2007 - A year of discovery and rebuilding

You blokes have lost the plot.

Aiton has got half or 5/8th written all over him in years to come. He's not big enough to play in the forward pack in the modern game.

Jennings will be a regular starter in the centres in first grade by mid season 2007.

You all know my feelings on the 5/8th spot. Craig Gower should go there to fill the void.

You have lost the plot if you seriously think Aiton can change his game entirely and convert to Five-eight or Halfback.

He'd need to adjust his defensive position, get a first grade quality kicking game, be able to create plays rather than just running the ball...2/3 he can't do.

He is a dynamic runner of the football, he can create opportunities through that. But he cannot set up a play, he cannot put an attacking kick in and those are the attributes of a halfback or five-eight in the game today. Aiton cannot do that.

He is a ball runner. He can play lock. He can play that conventional lock game of being cover defender and also help at dummy half where his running game will be an asset. Thats where his future lies...at lock and eventually hooker. He has not played anywhere else and should not.

Don't forget he has been playing under John Lang, who has about as much imagination as a dead tree frog.

A lot of these really gifted and skillful players have all those attributes if they are given some free reign and allowed to use them.

I wouldn't be surprised if Aiton can kick a football, and wouldn't be surprised at all to see him become a great ball player in the future given the opportunity and some good COACHING.

LOCK!

Sammut should be five-eight.

I rate the kid as a super player, but after today he is superhuman.

I still have my reservations about Jarrod.

His lack of size worries me big time.

mate....didn't worry him yesterday...tackled anything that moved.

I watched his defence super close.

I even took stats

34 tackles, 2 missed, 3 try savers

Not bad for someone who can't tackle.

People also said Gordon and Aiton couldn't tackle last year as well.

If he puts on 5kg of muscle in the off-season I have no doubt he'll be fine.

He is already the most talented ball player at the club imo...and that includes Gower.

He knows how to score a try thats for sure. He can also goal-kick which is an advantage. I believe he should get a start off the bench next year when Aiton moves to the starting line up. He'll then be ready for a starting position in 08'.

Sammut can be groomed for fullback if he is deemed to be too small for a first grade 5/8th.

He is a great support player and perhaps playing as a Darren Lockyer clone will be better for him.

I'd then throw Rodney into 5/8th to beef up the first line defence.

Wesser would have to retire first obviously

Big Mick and I cannot agree on everything and I respect his opinions.

IMO Sammut is a Matty Bowen type player and his best position is fullback. This is position he would most likely succeed in the NRL and certainly he is not going to get the opportunity in that position for at least a couple of seasons, injuries permitting.

hey i don't care whether he plays Fullback or Five-eight...i'm the biggest supporter of his either way. At Fullback he can act as a third half in attack anyway...so it wouldn't make much difference to me.

I just want to see him on the field for us in either Five-eight or Fullback. Any other position could be too much of an ask for him.

What I know for sure about Sammut is certain members of the remaining coaching and training staff rate him very highly and they are in no doubt he has the goods to make it at the top level.

i'll keep my excitement under raps.

But as my dad said on Sunday during the game

"They can't deny you any more Jarrod"

I absolutely agree.

As in American Football in would be great if you could bring on a player solely for particular play, Sammut would be a superstar in the NRL. Imagine being able to bring him on each time we enter the opposition 20. He can be almost unstoppable close to the line.

I know I am repeating myself and I sincerely hope he proves me wrong but opposition will target him where ever he defends in the line and I fear another Preston.

In any event it will be very interesting to see how the Jarrod Sammut story pans out in the years to come.

Sammut needs to bulk up a bit, but he will play first grade eventually - perhaps next year. I think Elliott will take a punt and name him in the 25.
