I think this has been blown way out of proportion. We have now had a situation arise from both origin camps.

Walker -

Intoxicated in public
Guilty of assualting Police officers,
Guilty of obstructing police officers,
Guilty of public nuisance
Police required to use capsicum spray to subdue

Penalty
Placed on a 12 month good behaviour bond
Fine of 10% of this years (reduced) salary
Attend a few meetings
Miss Origin 1
Miss a Roosters game

Gasnier -

Made an inapropriate phone call

Penalty
Fine (Unknown amount)
Expulsion from SOO (Potentially long term or permanent)
Suspended from club (Timeframe unknown at this stage)

One of these appears excessive to me.

So let me get this straight. One of these other blokes was holding poor Gaaaaz down, the other was forcing him to dial the number and telling him what to say, while Mini was in the front seat chatting away to the cab driver about Iraq?

Three more in the frame
By Anthony Peterson, Michelle Cazzulino and AAP
May 21, 2004

ARL chief executive Geoff Carr has identified three more New South Wales players as being involved in the State of Origin phone sex scandal.

Gasnier - sacked by his State, suspended by his club.

Carr told Sydney radio station 2GB he will speak to the trio today and it's expected he'll be calling on them to come forward and admit their involvement.

Carr yesterday sacked Mark Gasnier from the NSW Origin team for making the call after a team drinking session, but said there had been only one voice on the tape.

Today, after Sydney radio station 2GB played computer-enhanced excerpts from the tape, Carr conceded there is more than one voice.

"What we did last night was went back to the Origin camp and re-interviewed a player," Carr told Sydney radio station 2GB.

"We have to get another player to admit he was there.

"What I said to the players in the pre-camp was that if everyone blinks you will be front and back page.

"I also said if you do anything wrong we will be hanging them out to dry.

"We're not in a position of trying to defend anybody.

"We're going to continue to try to get to the bottom of it.

"We will continue to go over what we already know, we will continue to talk to players."

Carr yesterday called newspaper reports of the phone message a "media beat-up" before holding two press conferences in the space of four hours, finally announcing Gasnier's sacking from the NSW side.

Gasnier was subsequently fined and suspended by his club St George Illawarra while Brisbane's Michael De Vere was called into the Blues side as his replacement.

But DeVere will have to wait until Sunday to join his team-mates after coach Phil Gould ended the Origin camp last night – 24 hours early.

"In talking to security ... some phone calls were made prior to people getting in a cab," said Carr.

"Hotel security has been a bit vague with that as well.

"I was of the belief that the phone call was made prior to getting in the cab.

"What I think is they were waiting for a cab. But I may be wrong."

Meanwhile, Gasnier's club, St George Illawarra, last night fined and indefinitely suspended the 22-year-old centre as the game was rocked by its latest scandal involving how players treat women.

But the lid came off the crisis about midday when team officials heard the voice message left for a 27-year-old woman, asking her in explicit terms to have group sex with four players.

They then confronted Gasnier, who conceded he made the call using Origin teammate Anthony Minichiello's mobile phone at 3.41am on Wednesday. Minichiello had told officials his phone was lost and he had not made the call.

Last night, Gasnier issued a statement in which he apologised for his actions.

"I will make contact with the person to personally apologise," he said.

"I was under the influence of alcohol but I understand I have to be responsible for my actions."

Gasnier, the nephew of league legend Reg Gasnier, also said he had apologised to his girlfriend, family and the Dragons for his misdemeanour. "I have paid a huge price for my actions in the circumstances," he said. "It has been my life ambition to play State of Origin."

The new crisis to hit the game - just weeks after police announced they had insufficient evidence to prosecute up to six Bulldogs players over rape claims - erupted after an Origin team bonding night.

The 27-year-old Sydney woman awoke on Wednesday to hear a message on her mobile phone which had come from Minichiello's mobile phone.

In the message, Gasnier said there were four men in a taxi looking for sex. Their names were not mentioned.

NRL boss David Gallop yesterday did not hide his disappointment.

"Respect for women could not have been any higher on the agenda for everyone in the game," he said.

Earlier yesterday, Carr was quick to denounce The Daily Telegraph for reporting a "massive beat up" that the woman had complained to Minichiello's Roosters' club call.

He said he believed Minichiello's story he lost his phone at Star City Casino. But casino staff examined footage and did not find any evidence of his phone being lost or stolen.

Carr said there was only one voice on the message and the call was made before Gasnier caught a taxi.

However, The Daily Telegraph maintained there were two different voices on the message.

Carr's initial comments yesterday were made after management confronted Origin players and they denied having done anything wrong.

The players and coaching staff also closed ranks, believing it to be a media-driven agenda.

But the defence of the players changed rapidly when NRL officials received a copy of the voice message and recognised a player's voice.

When it was identified as Gasnier's, he was played the tape and admitted immediately it was him despite being unable to remember making a call.

Last night coach Gould addressed the team, re-stressing the importance of the messages he had made soon after the camp began on Monday about behaviour. If Gould's advice had been followed, Wednesday morning's incident would not have happened.

