Pretty sad really mate.

Being from the Hunter, I know how much the Knights mean to the area but things are looking very bad.

It's not good for rugby league at all!

It's what's to be expected unfortunatly. Bennett and co f**ked our club beyond belief and it'll take a few years to fully recover from it. I just hope we stick with Brown throughout because he deserves the chance to field his own team.

What is it with Raiders fans and their strange obsession with the Knights? Is it because Canberra is like a much, much shitter version of Newcastle and it's out of jealousy? Or is there more to it?

Are Knights fans seriously pinning their current predicament on Bennett?

Wayne made some mistakes down there, but it wasn't like the Knights were on a path to a dynasty and then he arrived and screwed it all up. The Knights were a mediocre side who's biggest goal was to just make the finals.

That suggests the issues run much deeper and while Wayne wasn't good enough to fix things, I don't think any coach could have in that environment.

Bennett built our club up with old players on their last legs with the chance of short term success, it didnt come. Once he realised there was no chance of success he left the club and took parting shots at the club on the way out. We were average before he came but he left us in a worse state than when he arrived.

I know it may seem crazy to Brisbane fans but without a favourable draw and an almost unlimited salary cap Bennett is an extremely limited coach.

Bennett bit off more than he could chew with your club. Completely overhauling the junior system while trying to build three strong teams so the Knights could sustain themselves for years to come.

It didn't all go to plan, but let's not pretend as if the Knights weren't in a giant hole before he got there and were stuck in a rut where 7th was the pinnacle for the team.

Anthony Don has to be the streakiest player in the NRL today. Not a bad player, but generally looks ordinary but frequently pulls of ridiculous crap. He's a little bit like Beau Ryan that way.

The Knights were hardly in a hole before Bennett took over. Sure they weren't overly successful and the club might not have had the financials or TPA money to bring stars to the club but until 2012 we had a team that consistently punched well above its weight...hell I'd kill for that and our 7th place finishes again right about now as the majority of Knights fans would.

I feel terribly sorry for Brown with what he has been left with and I hope the NRL give him a chance to try and repair it. If we have to have a severely young and inexperienced squad then from what I've heard he's a pretty good coach for younger players' development.

I'm not holding my breath though for improvement - I fear the club has been f**ked beyond repair in the past 4 years and as a fan it's difficult imagining the side ever getting out of the current state. The NRL won't let the club fold either so the fans will never really be put out of our pain.

I understand where you're coming from, but finishing 7th is nothing in this competition. It doesn't attract players to the club, nor sponsors and typically you're closer to winning a wooden spoon than an actual NRL premiership.

It was a hole and it needed to be fixed, but how can you fix something when you can't even count on the boss to pay your players?

The juniors certainly improved from Smith's reign to Bennett's - however I'm unsure how much of a role Bennett actually played in that - I think the money Tinker put into the club in terms of the high performance unit for the juniors and money spent on coaching for them had the much bigger impact.

Money doesn't solve everything - see the Centre of Excellence. Bennett had a big hand in re-shaping the programs and devising a system that would help improve Newcastle Rugby League.

Just as he did up here in Queensland - who do you think came up with all those Emerging Squads in 2001? Choppy?

In fact, I believe he's doing the same in England as well - trying to get them to buy into grass-roots development and giving the teenage kids the polish they need to compete on the world stage.

Don't get me wrong, Bennett's time at the Knights wasn't perfect and yes he's contributed to the mess...but it wasn't his mess. Truth be told, the Knights have been a shambles since 2003, it just took Joey's retirement to expose how deep the rot had set in.

And I'm not saying that to insult you or your club. While I wasn't a fan at the time, I really enjoyed the brand of football Newcastle played from 95-03 and think the game is poorer without it. However, it's going to take a few years to even this out and a coach that's passionate about the game in Newcastle. Hopefully Brown can help ease the Knights into that transition, but I get the feeling it's going to take someone else to really get them over the line.

Mate I'm not knocking what he's offered Qld, England, the Broncos, whoever, or the game in general - but naturally my main concern is Newcastle and Bennett himself would probably be the first one to tell you that he did much more to hurt than help them. No you're right finishing 7th or generally being mid table specialists isn't a great achievement in this competition - but we'd absolutely take that over what's happened in the last few seasons.

You say that Newcastle were in such shambles and that no other coach could fix the club anyway - but Brian Smith (with only a tiny fraction of the resources and roster that Bennett was allowed) proved that wasn't the case at all. He had a completely no name roster playing the most attractive and committed football that the club had since the 95-03 period you speak of. They competed in every single game even if they were eventually outclassed - and the stark contrast between them and the roster and general shit attitude they were replaced by in 2012 when Bennett came on board is downright depressing.

Canberra and Newcastle are not really similar at all. Newcastle is a much older town built off the back of the steel and mining industry. Canberra is a very young city designed for public servants with a more transient population.

Smith was like the MacGyver of Rugby League - he could make a team out of rubber bands and utensils but that team was never going to be good enough to win a premiership. He was apart of the problem more than anything else.

Newcastle is an awesome place. Objectively, Canberra is a dreary shithole but it has it's own unique charms.
