18th club, whose next?

They do cause it's ratings. Unless a new club pushes more subscribers or viewers it's not worth having from their perspective. It's why the Dolphins exist. This will force more Kayo subs as the Broncos won't be on free to air as much.

All clubs will be behind paywall more with extra content. Neither fox or nine had a preference after additional Brisbane club. Shows they see no money there

Sky TV isn't doubling there money to support another NZ club. Kayo would like more subs in WA. And if you have another Brisbane club, then there is less likely for the Broncos to be on TV. QLD has some of the lowest sub rates in Australia for Kayo. Kayo is only interested in getting more subs. That means content and content to the right markets that drive more subs. For Channel 9, another market could help drive advertising in WA if people show interest. Not to mention WA subs could go up if a WA team drives more interest in the sport.

The NRL can't just add another team unless they know who is paying for it. Not to mention they want to bed down a new team first.

I'd like to see your quote where Channel 9 and Kayo said anything of the sort.

Extra content is more important than location. Existing fans paying to see team behind paywall probably increase sub's. Idea Perth is dormant market that just needs a team to explode is narrative pushed by @Perthred but viewership figures say otherwise. All talk by NRL has been Brisbane & nz2 so if stakeholders pushing for Perth imagine NRL would too

Have had a think about the 18th club..

Realistically or economically I think they are only 2 options the NRL will consider.

1. Perth, leverage the WA government for a base and a refurb of HBF park (Western Stand). Personally am a fan of the Western Reds brand coming back, Pirates comes across a bit tacky and don't like the "West Coast". There is only one West Coast WA people will identify with and its the Eagles. Fox will like how the late kickoff can tie in with an extra live game on Saturday or Sunday.

or

2. Brisbane 3, based at a 25K north Ipswich reserve with derby games at Suncorp.

Say this as someone who loves NZ and spends a fair bit of time in South island (pre covid). It just won't have the economy and market to support a team, especially Christchurch. Have a look at the crowd averages of the Crusaders, realistically would a league team be able to maintain a 10K average over a season with more games than the union team who are world beaters yet struggle to get 10K to a game. Forget about Wellington not a lot of fans and Sky stadium is an oval. For arguments sake if you were going to do a NZ2 however unlikely this scenario is, you would be better off doing an Auckland 2 and having a game each weekend in NZ's biggest city.

Team 19-20....... In about 12-15 years time.

The thing with the 18th team is the media value is in the content of an extra game, not so much in location. An extra game regardless of whose in will generate 800k viewers a week. That’s why the nrl must use it as an opportunity to grow into anew market, wherever that may be. If it can’t sell the value of an extra game regardless of location of new club.
if the game can’t sell an extra game regardless of whose in then it has got massive market credibility and value problems!
Foxtel would probably throw money at a Monday night game. It was always a high rating fixture.

Perth does provide a new time slot.

NZ 2 would make the Fri 6pm slot less of a burden for the Australian clubs.

Another Brisbane team doesn't offer another time slot, but it would allow Ch9 to air a Bris vs Syd game on Thur, Fri and Sun.

I think News Ltd will want NZ 2 as it will give them more content for Sky NZ and Foxtel without undercutting the Broncos.
Ch9 would want Bris 3 as they don't have a stake in the NZ market.

I just about agree with most of this except for poinr2. i.e. brisbane 3, if the NRL were to leverage off of WA govt, they could do this for the QLD govt or PNG... hence cairns/PNG bid

We did. 25 years ago. Happy for Perth to join Bris 2 next to return those that were lost.
Arthurson and Quayle forced all four expansion clubs to cover the travel costs of the Sydney clubs. It bankrupted the Reds and Crushers. Cowboys and Warriors wouldn't have survived without News Ltd's money.

Don't see how Roosters moving from corporate heart of Australia's biggest city & their new 40k stadium to central coast would be best interest?!

Haha I was writing an essay in return and the site crashed. Anyway my thoughts are that both Manly and Roosters suffer similar problems: small compressed geographical locations, small supporter base and low junior base. There Isco also the issue of North Sydney and CC not

I think both clubs have the same problem: small area, limited juniors and small supporter base. You also have North Sydney and Central Coast which are bigger areas who are not serviced very well atm

I am a Tigers fan through and through but for one amazing year it’s been 20 seasons of failure. Balmain and Wests don’t get on and the merger is a flop. I am sick of the basket case. Move them the Perth. Then bring back the Bears.

