middle and the two starting backrowers (Houston and Taia) are very good defenders also.

Stone must want us to start off strong defensively against the Dragons. He might not of started Paterson because his defense can be a bit erratic. In saying that, I would like to see him make his way into the starting side soon because he's so damaging at his best.

I think with all that heat in the first few rounds and the the brutality shown from Manly on Sunday, it's a good option to bring in someone fresh like Eddy, into the starting side.

interesting team. the 1 -> 7 is spot on. it will be very interesting to see what that pack can do. understandable that Pato has been dropped back to the bench, he was soft and went missing against Manly big time, and he was one of the only uninjured troops by the end.

I know he'd have had to pass the COGsport test to be named (at least I assume?), but geez I'm surprised to see Faas there. By the end of last week's game you could have told him he was Santa Claus and he'd have believed it.

NEWCASTLE back-rower Richie Fa'aoso will have a precautionary brain scan and be put through a cognitive test before he can play against St George Illawarra on Sunday. Fa'aoso was knocked senseless against Manly last weekend with his concussion a hot topic in league circles over the past few days.
But it hasn't stopped Knights coach Rick Stone naming him on the bench for the clash with the Dragons at Ausgrid Stadium in Newcastle.
Whether he takes his place in the 17, however, will hinge on his test results over the next couple of days.
Stone said the club would stand Fa'aoso down if he was not completely cleared by the test results.
"We'll obviously be taking every precaution we can before Richie is cleared to take the field, that's for sure," Stone said. "He says he feels fine but he'll be having an MRI and have to go through the usual cog tests that all players who are concussed go through to make sure everything is okay.
"We have named him but if there is any problem there, he obviously won't play."

Depth in squad allows Knights to name strong side for Dragons duel
BY BRETT KEEBLE
30 Mar, 2011 04:00 AM

KNIGHTS coach Rick Stone said the club’s deep talent pool meant he was still able to name a strong squad to tackle reigning NRL and world club champions St George Illawarra at Ausgrid Stadium on Sunday, despite having seven senior players on the sidelines nursing injuries.
Stone will welcome back captain Kurt Gidley at five-eighth to partner in-form halfback Jarrod Mullen for Newcastle’s home opener, and evergreen centre Adam MacDougall will make his first appearance this season after sitting out the first three games on compassionate grounds.
Gidley tore a disc in his lower back in Newcastle’s comprehensive 42-8 victory over Penrith on March 13 and MacDougall has had time off to mourn the death last month of his father, Gil.
Their return will help offset the unavailability of playmakers Beau Henry (ankle) and Ben Rogers (shoulder), dummy half Isaac De Gois (thumb), premiership-winning former Dragons enforcer Neville Costigan (arm), fullback Shannon McDonnell (concussion) and forwards Mark Taufua (finger) and Cameron Ciraldo (chest).
Prop Richie Fa’aoso, who was knocked out in Newcastle’s 26-12 loss to Manly at Brookvale Oval last Sunday, was named on the bench but must pass a CogSport test tomorrow.
Kiwi Test centre Junior Sa’u is under a cloud after aggravating a groin strain against the Sea Eagles and he will be subject to a fitness test on Friday.
‘‘I’m confident that we have named a really competitive team that is well balanced and has some strength in it, and some strike,’’ Stone said.
‘‘We’ve been put under pressure a little bit with injuries to some key positions, but the depth and the flexibility of our squad is a bonus at the moment, and it’s really helping us to still be able to name a strong side for this Sunday.
‘‘I’m excited to see Mullo and Kurt back in the halves together because I think it will give us a great threat through the middle.’’
Former Dragons utility back Wes Naiqama was switched from centre to fullback to replace McDonnell, allowing MacDougall to start in the centres and Gidley in the halves.
McDonnell was not named after being knocked out in a Glenn Stewart tackle on Sunday but said yesterday that he was feeling no ill effects and was confident of passing his CogSport test tomorrow and being cleared to play, if required.
Joel Edwards was named at lock for his first NRL match this season. Marvin Karawana will fill the utility role on the bench in his first NRL appearance since the 2009 finals.
Stone said Gidley’s presence ensured there was a positive vibe at training yesterday.
‘‘Kurt was running around barking a bit at training, and you can see the extra zip he gets out of the boys,’’ Stone said.
‘‘The response he gets from the boys is a big thing that Kurt can get and no-one else can get, so we’re really happy to have him back.
‘‘He’s in a confident frame of mind, he did some kicking and some running around today, and his back has pulled up really well, so in hindsight, what we did with him last week as far as giving him a rest was the right choice.’’
Stone said MacDougall, who resumed team training last week, was ready to play.
Ciraldo will consult with specialist Des Bokor in Sydney today to determine whether he needs surgery to repair the partially torn pectoral muscle he sustained against Manly.
If he has an operation, he could be sidelined for up to 12 weeks. The other option is rest and rehabilitation for six weeks to see if the muscle heals sufficiently without surgery.
Stone hoped De Gois and Taufua would be available to play against the Broncos in Brisbane on April 11.
