The boom in women's Rugby League and the Union 7s overlap

At present and for the foreseeable future I actually see both as largely complimentary of one another in most nations. Take Australia for example. There is already a degree of crossover between both the Super W and NRLW competitions with player participating in both. In fact, I cannot think of...

The 2019 USARL Season has Kicked Off (Believe it or Not)

Rugby in the US does have a number of very wealthy and connected alumni. No disputing this. But none of the growth of the game beyond MLR has come from a single cent of these guys collective fortunes or lists of contacts. It has come like in many other nations through hard graft and investment...

The 2019 USARL Season has Kicked Off (Believe it or Not)

AF is a big roadblock. I know of guys willing to effectively fund entire Rugby programs at schools only to have them blocked by Football coaches. Or when programs are set up Football coaches forbidding their players from playing instead preferring them to run track or do nothing at all during...

The 2019 USARL Season has Kicked Off (Believe it or Not)

There's apparently 200k players in the States. But it's still a very long way from being mainstream and likely never really will. Which is somewhat odd. Americans tend to love very stats heavy sports. The NFL is a case in point. A very numbers based game. Much like Baseball. Same as Cricket.

The 2019 USARL Season has Kicked Off (Believe it or Not)

You comments display a complete lack of understanding of how Rugby has established itself in the States while League struggles to move beyond a dozen or so active 'clubs' at any one time. And that's more than 30 years of hard graft from those within the Rugby community in establishing clubs...

The 2019 USARL Season has Kicked Off (Believe it or Not)

Actually Cricket has reasonable numbers playing the game in the States. Thanks largely to the growing Sub-Continental communities in the States. They even have intercollegiate competitions these days. A number of Cricket specific facilities etc. But it's still a long, long way from being mainstream.

The 2019 USARL Season has Kicked Off (Believe it or Not)

I'm dubious of the likely sustainability of the Super 7s concept though applaud them for looking to launch with both men's and women's teams. But from what I know about MLR and the sports management experience of the guys actually running the league I think it will stick around long term. A...

The 2019 USARL Season has Kicked Off (Believe it or Not)

That's kind of what I was implying. I tend to view the Wolfpack as more of a wealthy businessman's play thing rather than a legitimate attempt to build anything meaningful beyond maybe his own wealth further. And frankly, I'll look upon both Ottawa and New York much the same unless they actually...

The 2019 USARL Season has Kicked Off (Believe it or Not)

It also highlights the apparent lack of development behind League in NA. Placing a team in a location regardless of how well marketed will always struggle to bed in locally when an alternative based around a far more established sport gets set up. The Arrows have established themselves as the...

The 2019 USARL Season has Kicked Off (Believe it or Not)

It's only going to get worse. There were 9 teams in MLR this season. There will be another 3 coming online next season. At least two more in 2021 and a total of 16 by 2023. Then there's Super 7s which is a expanded 7s format in the works that will launch with 6-8 cities on board to be played in...

    South Africa

Yeah. I call bullshit. You claim you were offered rhe Canadian RU captaincy after 6 months in the country when Reg.8 of the World Rugby laws introduced on 2000 mandated that a player has to have lived in the country in question for no less than 3 consecutive years. Which means you would have had...

The average salary spend in the ProD2 last season was 5.7m Euros. With the lowest being a little over 2.5m Euro and the highest over 10m. The lowest spend was still more than the cap in the Super League. It's a little different in the Championship in England. With teams spending between...

If he really has played at that level in France he'd have no issue with telling me what club he played for. Otherwise, he's talking shit.

Still waiting on the name of the club you supposedly played for.

There's more money and opportunity in Europe for the younger guys. I'm not saying it's impossible but you can make the kind of money I mentioned above playing ProD2 in France (2nd division) and there's even good money to be made in Federale 1 (3rd division). Same could be said of Japan which...

    South Africa

They are still a top 5 side which is were they've always been. And they are suffering provincially not from selection or popularity issues but from player drain. A weak Rand means Sth African players are popular options for the big Euro leagues and Japanese clubs. Players are faced with the...

    South Africa

They've recently done away with them because as it turns out most of the guys being selected on the teams who would have been mandated to be selected due to race are actually being selected because they are the best player in that position available. Most of the SR squads are 40% African and...

    Fiji

Absolutely. People on forums tend to get too invested in code wars while overlooking the realities of such movements to those in places like the Islands. The presence of opportunity. Players don't care too much which one it is as long as there's the opportunity to earn a living especially now if...

There's also the Fiji Lautai who will be playing in the first full season of GRR next year alongside Kafiga Samoa and evidently a Hawai'i based team which from reports will also draw heavily from the Islands.
