Obviously I don’t want to jump the gun in regards to Matthew Head. He have seen our man Ronald jump the gun previously. Starting to blabber about a certain player and what he could bring to the side before he realises rent money alone won’t always get the ink on the deal.
Looking at the potential back line next reason, it raises a few eye brows. If we sign Head, on paper alone, things may not be as dark as predicted, in fatc things look pretty damn rosy. 1 to 7 would be choc full of attacking thrust. Getting rid of unthreatening and generally dire players in Morris and Fitzhenry. As well as relegating rubbish like Mcdonnell and Ryan to the reserves.
Looking on the positive side. We would have
· One of the smartest and safest fullbacks in the game. Ability to position himself, chime in at second receiver and kick goals as well as lead from the front with his courage
· Two contrasting Wingers with genuine wingers attributes. Tuiaki with his raw power and ability to act as a man who can get us out of our own 20 early in sets. Youngquest with his sizzling pace and ability to bring down high balls.
· Two of the most exciting young players in the games in the centres. Collis and his ability to put his winger away as well as beat his man. Lawrence and his dynamic speed, hole running and brilliant finishing ability
· Marshall, a man who won us a premiership with freakish long range plays. Head an organising halfback who has a strong left foot kicking game. Allowing Marshall to forget about organising the forwards and steering the side, and get wider and in more open space.
Looking on the negative side of things
· Brett Hodgson for one I have huge question marks over his knees. I love Hodgo, but for all his heart and guts he was awful at times last season. He continued to be safe and smart however the spark was well and truly gone and I fear things are taking their toll
· Tuiaki may be shifted to the forwards. Could be a man easy to turn around with long kicks and target with high balls. Youngquest has seemingly gone mising at a few clubs. Witha 1 year deal he will be feeling the pressure to perform immediately.
· Chris Lawrence is an attacking weapon. However massive question makrs over his ability to defend at centre. The likes of Puletua and Menzies made him look absolutely foolish on occasions last season. I Don't blame him i blame the coaching staff for exposing him like that.
· Benji Marshall probably has even more question marks then these two combined. Has barely fired a shot since 2005, except to go down with 3 more shoulder injuries. Looked completely gun shy defensively and was carrying the body language of a deflated and beaten player in the last 8 games of 2007. His eorror rate in attack and dfense was embarrassing and the Tigers were a worse side with him in there in 07
· Matthew head has worse knee problems then Brett Hodgson. He was off the pace in 2007, unwilling to take the line on, poor in defence and looked slow and tired. Younger Saints players also complained about his poor attitude he bought to reserve grade games when dropped. Essentially saying he was a big head
So Which one is it? Do we have a gun attacking back line with all the strike and guile in the world? Or will be have a beat up back line incapable of dealing with stronger and bigger sides and more fragile then a Royce Simmons witches hat?
