Hello injury....

Bulldogs recruits Dene Halatau and Corey Payne sidelined through injury
February 26, 2010

Canterbury suffer two injury blows before a ball has even been kicked this NRL season, with new recruits Dene Halatau and Corey Payne sidelined for lengthy periods.

Backrower Payne is likely to require surgery and could be gone for the season after rupturing his left shoulder in last week's trial match against St George Illawarra.

New Zealand international Halatau picked up an ankle problem after being kicked against the Dragons, and is expected to miss the first two months of the competition.

Bulldogs assistant Terry Lamb said it was a terrible shame for both players, who were looking for new opportunities after joining from the Wests Tigers.

"They trained well, put in three or four months of hard training and get put out," Lamb said.

"But they'll be back, that's important for us.

"That's important for the future."

So much for our back-row depth

At least Halatau will come back after a couple of months.

I hope you don't lose any more forwards. There is already a distinct lack of strike power in your forwards already. Good workers but who will bend the line? Only Paea looks promising. May have to look to some juniors as backup. Reminds me a bit of 2008.

I honestly believe we have one of the most solid forward packs in the game, however you are right. We really don't have anyone who will provide the strike power, instead we have a pack who plays a tradition role of smacking the ball up and making the tackles.

Agreed with gsweeper. We have a pack of very hard working, gritty players who do more than get the job done.

I believe Paea can provide a lot of impact, though. He can come on and really make a big impact. So can Halatau when he returns.

I think Barba will get his chance and shine this year. The door has definitely opened for him now that Halatau is out for a while. If he has improved on his defense he will be a regular first grader. Offers so much in attack. Patten Goodwin Morris Idris Turner. Couldn't ask for a better 1 to 5.
Barba on bench as Halatau would have been. Can play centre wing 5/8 & half. Buddy , Paea and Hickey/Armit still makes a good bench. Dogs will still be in the mix.

Barba can be a nice spark of the bench. Even if his defense is still suspect, he won't hurt us too much on that end if he's playing 20-25 mins a game. I just hate having 4 forwards on the bench. Too conservative for my liking.

Yeah the backline looks slick. I'm excited to see how the combination of Idris and Turner can go. Turner will be a significantly better finisher than Hazem was last year (at that stage in his career).

30 years dude, with all due respect, one of Australia's leading frontrowers is part of our forward pack (Hannant). Hodgson is solid, Ryan's a workhorse, Halatau when fit will be a gun, and in 2009 I'm certain Stagg was the highest points-earner on average per game, his workrate is insane.

There are far softer forward packs IMO.

To be fair Timmah I don't think TPY was saying that our pack was soft, more that we lack firepower there. As he said, we have plenty of good workers there but not alot of guys that can break the line and create 2nd phase play. I'm hoping Paea and Halatua (when he returns) can give us a bit of that.

Forgot to mention that Buddy Gordon can fill the centres. This why I put him on the bench also. It is a blessing for a coach to have a player that can play various positions. You cannot have 4 forwards alone on the bench. Only in the mud.

I think we both agree here. Buddy can fill in the centres if injuries occur but he'll be used as an impact forward. Thats why I REALLY want to see Barba on our bench.

He wasn't going to be there anyway. He was a strong player to bring up in case of injury, but still a big loss to our depth.

I guess this meant Warburton is back in the starting side.

I rate that guy. He's just a no-frills type player that doesn't mind a bit of work.
