New Zealand will be the first nation to host the Rugby World Cup tournament twice after being awarded the right to host the 2011 event by the IRB in Dublin on Friday.

New Zealand's bid beat out Japan and South Africa, who were eliminated in the first round of voting, for the right to host the tournament.
"It's a very proud day for us, rugby is very important to us, it's a very proud day to be a Kiwi," NZRU chairman Jock Hobbs said after the announcement.

New Zealand hosted and won the inaugural World Cup tournament in 1987.

Well done to NZ, which are you guys building/upgrading?
I thought Japan should have got it but NZ haven't hosted one in ages.

It will be nearly 30 years since the last time we hosted the cup. Its nice to think the Cup will be coming home :)

what a suicidal move by the IRB, especially with Australia now qualified for the football world cup, and South Africa hosting the 2010 one. Will Rugby still be relevant outside NZ by 2011? Perhaps not with this moronic decision.

It was interesting to note that media and public that the NZ media seemed to be talking to all thought it wouild go Japans way. Even though I am glad that NZ got it, for the interst of the game I think it would have been better to go to Japan.

Wow, what a huge opportunity missed. Japan's Rugby is based on big corporatation support. Global company would have jumped at the chance of being able to cover such a large area of the southern hemisphere and Japanese companies would have jumped at the chance to use the world cup as a springboard to other markets.

I suppose the only concern over Japan would be the adiministration. Alot of faith has to be shown.

I still think it's a big opportunity lost, Japan won't care about the world cup now, the country would most definitely have gotten behind it if it was on their soil though. Could NZ really gain anything from hosting the cup?

A rugby world cup and NZ is just such a natural fit.

They'll probably approach this like we did with the Olympics.

New Zealand would gain heaps mate ! NZ would not only gain the RWC trophy but all its Rugby stadiums around the country would be updated by the goverments .
60,000 RWC visitor's are expecting and NZ's economy will be up the roof .

You should know that any country hosting the RWC will benefit from such big event .
And New Zealand will treat this RWC as their last RWC tournament ever . So it was a wise decision by the IRB because after 2011 the RWC would be too big for New Zealand to host alone .

Lets not forget that Japan would be favourite to host the next RWC 20015 or 2019 .
And by then Japan would be ready with open arms and their nation would be also ready to host the best ever RWC alone .:thumb

I didn't mean NZ as a country, I meant NZ as a Rugby nation. It's not going to get any bigger in NZ.

I doubt Japan will get a run until 2019, South Africa will host the next one.

The RWC is bigger than anything in New Zealand apart from the All Blacks .

Guy and Nalin, wtf are you talking about. If you think that giving a Rugby World Cup to Japan when the overall interest in Rugby is relatively low, and their team stinks, is a good idea, then you are wrong. Sure everyone *might* get behind it (a big if imo), but Japan would still get thrashed, and rugby would almost definitely fade back into oblivion straight after the event. Not only that, but it would surely be the worst RWC ever, getting decent attendances would be a major worry, the general public has no knowledge of rugby, the atmosphere would probably stink, the whole tournament would be disappointing imo.

Nalin, you are crazy if you think that rugby is going to be wiped off the radar in South Africa any time soon. And what are you suggesting anyway? That because South Africa and Australia have good things going on in soccer atm, that the IRB should completely give up on the 2 nations and instead focus all of its attentions on Asia, who currently have 0 competitive rugby nations with 0 foreseeable future prospects of ever having one?

Until there is ANY sign that rugby is expanding beyond it's traditional borders, it makes no sense at all to give it to anyone other than the major nations. You can't just stick a world cup in a country that doesn't even really want it and expect the game to suddenly start thriving there and in all of the neighbouring countries.
