GENTLE HAPPY WITH TOYOTA CUP TRIAL

Wests Tigers Toyota Cup Coach Peter Gentle has taken plenty of positives out of the 24-20trial loss to Canberra Raiders at Mollymook Oval this morning.

Exciting Wests Tigers winger Peni Tagive scored two tries, including one with his first touch of the ball. Other tryscorers for Wests Tigers were centres Matt Parata and Joey Latham, and winger Noa Fotu.

Gentle nominated five-eighth Robert Lui, prop Matt Davidson, prop Ben Shea, full-back Blake Lazarus, winger Ben Vengoa, lock Damon Harth and half-back Wayde Dunley as players to stand out in a very good team performance.

The Titans Under 20's beat Wynnum Colts. Can't remember the score sorry but it was around 44-16 i think. Wynnum did quite well really and the scoreline wasn't really a true reflection of the game. Cameron White was the best for the Titans at fullback (think he got a hat trick) and winger Kev Gordon got two tries.

The Broncos under 20's lost 12-6 to the Wynnum Seagulls premier side. The broncos try was in the last fifteen seconds. Wynnum scored three tries. Wynnum did well as the Broncos had the ball for most of the night so they had to do alot of defending. No one really stood out for them in my opinion although Alex Glenn had a pretty good game at 5/8.

Penrith were very under-strength. Half the team played in the First Grade trials and Waddell and Graham played Sg Ball.

The Northern Pride beat the Cowboys U/20s in a trial played at the Cairns JRL Ground.
I believe the game was meant to have been played in Mackay, but was shifted due to the flooding down there.
Score not known at the time, my source was very unimpressed with the Pride's standard of playing.

I think it was 26-20.

The Eels knocked Roosters over 39-34. Entertaining game, the Eels outmuscled us in the first half, up 26-12, we got to a 28-26 lead before getting run down. Good to see a second rower (from memory) knocking over a field goal in the last minute.

Knights won against Cronulla 26-22 on the weekend.
The Knights started with a very experimental side including fullback Marty Paulson playing halfback and doing the worst job i've ever seen - he keep stopping before the line and throwing passes that went behind the support player and to ground time after time.

Anyway - Cronulla ran up an 18-0 lead in very quick time before the Knights put Tyne Owen on at hooker and Joel Burraston at halfback and rattled up 26 unanswered points and looked pretty slick.
Cronulla got a soft try in the last minute to round out the scoring.
Good for the Knights were hooker Tyne Owen, winger Jared Edwards, forwards Joel Edwards, Scott Dobbins and Justin Schirnack.
I don't know the names of any of the Cronulla boys, but most of their backline looked good.

Jared Edwards makes a break.
He is a big athletic kid who looks like his firstgrade trial against the warriors was well deserved. He played very well in the Newcastle comp for Macquarie scorpions after the ball season last year and was talked about for the Newcastle rep side.

Number 14 in this pic is George Morseau, a Torres straight islander who played Ball and a bit of Flegg last season and is looking very strong.
Over his shoulder is Scott Dobbins, several times NSW rep second rower who looks about 5kg heavier and a lot fitter this year. He played all but a few minutes of the trial and was the hardest working forward on the field, as well as being the hardest hitting.
On the left of the pic is current NSW rep hooker Tyne Owen, who i'd say is the best player in the squad at the moment. He is captain and really does run the side in attack and defence.

That second rower was Tony Williams. He will be playing 1st grade some time through out the year.
