My fear is a nuffy like Redmond who cleary was out of his league in the Test series against the Poms, will graft a 2 day ton against the Banga's and convince Bracewell he's the man for the job the rest of the season. Then, once we get back to playing the quality side's, will scrape around for mediocre scores of 20s and 30s and before you know it, another season's gone and were still short an opener.

Hopefully Redmond does come right so he can open the batting with Ryder and shift How to his best position at 3.

eh? ryder is bairly an opener in one day games (where he only averages 25 dont forget) but in tests hes a proven number 4 (where he averages 43). where as how has opened for as long as i can remember, and has only played at 3 for like 5 games.

im just waiting for guptil to get some experience.

id still like to think papps still has a chance, hes only like 27.

Yes it would have helped us sort out our batting lineup as well as give our bowlers some good opposition but we still have Bangladesh coming up which I feel will be more than useful before the up and coming summer.

Papps would go down as one of our worst openers in history. He's shocking at test level. Ryder should open imo as he does have the technique to face the new ball although his temperament could improve somewhat. Guptill is still another 2 years off international cricket imo but will probably be rushed into the team seeing depth in the opening batting position is very thin. We still haven't replaced Richardson.

thats what i reckon the selectors are thinking with redmond, they think he is a hard nosed opener who wont give away his wicket easily. i havent seen enough of him to know he can do it myself. in the last couple of seasons hes averaged over 40, which in our conditions is a good feat.

That's right. That's why i'm not gonna judge Redmond until after the Aussie series to see whether he's international class or not.

Well, he didn't get off to a good start against the Poms. Averaging 9. But i suppose a series against the Aussies will be a better guage. But imo, he just looks like another Cumming who we stuck with for far too long.

Also, in no way is Ryder a test opener. He shouldn't even be a number 3 that he's going to bat in this series. He doesn't have the technique or temperament. 4 or 5 is his best spot in the longer game where he can play his shots against an older ball. He'll get away with it against The Banga's, however the Aussies will soon expose him at 3.

Cumming wasn't that bad. He just never kicked on when getting good starts but would always see off the new ball.

I still think that Ryder can make it as a test opener. He does have the technique but obviously needs to work on his temperament. It can be done and this Bangladesh series is the chance to try these things.

He did average 25 which i suppose given the openers we've had since Richardson is one of the higher ones. Clearly though, passing 50 just once in 19 innings is not good enough and couldn't continue. I think all our batsmen are guilty of getting starts and not going on. We'll always struggle at Test level if they cant start converting these into decent scores.

I disagree on Ryder. If his temperament or natural game is that of a strokeplaying middle/lower order batsman. Then that's where, and how he should play. Trying to change someones natural game to cover for the shortcomings of your team would be doing a diservice to his abilities imo, and could stuff him up completely.

I felt for him when he got hit by Steyn in SA last year. He was set on 48 and looking comfortable until he got hit which also started a big collapse.

Yeah, pretty much. Although Ryder's been given the no.3 spot.

My ideal side.

Guptill (he's clearly got the talent. Redmond and co are just marking time till they deem him ready.)
How
Fulton (another one who must have had a run in with Braces)
Taylor
Ryder
Oram
McCullum (i dont like him batting at 5. Our strength is our lower order. Why weaken that for the shortcomings elsewhere)
Vettori
Mills
Southee
Martin

Boult (i think he's already surpassed Franklin on the left armer pace stocks. Certainly got a bit of pace about him with that whippy action)

Greg Hay is another one i'd have on the fringes. He's averaged around 50 for the last couple of seasons. Can cover opener or middle order.

I still don't think that Southee's test standard as yet. Sure he got 5 wickets on his debut but after that he hasn't looked like getting a wicket and I feel that O'Brien deserves another go after being our best bowler in England.
