Morne Morkel to retire from all forms of international cricket to be with Aussie wife

FEBRUARY 27, 201810:16am
Ben Waterworth

CHAMPION South African bowler Morne Morkel has sensationally announced that he will retire from all forms of international cricket at the end of his country’s upcoming Test series against Australia.

The 33-year-old’s decision comes a shock to many in the cricket community, after a stellar 2017 calendar year for the Proteas that saw him take 39 Test wickets — his highest haul since 2010.

But Morkel, who enters the four-match series starting Thursday with the fourth-most Test wickets ever taken by a South African bowler, confirmed to reporters on Monday night (AEDT) that it was a family-first decision.

“It was an extremely tough decision but I feel the time is right to start a new chapter,” Morkel said.

“I have a young family and a foreign wife and the current demanding international schedule has put a lot of strain us. I have to put them first and this decision will only benefit us going forward.”

Morkel’s Australian partner, Roz Kelly, has been heading up Channel 10’s Big Bash League coverage over the past couple of seasons.

Morkel’s decision comes a week after foxsports.com.au reported that BBL club Brisbane Heat was ready to make a big play for giant Protea.

He insisted on Monday he hadn’t signed any deal yet, but admitted he still feels “there is a lot of cricket left in me”.

“I have loved every minute that I have played in the Proteas jersey and I am incredibly grateful to my teammates, Cricket South Africa and my family and friends for the support over the years,” Morkel said.

“I still feel there is a lot of cricket left in me and I am excited for what lies ahead. For now, all of my energy and focus is on helping the Proteas win the upcoming series against Australia.”

Morkel’s pace and bounce struck fear into the hearts of many world-class batsmen, taking 294 wickets at 28.08 across 83 Tests. If he takes at least six wickets against the Aussies during the upcoming series, he’ll become just the six South African bowler to take 300 Test wickets after Shaun Pollock, Dale Steyn, Makhaya Ntini and Allan Donald.

Across all three formats, Morkel has an impressive total tally of 529 wickets.

Acting Cricket South Africa chief executive Thabang Moroe said Morkel was part of a “golden era” of fast bowlers that helped make the outfit so successful and respected.

“Being a champion fast bowler is one of the most difficult professions in the sporting world,” Moroe said.

“It requires tremendous skill, dedication and perseverance and, by no means the least, the courage to bowl through the pain barrier at times. Those are characteristics Morne has shown throughout his career.

“Lastly, on behalf of the South African cricket family, our stakeholders and fans around the world, we thank Morne for being both a fine player and an outstanding role model who has made our country proud.”

Didn't realise his wife was Roz Kelly

Anyway, if it was an Australian announcing his retirement before a series in Australia would it be seen as selfish? Or depends?

No it wasn't, the only time it was selfish was when Clarke did it

Morkel going out while bowling very well, good for him
Sarcasm mate, S Waugh copped it deluxe by the likes of I Chappell and co. Said it was selfish that he wanted a big farewell tour. What a load of shit, as Waugh said at the time there would of been speculation all summer otherwise.

Yeah, very selfish of him to retire in the lead up to a series in Australia.....

Anyway, with the way both sides have been batting and the late season pitches, I'm gonna say neither side will score over 350 in the series

Yup talk of him getting the boot all summer before against the poms (remember that ton off the last ball of the day that eased the pressure)

I think the norm should be prior to your final test.

With Morkel I understand where he is coming from, I personally would have done this 12-18 months ago, as I think his little boy is 1-2yo now. He can make some easy coin playing in the bbl, and the odd t20 comp around the world

Don' really understand why anyone would criticize Waugh, like Border just an iconic figure IMO, such a shame they're Australians LOL - loved having AB here commenting recently, him and Bumble worth tolerating the other mediocrity

. What a selfish merkin

Well you got that part right....

If results in every test then we need to win 3 tests to regain the Quiney-Botha cup

Not sure we can win 3 tests here. Hoping one game is washed out or drawn , and we can manage 2 wins

Will be interesting - home advantage usually huge in test cricket atm, but with these two it's been a disadvantage

RSA are the better team imo if they can get all their cattle on the field - mainly because of a big advantage batting-wise - although Smithy might get some help from Davey in RSA

A new no8 to take on all other no8s...

https://www.cricket.com.au/news/sou...e-pass-radio-stream-broadcast-info/2018-02-28

There was a fair bit of rust-shedding and fine-tuning by the Aussies in their one and only warm-up match. It was an official first-class match, with Pat Cummins reacquainting himself with South Africa well in his first match in the country since his debut Test in 2011, taking 4-32 and hitting an unbeaten 59, interestingly batting at No.8 ahead of Mitch Starc. The South Africa A batsmen might suggest the Aussie spearhead was miffed by his demotion as he rampaged through them with 4-46 in a spell of searing pace and bounce.

The last time they met in South Africa, however, was a humdinger of a series. Mitchell Johnson and David Warner at the peak of their powers, and Steve Smith coming into his own. The Aussies stormed the gates at Centurion before the Proteas hit back in Port Elizabeth. It set up one of the great Tests of modern times in Cape Town. Warner hit centuries in each innings, a feat unbelievably overshadowed. Firstly Michael Clarke's courageous innings to put his body on the line, literally, of a short-pitched barrage that left him with a fractured collarbone as he posted an unbeaten 161. And then, as things got very heated as the match stretched into the fifth afternoon, Ryan Harris, bad knee and all, summoned an almighty effort to drag Australia to a famous victory.

That last test over there in 2014 was an absolute epic. From memory Smiffy got a key wicket with his filthy leggies in that last innings. Stayed up until 4am listening on the radio. Massive games from Clarkey and Warner too
