all over 0-106

Hughes 86 NO (off 91) further increases his international batting average while I'm sure alot of people will still slate him for some reason.

Great knock Hughes, showing what he is capable of. Doubt it will silence any of his Knockers on here though.

How about scoring runs when the pressure is on..i.e the first innings. Easy to score when the pressure is off!

Not going to slate him but you still have to put that innings in context, seemed tailor made for him just to go for his shots.

I dont disagree, I just dont see why he gets bashed so much

he's a talented 20year old who is still learning his trade and has a way to go yet

I noticed no one commented on Katich's 18 runs off the same amount of balls that Hughes faced.

Edit: sorry that was minutes

Hughes 86 off 75 balls
Kat 18 off 65 balls

no, I would stick with Watson and Kat,

Hughes is the player in waiting as long as his first class form remains consistent

its good that he showed today what he is actually capable of, he's always been aggressive but it can also be his downfall

a bit like michael slater, how many times did he get out in the 90s, about 10 or 11, anyway good to know a capable batsmen is waiting, and don't forget khawaja in a year or two, mark waugh said he is one of the most technical batsmen he has seen in a while, whatever people want to think of waugh's opinion.

AB called Khawaja the left handed Tendulkar so I think its safe to say his technique is more than sound.

The pressure was on (a little anyway) when Clarke and North were fresh at the wicket, we were well in it then.

Yes, Hughes did EXACTLY fail in the first innings - his effort was of no value whatsoever

NZ's depth is just not good enough right now. I reckon Australia's 2nd XI could just about beat NZ.
I mean look at the blokes who can't crack the Australian team right now:
Hughes (when everyone is fit)
White
Khawaja
Smith
Klinger
Rogers
Jaques

These guys would be 1st choice if they were kiwis

some of them would for sure... esp openers, but I'd take Ryder and Williamson over them, and probably Taylor too... anyone who watches can see Taylor and Guptill are talented... but questions over mental strength I guess

again, we have a few losses through injury (Ryder, Oram and Bond notably - the latter two retired as a result).

But, as someone said earlier, at present our bats don't have the mindset... plus I still can't work out the Sinclair situation, 200 on debut, brilliant century in RSA, best first class bat in the country, perhaps a bit prickly... Aust have, and will, persevere with dodgy techniques (notably Hughes who you all rave about, but others too) if they produce... Sinclair gets a test against you lot, then is dropped again...

Can't question McIntosh's guts, nor Vetorri's... when McCullum can control himself he's world class, Taylor too... add Ryder and ultimately Williamson and we're looking ok...

Of course, we desperately need a wicket taker, now Bond and O'brien have gone, and Martin is near or past his use by date... but there's not one here at the moment - McKay is quick, that's a start I guess

Past it, and might I say, well past it.