Both those areas of Sydney are much bigger in terms of population & more lucrative for sponsorship etc. Juniors really don't matter because let's face it rooster use cc as catchment anyway. Roosters will never leave the city.

Probably not Manly - it is a beach suburb. They should at least try and branch out to North Sydney

Perth, NZ2 & Brisbane3 are all good options for a new team but there is realistically one new spot open for the next 15 years. Relocation is a short to midterm option if tv/NRL are looking for new markets/opportunities

https://www.zerotackle.com/nrl-urged-to-have-second-crack-at-perth-in-18-team-competition-111228/

NRL urged to have second crack at Perth in 18-team competition

Former Western Reds chairman Laurie Puddy has put forward a claim for the Reds to return to the NRL and become the league's 18th franchise.

The Perth based club were axed in 1997 when the ARL and Super League merged to make a 20-team league but Puddy believes that Perth should make a return to the national league by as soon as 2024.

The news comes after the Redcliffe-based Dolphins became the 17th team to enter the NRL last week after a successful expansion bid, edging out the Brisbane Jets and Brisbane Firehawks for the licence to join the competition from 2023.

The audacious claim that the NRL could jump to 18 teams by the end of 2024 will ruffle feathers at NRL HQ, who took 16 years to go from 16 teams to 17 despite the clear need for an extra team in the Brisbane market.

Roosters' chairman Nick Politis recently called for an 18th team to come from Queensland, however, Perth has held NRL games and State of Origin with success, and the added advantage of time zones for TV mean Puddy thinks his city holds the edge when it comes time for more expansion.

"It would take us two years," Puddy said speaking to The Daily Telegraph.

"I would drive it, but you might find there are other people in Perth who would want to have a crack too. The answer is we need to get a team into Perth."

The former Reds chairman has already met with ARL chairman Peter V'Landys about the prospect of the Western Reds returning to expand the league to 18 teams.

If the Reds are to return to the NRL, their home ground would be at HBF Park, where the Perth Glory play A-League home games, with a capacity of 20,500.

Marquee matchups could be played at Optus Stadium with crowds of up to 60,000, a proposition that excites Puddy.

"Souths go over there on a regular basis. Manly, Canterbury. They know the crowds they can pull – 20,000-plus. They get 5000 to 10,000 more people at Perth than they would do at a home game," Puddy said.

"Back in 1995, the population of WA was about 1.3 million. The population of Perth today is nearly three million."

"We had 24,000 people at our first game (in 1995) and averaged around 15,400 thereafter, and that was playing at the WACA, which is a cricket ground."

"I have business contacts and colleagues sitting in Perth waiting for something to happen. All they say is: 'Laurie, when is it going to happen?’ Support for the game isn’t in question. Why wouldn’t Perth be a success? We have done it before."

"If we couldn’t get 20,000 a game then I’m a bad judge. Back in 1994-95, we were inundated with support from sponsors."

NRL CEO Andrew Abdo has not ruled out an 18th expansion team for the league, but insists the main priority at the moment is getting the current expansion teams up and running.

"In the long-term, if there was further expansion, the ARLC would consider all options – from Western Australia to New Zealand and the Pacific," Abdo claimed.

"There are so many opportunities. Why would you want to exclude anywhere?"

"Right now our priority is ensuring the successful expansion of the NRLW to six teams and the NRL to 17 teams."

That would be great for the game. If we introduce Perth as the 18th team in 2024 and it and The Dolphins are successful then in 2028 there's the opportunity to bring in NZ 2 and Bris 3.

We need to be pro active and aggressive over the next 5-10 years as we've allowed our competitors to get so far ahead of us.

A Pacific team is pie in the sky stuff. PNG would be light years ahead and they're still decades away from being viable.

The NRL have shown that they don't care about attendance and the success of the clubs as businesses as long as the broadcasting and corporate side makes sense. If they did they wouldn't have just given a license to a club that intends to play roughly half it's home games at stadiums with capacities of 11.5k and 12k respectively...

NZ is a chance assuming the backing, broadcast, and sponsorship interest is there, and though I agree with you that it's stupid and I'm certain that it could change in a heartbeat, it's pretty obvious from the talk going around ATM that the NRL (or at least PVL and Abdo) intend to go to NZ next.

Im fairly sure that was the case, same time last year, but with the pandemic lockdowns and border restrictions stopping guys like gould and others travel to NZ to set up and lay out pathways, seems like they've opened up anyones a chance now.... even perth
