2005 Trading

I thought I'd sticky this thread to take us through developments culminating in the official AFL trade week in October.

As a starting point, Carlton's (alleged) efforts to work a behind the scenes deal involving Brendan Fevola are quite intriguing. It has been a mere three months afterall, since the club saw fit to give him a lucrative new 3 year deal.

It would appear that Richmond looms large as the most likely offload destination.

Fevola is a tosser to be sure, and remains an eternal risk because of his inherent tosserishness, but he does have ability when he gets his head in the right place.

Fevola @ FF and Richo @ CHF would make for a very potent attacking KPP tandem.

Presumably any deal would involve the Tigers first pick in the draft (number 8), which I would have seen them using on one of the more highly rated young KPP on offer. Fevola's experience and proven ability (when at his best) would make such a trade palatable to Wallace. Assuming that KPP is their intent for the pick, given that plenty of people have been telling me that midfield remains the central Tiger focus.

Interesting.

From my own side, Crawford and Hay appear to be front and centre to forthcoming trade talks surrounding the club.

Essendon will probably try and offer us one of their soon to be delisted hacks + the privilege of paying half of Crawfords large salary then act all offended and run crying to the media when we tell them to take a high flying bonk at a low rolling donut!

Offer up your second round pick and you may have a chance, boys...

Hay is being mentioned in dispatches regarding the Kangaroos, but I don't know what they could give us in return.

Frankly, I'd be pushing hard to the hoop with Freo for a Hay+Osborne for Polak deal, with the young KPP prospect believed to be disgruntled with the Dockers.

I strongly suspect that all trades involving the pair will fall through and that both will still be at the club next year.

4 words ...

Tony Lockett, Barry Hall

Personally, I think his problems with Pagan are his biggest problem.

With Browny and Tambo at their feet.

Yes, yes I can see that working ;-)

Personally, that is a bloody sensational forward line. Especially given with Fevola in the forward line ... Richo's days of being triple teamed by gutless backmen who aren't an inch the player he is would be over.

----------------------

Hawthorn has also been mentioned as a possible Fevola destination Kev. Given the draft picks at their disposal ... They would be in the stronger position.

Shane Woewodin is another worth discussing.

There is horrible talk Wallace would be interested?!

What you think? At Collingwood or elsewhere?

Does any team really have a need for him?

I believe the following trade could negate the need for using either of the high Hawthorn picks...

HAWTHORN sends Jonathon Hay to the Kangaroos & Michael Osborne or Nick Ries to Carlton.

KANGAROOS send Shannon Grant to Carlton.

CARLTON send Fevola to Hawthorn.

Depends what price tag he has on his head.

Could still provide useful extra depth to a midfield.

Carlton would probably also be interested given their lack of midfield depth.

At Hawthorn, I'd prefer to pick-up Shannon Hurn with pick 3 and let the Shane boy slide.

News fresh in on SEN is that Fremantle are pushing hard to the hoop for one Jonathon Hay.

For much of the year I have been campaigning hard on the slogan "Hay to WA with a hack for Polak", and now it seems that we may have a chance to pull it off without need for the hack.

Polak is, to this point, an unfulfilled talent at Freo and he is clearly unhappy at the club. He is also best mates with Trent Croad and methinks that a change of club could be just the ticket to reignite his stalling career.

On the downside, he doesn't appear a natural fullback, so we would be hoping that Tim Boyle can stand-up to replace Hay down back.

On the upside, he is five years younger than Hay, already commands better average stats, can play up forward, and isn't a total spaz when forced to use the ball.

Its a gamble, for sure, but one well worth taking for mine.

Osborne & Shannon Grant at current value are not worth 2 top 10 picks. Won't happen.

Except that Carlton are, as I understand it, both jack of Fevola as a person and keen to offload the expense of his contract.

The bigger sticking point to this trade would be Grant's asking price, which would be too rich for my blood. Carlton are hot for Grant, which surprises me, as while he is a handy footballer, he is nevertheless still merely a HFF.

Hawthorn is now pushing harder with Freo for Polak, so the proposed trade is pretty much a moot point.

I have a gut feeling that Fevola will be in red, white & black next season.

Goddard??

Polak - That would be a sensational pick-up for the Hawks IMHO - I was keen on him coming to Richmond to be honest.

Yeah, Goddard appears surplus to need @ Moorabbin, although they'd also probably need to part with their first pick, and the Blues may think that St Kilda's pick is a little on the low side, although this is considered an even draft.

Try telling that to some Hawk tragics. I'm stunned at the number who are convinced that the sky will fall in if we trade Hay.

Er, hello, he has been at fullback during the past two years as we've finished 15th & 14th. All he really does is sit tight on an opponent & punch, and while he generally does this effectively, I can't believe we can't get another KPP type to do a similar job. I'd actually rather see Boyle playing FB than Hay anyway. Hay is a liability whenever he gets it into his head to try and play offensively, given that his skills are quite tragic for a player who is 26 going on 27.

Trading is always a gamble, but I've seen more worrying trades put to us than this. Besides, there's no better time to have a crack than when you're camped in the bottom four and undergoing a major restructure. This will surely be the last chance we get to offload Hay for a good return.

After having a day to think about Fev's actions, i tend to think that he will go to the saints and gehrig will retire. Rather hope not but that's what i think. Like to see him wear yellow and black

I don't know - Thomas doesn't get along with Fraser - Would he want to replace 1 headcase with another?

Regardless of ability.

You forget that Thomas is dwarfed by his own ego and honestly believes he can turn water into wine.

The one that I keep hearing out of Essendon is Mark Bolton and a high pick for a play on Woewodin

Crawford is worth a first round pick and a useful player in return.

Essendon have to cough up if they want a champion in Crawf.

Wouldnt mind seeing Polak in brown and gold for Hay.

How high a pick are they talking?

Bolton is the very definition of a "DUDley Do-wrong", but from the other side of the coin, Woewodin is nowhere near the player he was when he won the Brownlow in 2000.

Sounds like a lose/lose, although it depends on what transpires with the pick.

It would be the higest pick probally, and it would include one of out yougsters as well. Bolton is not that bad he just needs to find where he plays. He plays a different position every week for essendon, so as fans we have no idea how good he could be. Knowing Collingwood they would want him and a draft pick at the least!

Are we talking high as in high in the order, or high as in high in number?

Lawd Gawd, I bloody well hope its the latter!

Otherwise Collingwood would cream themselves silly about snaring pick 7 for Woewodin, and wouldn't concern themselves with Bolton and the youngster.

I dont want Crawf to leave but if push comes to shove and he wants to go to Essendon, they better give their pick number 7 and a useful player like Cupido.

Hawks picks 3, 6 and 7...sweet

Cyber, word is that it is pick 7, which is unfortuate but from an Essendon's point of view Woewoedin would be a good pickup and I am happy to forgo that pick, and get Woewoedin!
