I just wonder if there might be a market for that time slot in Melbourne. Dunno whether they Ballet in Boots performs at that time or not, but it is the hottest part of the day in our coldest city...People can get out and enjoy the sunshine while they watch the footy. Just a thought.

Agreed. Maybe a similar time slot on Saturday afternoons as well!

Can't wait for Storm to get a MNF game to be honest!

True. It looked just as packed as some of those Melbourne Victory games played there in the past.

Again, I don't know the dynamics or demographics of Melbourne's catchment but the traditional problem with early Saturday games was that kids are out playing sport and parents are out watching, ferrying them around etc., resulting in generally lower crowds for that timeslot.

Agreed.

Sounded like 14-15 and the (long) cues at the food outlets are normally a good indicator of a better than usual crowd.

Roll on the new stadium. OP is such a dump.

$100 says it's mostly Soufs fans... but nonetheless.
on the telly it seemed that 10,000 of them were souths fans.

You both have an agenda, hows about stop the Sharks bashing and stick to the farkin thread Title. 10k Souths supporters? Your on farkin drugs, would of been lucky to be about 1,000. Its just blatent bullsh*t the stuff Timmah is coming up with.

Cronulla v Brisbane in Round 9 will be a f**king travesty.

So there is more Panther supporters in Brisbane? Stop the dribbling.
By the way , piss poor crowd at Homebush today.

OP isn't allowed to hold 18.5K anymore, Im pretty sure that the maximum capacity now the venue can hold is just shy of 16K, so really crowds like today and against the Tigers are going to be close to the maximum the club will be able to fit in.

Still not that it's all bad, in the short term, so long as Olympic Park looks and feels full, people are going to keep coming back, sponsors are going to be happy, and memberships are going to increase as people try and ensure they don't miss out on games. It's also going to reduce the knockers not only here but throughout the NRL.

 It's a widely acknowledged fact that numbers are turning up for Souths. To suggest that a majority weren't Souths fans is ludicrous.

...And you're damn right Cronulla v Brisbane in Round 9 will be a f**king travesty. Storm v Bulldogs has been relegated to Monday Night Football to accommodate two clubs who are stumbling badly. If the game is screened live, expect a sans-10k crowd at Toyota that night.

And you're not wrong, the crowd at Homebush was woeful today, and I can admit that. A much bigger effort is needed.

As I said, anything under 30k is horrendous next week. Forbidding a storm on top of the ground there should be 30k easily.

I think 30,000 is a lot more realistic than the 40K some are mentioning. It would be great if it was 40 but realistically Sydney "derby"games even featuring the Doggies just don't get 40,000.

Souths are an unknown quantity to an extent though it has to be said back in late 80s when going well they didn't set the world alight.

I'd predict 30,000. Hope for 35,000.

And ICE....f**k you...what was the crowd in Melbourne?? EXACTLY...we kicked your ass by 2,000 people...and you come on here having a go at me about it :sarcasm: absolute idiot.

Anyway, let me know what you think after next Friday. There'll be more than Melbourne draw in 4 weeks at the Souths v Dogs game next week.

You must be so very proud that your team that has been in existance for over 70 years playing in leagues heartland on a gorgeous Sydney day yesterday "kicked the ass" of a team crowdwise by 2000 (it was actually 1828) that are only in their 10th year of the comp and play in the AFL heartland.

We had to start at noon, we had the swimming championships right across the road as well as an AFL game a few hours later which drew 60,000 plus to compete with to get their dollars and their arses on our seats. All those things considered not to mention the fact that in our 2 home games so far this season we've averaged 2,338 more people than last year, i think we're doing pretty well down here. Yep, you must be so proud that you "kicked our ass" mattyboy

Oh and i hope you do get the corwd you projected next week i really do, it'll be great for the game. But considering it's two Sydney sides there's no excuse why you shouldn't get what you said. If it's a nice day then anything less than 30,000 will be a disappointment IMO. As for that game drawing more than Melbourne's games for the next 4 weeks i'm willing to bet you any amount of money you like that won't happen, it'll be the easiest money i've ever made. You're known for making rash and just plain stupid calls matty but that one is right up there with the best of them

Wonder what the crowd for Melb would be in direct competion with the AFL matches?

They've had some of their best crowds down there when in competition with AFL matches.

I was at Olympic Park yesterday, and when the crowd size was announced, most people around us could not believe it. It was easily larger than the opening game, and I thought, slightly less or on par with our last year's crowds versus the Broncos and the Eels final. I was sure we'd cracked the 14k barrier, and was pushing 15k.

I have never seen such long queues to get in the Eastern and the Western - and I only think they had a problem counting on the turnstiles or something - anyway, it was almost as controversial as the Slater no try decision.

It was a great crowd, great weather, and considering the timing of the game it is another promising sign of the healthy state that the NRL is in Victoria.

On tv especially, the difference of watching a practically full Storm game, versus practically empty stadiums elsewhere is nothing short of ironic...

I hope the revival of the bunnies continues, as they might be one of the savours in terms of sydney crowds this year...again, another ironic twist.

everyone knows that less than 30,000 will be a dissapointment. We should get a great deal more than that figure.

I just find it hypocritical for a Storm fan to have a go at me about crowds when they consistently get less than us.

The factors for each are different matty - given the difference in the market we should by rights be doubling Melbourne's figures, but we aren't and that needs to step up.

there is no defending that dogs crowd yesterday, i was there at about 1 and was hoping it would build up but it never did, very dissapointing and only 14,000 there is nothing flash at all. With our fan base,we really should be averaging closer to 20,000 a game, this friday should pass 30k and im hoping for more then 35k which is possible, well ill be there anyways and hope to see plenty of others.

Did any one notice how for the past 3 weeks there has been a Swans adds in the telegraph every day, and how there has been s*&tloads of adds on channel 10 promoting the Swans game.

And 62 Thousand turn up, correct me if I'm wrong but other than double headers has rugby league ever had a club game crowd that big in 100 years.

Goes to show if you market the game well, advertise, and offer free travel to the game, it will be successfull.

If your not a die hard league fan you would dead set struggle to know when the games are on and who is playing who.

Souths are the only team advertsing games, even away games...
