Great match this will be. Sharks with no Gallen or Bird, Raiders at home and actually winning for once.

Carney foot injury not as bad as first feared

BY DANIEL MACDONALD

23/06/2008 12:00:00 AM
Canberra playmaker Todd Carney is hopeful his injured foot won't rule him out of a possible third consecutive NRL win when the Raiders face the Cronulla Sharks next Monday.
Carney hobbled from the field with 10 minutes remaining in Saturday night's 58-18 thrashing over the Bulldogs but yesterday, back in Canberra, said his foot wasn't as bad as he first feared.
Scans today will reveal the extent of his injury and the halfback will have a week to prove he has recovered.
Carney admitted that when he signalled to the sideline for medical help he was in pain. After the match medical staff rated him a 60-40 chance of playing against the Sharks.
''I haven't had any sharp pains this morning so it feels pretty good,'' Carney, who was able to walk on his injured right foot yesterday, said.
With a home advantage, the Raiders will take extra confidence into the next round with the Sharks likely to be missing stars Paul Gallen (NSW Origin duty) and Greg Bird (injury).
But Canberra may be without centre Joel Monaghan, who could also field a call-up into the Blues' squad for injured St George Illawarra Dragons skipper Mark Gasnier (back).
Carney said the Raiders would be confident after back-to-back wins.
''The sides that we've played have had some players out but saying that, we have been playing some good football and for us to get three in a row would be great,'' Carney said.
''It's looking a bit far, but playing Melbourne [in two weeks' time] after an Origin game with probably 10 players [backing up], it could be three but hopefully four and that would take us right into the eight.
''It's all starting to get into the do-or-die of the season and to get three would be a real buzz for us. A couple of weeks ago people were starting to write us off.''
Canberra centre Colin Best's four-try haul was rated by Carney as ''awesome'' and Raiders coach Neil Henry was just as complimentary.
''Colin Best was exceptional,'' Henry said yesterday. ''But one of our real strengths was our forwards.
''It helps that we started our sets really well. Bronx Goodwin was better in his carries and our wingers were getting the ball back and getting good metres on kick returns which starts us off really well in our sets.''

After the Sharks game, the Raiders travel to Melbourne to take on last year's premiers on the Storm's home turf at Olympic Park, before taking on the high-flying Dragons in Wollongong.
Saturday's win at ANZ Stadium was the Raiders' second away win of the season, but Henry denied the hoodoo had been broken.
''I wouldn't say that,'' he said. ''We've got another four or five games away from home and realistically we need to win a couple of those to be a chance in the eight.
''[It was] valuable for confidence and momentum and that leads into a home game where it could possibly get [to] three [wins] in a row and once sides start to string wins together momentum builds.''
The Raiders are also hopeful utility player Marshall Chalk (thumb) and forward Nigel Plum (shoulder) are cleared by medical staff to make their return next round.
Meanwhile, the Raiders look set to miss out on the signature of young Brisbane Broncos back Joel Moon. The 20-year-old, who met with Raiders management last week, is poised to sign a three-year deal with the New Zealand Warriors.

Head to Canberra for a red nose world record...

CANBERRA Stadium will become a sea of red next Monday night, with the Raiders and SIDS and Kids ACT today announcing that a world record attempt for "the most people wearing red noses" will be held at their next home game against Cronulla.
Chief executive of SIDS and Kids ACT Karen Faichney said that this initiative would help celebrate Red Nose Day's anniversary.
"We’re aiming to make our 21st red nose day something to never be forgotten and a Guinness World Record would be a perfect present," Ms Faichney said.
"Hopefully the people of Canberra get right behind this and help make it happen.
"So far we’ve had great support from the Raiders, Canberra Stadium and Ocean & Earth, and we’re really looking forward to a big crowd on Monday night."
Canberra skipper Alan Tongue is looking forward to the event, and encouraged all fans that will attend the Rd 16 clash to get behind it.
"After a couple of big wins we’re hoping to run out in front of a big crowd at Canberra Stadium against the Sharks on Monday," Tongue said.
"Being a red head it will be great to see a sea of red noses when we run out, and at the same time everyone will be helping a fantastic cause."
The record will be determined at half time of the NRL game, where everyone who purchased a red nose will be asked to wear it for around five minutes during the break.
The Raiders have also redesigned their website in preparation for the special event.
