IMPRESSIVE TRIAL WIN FOR VODAFONE JUNIOR WARRIORS IN HAMILTON

Auckland, New Zealand, February 12, 2009 – The Vodafone Junior Warriors made an encouraging start to their preparations for the 2009 National Youth Competition with a seven tries-to-one victory over a Waikato Selection in their trial at Waikato Stadium in Hamilton tonight.

Facing senior opponents, the Vodafone Junior Warriors were largely untroubled in winning the contest despite being locked at 6-6 early in the first half.

The side has lost several players from the line-up that was just seconds away from reaching the inaugural NYC grand final last year.

But tonight’s outing showed off several players with ample potential.

One of them was young halfback-standoff Shaun Johnson from Hibiscus Coast.

He had a hand in each of the side’s first three tries and also kicked his first five conversion attempts before missing one.

Winger Brandon Nixon, another impressive performer, scored two tries.
Match details:

At Waikato Stadium, Hamilton
Vodafone Junior Warriors 38
Brandon Nixon 2, Ryan Laurenson, Peter Mills, Kurt Kara, Gowan Duff, Siuatonga Likiliki tries; Shaun Johnson 5 conversions

Waikato Selection 6

Halftime: 24-6 Vodafone Junior Warriors

Junior Warriors unearth talent in convincing win

Multi-talented Elijah Niko turned his homecoming into a personal celebration by scoring four tries for the Vodafone Junior Warriors in their 74-4 trial win against the Hawke’s Bay Unicorns in Napier today (Saturday).

Educated at St John’s College, the 18-year-old excelled in front of family and friends as the Vodafone Junior Warriors racked up their second big preseason win in less than 48 hours.

On Thursday night they cleared away from a Waikato Selection to win 38-6 in Hamilton before heading to Napier for another hit-out ahead of their 2009 NYC campaign.

Niko signed with the Vodafone Junior Warriors last year and was soon joined at the club by his younger brother Kenny.

Today the older of the siblings underlined why he’s seen as yet another of the exciting new faces expected to make an impact for the Vodafone Junior Warriors this year.

Able to play in the second row or at prop, Niko played Bartercard Cup football for the Central Falcons and he’s also an outstanding volleyball player, making the New Zealand Under-17 team in 2006.

While he was the standout performer in today’s trial, there were strong displays from centre Rusty Bristow – also outstanding in Hamilton on Thursday night – as well as hooker Alehana Mara, new prop Luke Laban and standoff Simon Gibson.

Several players backed up after appearing in Hamilton as the Vodafone Junior Warriors scored 13 tries in all.

Match details:
At Park Island, Napier
Vodafone Junior Warriors 74
Tries: Elijah Niko 4, Alehana Mara 2, Jason Cook, Bill Tupou, Gowan Duff, Kyle Bos, Rusty Bristow, Siuatonga Likiliki, Kevin Locke; Conversions: Kevin Locke 5, Brandon Nixon 3, Kurt Kara 3

Hawkes Bay Unicorns 4
Tries: Pen Pilamo
Halftime: 38-0

Baby Broncos rain on comets

RUGBY LEAGUE: You couldn't wipe the smile off Capella product Guy Ford's face at Browne Park on Saturday night after captaining the “Baby” Broncos to a memorable victory.
On a wet and slippery night, the Brisbane Broncos under-20s rained on the Central Comets' kick-off to 2009 with an impressive 34-6 trial win.
Ford, one of four locals in the “Baby” Broncos side alongside Rockhampton's Brent Williams and Jake Granville and Gladstone's Brendon Gibb, had the honour of leading out the NRL club onto Browne Park in front of family and friends.
“It was a big highlight to run the boys out in Rocky,” said Ford, who graduated from renowned rugby league school Yeppoon's St Brendan's College in 2006.
“It was a good hit-out. All my mates and family were in the crowd.”
With a big crowd on hand for the Valentine's Day clash, the Broncos were showing no loving from the outset and took just nine minutes to open the scoring when fullback Dale Copley sliced through to score under the posts.
Granville, who lives with Ford in Brisbane and was also a member of the all-conquering St Brendan's team of 2006, made it a special return home when he dived over from dummy half to double the lead in the 20th minute.
Ten minutes later, Alan Rothery celebrated his first game for the Comets when the former Canberra NRL forward and Rockhampton star barged over and halfback Nat Bowman converted from out wide.
Leading 12-6 at halftime, it took big Broncos forward Dunamis Lui just two minutes after the break to extend the visitors' lead after waltzing under the posts untouched after a neat pass from Granville.
When a dazed Mick Esdale was escorted from the field five minutes later, it only got worse for the Comets when Broncos winger Max Dudley touched down in the corner to finish off a superb team try.
Impressive five-eighth Corey Norman set up a leaping Joel Koina for the Broncos' fifth try in the 63rd minute before throwing the final pass to Gibb three minutes later to race away and score under the posts.
Broncos under-20s coach, Rockhampton's Anthony Griffin, praised his team's performance after the match, admitting their awesome display on a wet night took him a little by surprise.
“It was a really good hit-out for us physically, and we played some really good football,” Griffin said.
“The boys have been busting to play; it's been a big off-season.”
Granville, whose older brother Sam plays for the Mackay Cutters in the Queensland Cup, was equally excited to be playing for the Broncos in front of his home crowd.
The 20-year-old hooker made his Queensland Cup debut for Wynnum in round seven last season in a match he would rather forget after he dislocated and snapped his left ankle.
But he did enough on his return to the field at the end of 2008 to be signed by the Broncos.
“It was good to get out and play. I had mum and dad watching,” he grinned.

Scoreboard

Broncos 34 (Dale Copley, Max Dudley, Joel Koina, Jake Granville, Brendon Gibb, Dunamis Lui tries, Dane Gagai 3, Todd Murphy 2 goals) d Comets 6 (Alan Rothery try, Nat Bowman goal).

Very surprised by the result, I was expecting at best a close lost. That was also without Kurt Baptiste and Kurtis Lingwoodock.
