$1million forwards, are they worth it?

If the Cows don't win another premiership with JT, is just the 1 win and 1 loss value for an outlay of $10 million? It's all about perception I guess, and I'm sure the Cows will be a force again sooner rather than later.

See after the dust settles with JT, then a review will be a fair one. But if he goes to another club after his current stint, and starts playing the full 80 mins, I dare say thatbthe Cows won't be too pleased.

big hit!

Middles are shithouse without a support cast. You need 6 decent middles in a squad of 30 - 4 props and 2 locks - as that's the minimum you will have in a selected team of 17, and that doesn't even take into account injuries.

Not many middles play 80 mins, and there will be fewer with the new rules. Your best ones shouldn't be getting more than $700-800k

what an incredibly dumb thing to say. Using that logic, every team that doesn't win the comp has just wasted their entire salary cap that season.

The salary cap has to be spent. The cows are spending roughly 10% of it on one of the games best and most consistently good players. It's not JT's fault cowboys management has surrounded him with overpaid spuds

Thing is you seem to be able to get a decent forward for the $600-700k mark and I'm not sure a JT or Fifita gives you that much more in terms of chances of winning a game and getting to a GF than a Bromwich, Blake, Nelson etc. That extra $3-400k might land you another quality half back or FB that will make that difference. Not that spending a mill on a spine player is any guarantee, plenty of numties running around not earning that sort of coin.

firstly, JT and Fifita are better players than those mentioned. They are paid more because they absolutely do provide you more chances of winning games.
With JT's contract, increases in the cap could make his % of the cap the same as what a $600-700k salary is now.

The cowboys are the perfect example of blowing money on spine players that don't perform. Holmes are Morgan are currently stealing $2million from them and producing f**k all

The value of any player is determined by the make up of the whole squad and predicted squad of the next few years. Teams might risk paying overs in one position if they think they have an up and coming player in another position who is on a rookie contract.

I doubt JT will continue to play only 50min per game, first 30 and last 30min is best imo.

When the salary rises again next season and the following seasons, his contract will look great value.
Cows just have to wait a bit until Morgan's leg fly's off attempting to kick the ball and they can medically retire him. Some big money duds like Granville, O'Neil and Hampton will leave at the end of this season then Payten can start building around JT.

cap has been reduced 6% for next two seasons. It won’t go up again until 2023 and that will depend on the tv deal struck.

Morgan and Holmes have been plagued by injury and it's affected their form.

Taumalolo would be more effective if they played him for 50 minutes a game, subbing him off at the 25th minute and bringing Hess on to play lock while Jase has a rest, then bring Jase back on around the 55th minute mark. That way you're getting quality from both players. Hess isn't an 80 minute player but can have a huge impact coming off the bench as an impact player playing for 30.

Darren Lockyer made the interesting suggestion the other day of bringing Jason Taumalolo off the bench as impact player. They need to try something because 'the great metres Taumalolo makes per game' will get old if they keep losing. Unfortunately we won't know anytime soon because he is out for a month with a broken hand.

Val Holmes was quiet other night. One of the few touches he had one of them was a dropped ball in their own 20 when the Cowboys really under the pump. Holmes needs to put his hand up as a senior player to help them drag them out of it. I know he's a winger but I've seen Tuqiri and Rapana in their peak keep there teams alive in games being on the wing.

After three straight years in the bottom 4 I'd suggest that has happened already, and Payten is addressing it.

Not only on fullback money but on elite fullback money.
.
Payton is leaving his mark on the club. Too many high paid players at the cows that are not delivering whether via injury or questionable form. The cows need to let Payton run what is currently an asylum and not the inmates.

for a club like the Titans who aren't exactly the type who develops their own talent, they have to splurge around big bucks to get raw talent like David Fifita and "Big Tino"

if you're a club like Penrith or Newcastle who have usually always had a pretty good development system, you'd never pay that much

I think the deals that are over the course of 10 years are a recipe for disaster, see it a lot in American sports too

Pretty good summation. 10 year deals are not a good business decision IMHO. I recently watched the three part Titans doco on Fox Sports. It gave the situation a positive spin, but I don’t share the optimism of the doco makers. Way too much fluff and not enough substance. I'm all for individual players embracing their cultures, but they don’t necessarily bring success to sporting clubs. As much as I hate the Storm, they have managed to get the mixture of players cultures and hard work to work well. I guess time will tell with the Titans, but I am not confident but happy to be wrong.

I guess we'll find out if fifita can find it within himself to perform against his old club.

Have a soft spot for the Titans. Grew up on the NSW North Coast and always wished them well. Apart from John Cartwright’s first few years where they made the finals they have been miserable ever since. Hope the million dollar man does well. Always good to see them beat the Bronc’s

The legacy of getting carried away with a premiership win and re-signing average players on big overs for years at a time.
