NEW Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan is moving fast to avoid a repeat of last year's recruitment woes, tabling a new contract to veteran winger Luke Covell and putting out the feelers to English Test half Sam Tomkins.
Sports Confidential can reveal that Covell's decision to gamble on radical knee surgery has paid dividends in a further one-year offer, which he's now considering.
The goalkicker's career looked to be finished when he suffered an anterior cruciate tear in April.
Desperate to prove his wares before the end of 2010, Covell underwent LARS surgery and made a successful return two weeks ago against Newcastle.
With fellow winger Blake Ferguson preparing to join the Roosters, Cronulla are suddenly short on depth out wide and want Covell on deck next year.
But a source close to the club said the 28-year-old remains uncertain over whether to continue, given the fact he's still feeling his way after the operation.
Flanagan, meanwhile, has been privately talking to club insiders about a possible approach to Tomkins the 21-year-old Wigan prodigy who made his Test debut against France last month.
The Sharks privately concede their current halves haven't passed muster this season, and with Trent Barrett tipped to join Parramatta should he not retire, the playmaking cupboard is looking bare.
