Rugby Australia to target top NRL talent

Many NRL journos and fans also appear to believe Union deserves sole ownership of the word "Rugby". The language used would lead an impartial observer to think NRL is a Union comp and another, lesser comp exists called the NLL. The Kiwis on here who say "Union and League" are clearly Union fans...

Rugby Australia to target top NRL talent

Your initial point was about crowds in certain parts of England. Sydney is supposedly the centre of the RL universe. If your fumbling compatriots had an end-of-season international calendar, inconceivable they wouldn't be playing any games in Melbourne. England Community Lions women played...

Rugby Australia to target top NRL talent

Far cry from the multitudes flocking to games in Canberra and Townsville in 2017. Hang on though. Final in 2017 got 40k with home team involvement. Final in 2022 got 68k without home team involvement. Now I'm confused. Are you confused too, mate?

    Super League 2023 discussion

The "York women's programme" initially took the form of snatching almost the entire Castleford squad along with the coaching staff.

New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

Leave out the RL and that was called the Norman Conquest.

New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

One game at Addington Show grounds I remember watching was the 1988 GB World Cup test against the Kiwis. Part of the Lions tour. Coverage wasn't in the BBC TV listings. But tuned in, just on the off chance, in the early hours of a Sunday morning and there it was - live from Christchurch, NZ. We...

New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

Just finished - Wigan 42 HKR 12. Pies pretty comfortable in the end. Probably start favourites next week. Got to hand it to Rovers fans. Big turnout for an early kick-off. And stuck around as the points piled up. Boot on the other foot would have triggered the Wigan Walk.

    2023 TV/Fox/Streaming Ratings

I remember looking at the first Auckland Warriors jersey in 95 and thinking the Australian RL badge jarred a bit. NRL has been a highly successful branding exercise for the comp and the game. I wouldn't change the name. The word "national" is usefully generic. Can be interpreted as "elite".

New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

Used to be smaller when it was Addington Showgrounds. Bit of terracing behind one goal and the stand opposite the main was much narrower. Found an article covering the last GF to be played there in 2018. Contains these passages - "The Canterbury Rugby League leased the Showgrounds from 1951...

New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

No idea on the second question. My point was that CRL don't own RL Park. I think the stadium where Crusaders played was irreparably damaged in the earthquake. A deal was done for them to play at a patched-up RL Park. And they were given priority because Union is the bigger code. Which...

New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

Pretty sure they don't currently own it. Bit hazy on the details, but can remember an interview with Frank Endacott which included the line, "And we never got it back". This was a reference to deals and arrangements made after the earthquake. Nga Puna Wai is now the base for Canterbury RL. They...

Rugby Australia to target top NRL talent

There's no accounting for taste in both hemispheres. Takes all sorts to make a world. SH eccentrics get very excited over interminable fumbling.

Rugby Australia to target top NRL talent

In Oz, you possibly don't grasp the extent of English RU ignorance as regards RL on the field. The bulk of Rugger fans here are absolutely convinced that the ball is in play longer in Union. It's because they think the game stops after every tackle in League. In their mind, the PTB is a form of...

    2023 TV/Fox/Streaming Ratings

Couple of years ago on another forum, I put forward the hypothesis that RU fans with a Fox subscription were more likely to watch AFL over NRL when faced with a straight choice. This was partly based on disproportionate falls in AFL ratings the season after Fox declined to renew the rights for...

    2023 TV/Fox/Streaming Ratings

Considerable variations in the BVOD/STB ratio from the standard figures used earlier in the season. It appears the migration to streaming has been much greater among AFL fans than NRL fans. Any theories as to why?

    The Game 2023 Crowd Watch

Would be better to challenge narrow club tribalism rather than celebrate it. Unless you prefer lower crowds at finals in big neutral stadia. If only diehards attend games, where will the extra fans come from?

New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

I don't know if terminology in NRL marketing has been covered on threads about the Las Vegas excursion. Americans will, not unreasonably, see the game played by National Rugby League teams as "Rugby". Language like "Rugby and League" will come across as utter gibberish.

New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

I wish Aussies and Kiwis would stop calling RU "Rugby" or referring to "Rugby and League". It's offensive to the memory of all the players who were banned and discriminated against by RU authorities. RU regarded RL as a form of Rugby Football when it suited them. That's how they justified...