Chook, I found an article in the Telegraph that is saying there were two voices. I also think that Hadley has been saying it. Unfortunately there is so much heresay, I'm having trouble keeping up with what has been published via the media and what has been made up for interesting reading on the forum. I'll hunt down the link to the Teleucrap.

Then it will be the management and coaching staff and anyone who had a beer. the SOO will be cancelled due to the phonegate affair. QLD will win by forfeit as NSW will all be dropped.

Sex scandal? I thought it was a phone call? And only one at that. Even the cops couldnt do anything except suggest you apologise. 1 call isnt enough for anything to happen.

More quizzed over obscene call
By Peter Lalor, Stuart Honeysett and wires
May 21, 2004

RUGBY league chief executive Geoff Carr will interview three more players over the phone sex scandal that led to the axing of NSW star Mark Gasnier.

Associate ... Anthony Minichiello's phone was used to place the call.

Carr told Sydney radio station 2GB he would speak to the trio today and it's expected he'll be calling on them to come forward and admit their involvement.

Carr yesterday sacked Blues debutant Gasnier for making the call after a team drinking session, but said there had been only one voice on the tape.

Today, after Sydney radio station 2GB played computer-enhanced excerpts from the tape, Carr conceded there was more than one voice.

"What we did last night was went back to the Origin camp and re-interviewed a player," Carr said.

"We have to get another player to admit he was there."

There were also reports by callers to Ray Hadley's 2GB program that fellow Blues and Bulldogs player Willie Mason had acted inappropriately at a fans' day in western Sydney yesterday.

Mr Hadley told Bulldogs' boss Malcolm Noad that Mason had drawn men's, women's and male dogs' genitalia in between signing autographs for fans.

Mr Noad said he was "stunned" and promised to investigate the claims.

The latest sex scandal to hit the code could lead to Gasnier being suspended by his club, St George-Illawarra.

Investigations are continuing into several other players involved in the all-night drinking binge.

It is understood at least two voices are audible on the tape.

Last night, the NSW Rugby League abandoned its State of Origin camp early and cancelled today's training in the wake of the scandal.

Gasnier, apologising to the woman involved and his partner, said: "I was under the influence of alcohol but I understand I have to be responsible for my actions.

"I have paid a huge price for my actions in the circumstances. It has been my life ambition to play State of Origin."

The code's latest crisis came as league chiefs were holding a forum on sexual harassment issues arising out of the Bulldogs' Coffs Harbour scandal.

NSW Origin players held a team bonding session on Tuesday night and were drinking at a hotel in Coogee, in Sydney's eastern suburbs, until 3am.

At least four players, including Gasnier and Sydney Roosters fullback Anthony Minichiello, decided to keep drinking and called a cab, reportedly to go to Star City casino.

At 3.41am, a woman who knew Minichiello received a phone call from his mobile phone, which went through to her message service.

"(Victim's name), where the f..k are you? There's four toey humans in the cab - it's 20 to four. Our cocks are fat and f..king ready to spurt sauce and you're in bed. F..k me - fire up, you sad c..t," the caller said before hanging up.

The woman reported the call to the Roosters club.

There were reports later of three rowdy players on a State Transit bus heading back to Coogee at 7am.

League chiefs initially tried to play down the scandal, saying Minichiello's phone had been stolen, but were forced to act after hearing Gasnier's voice on the message tape.

Now, the question that needs answering is why if Mark Gasnier called this girl, did she feel the need to contact the Roosters and inform them of the obscene phone call? Shouldn't she have contacted the Dragons and why was Brian Canavan trying to cover his own players? How did she know it was a Rugby League player?

I'm sure you can see where I'm coming from here can't you? A Roosters player in the squad is in it up to his neck. I don't know which one but it's obvious we are yet to hear the full story and why were other players protected and Gaz left haning in the breeze if Roosters management knew who else was involved?

Just like to point out we also know Minichello lied about his mobile phone being stolen to try and cover his own arse. I think that is an important piece of the puzzle when you look at the bigger picture.

I am listening to 2ue on the internet and it has been announced that O'meilly, Waterhouse and Mason are in the NRL at the moment. It has been reported that Mini wasn't with them. That when they lucked out with the lady they called they then went to a brothel. They will be investigating how they got Mini's phone. He hasn't been asked to go to the NRL. Also it expected that all three will be dropped from SOO and it has also been reported they believe Mason will be sacked by the Bulldogs.

Only reporting the news as it comes in.

Legend - because she had Anthony Minicello's number in as "Anthony Minicello". It came up as one missed call from minicello and the message played. She figured hey that's Minicello and rings up the roosters - very simple.

If they were as shitfaced as they must have been to be stupid enough to leave that message there's every chance Minicello left his phone at star city.

They are finding out now how they came to have his phone.

Was the phone call actually made in the cab without Minichello there or before that when he was there? There are a few unanswered questions and you can bet that Minichello will be required to answer some of them as well as a few others.

Who would you replace them with? Is there anyone left to come into the side?

Clinton, Menzies and Stevens perhaps? Would give the side a very experienced look.
