1) Melbourne Storm- Their lesser lights will be rested. The big 3 maybe a year older but they are still 3 of the best 6 players in the world. Cam Smith's decision is the only thing that can de-rail them in my opinion.

2) Sydney Roosters- The WCC is in Aus in 2014, meaning that the roosters can basically treat it as a trial game to some extent. Supremely talented roster. Injuries may be their only concern.

3) Manly Sea Eagles- When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Sure they lose some forward depth again, but have bought smart, and surely cannot have the injuries that they had last year. Or can they. I think they're a rung below the top 2, but only just.

4) South Sydney Rabbitohs- I think they'll start slower than they did last year. Souths 2013 are Melbourne 2006 or St George 2009. It's feasible that they storm home. Can beat all the top 3, and if in position, will be short priced come finals.

5) Penrith Panthers- Really like the look of this side next year. A great blend of youth and experience, coupled with the coach who I think is just as good as Bellamy, Hasler, Maguire. Next year is James Segeyaro's break out I believe. I may also be alone here, but I don't mind the Wallace/Soward pairing at club level. I think their attributes compliment each other, and Gus and Cleary are the kind of blokes who could get both firing again.

6) Canterbury Bulldogs- I think they'll be a happier side next year. I'm not sold on Hoffman being the solution to their problems (I thought that Kevin Locke would have been perfect for them) but still their forwards, together with a few exciting juniors should see them have a solid season. The halfback is a concern.

7) Newcastle Knights- The only thing thing that prevents me from having them higher is that Buderus was so important to them last year. And the wheels really came off when he got hurt in that Prelim. I know that Gidley is a great replacement at 9, and I hear good things about Clydesdale, but can you really replace a champion?

8) Canberra Raiders- Canberra are that team that seem to have a bad year, then a good year, then a bad year, then a good year. They are due a good year this year. Have a surprisingly good roster. The major question is the effect that the Milford situation has on the rest of the team.

Canberra also fall into the 8 by virtue of process of elimination. I don't see the Sharks or Cowboys making the 8 this year, the broncos I still believe are not a top 8 side and nor are the titans. The dragons and tigers are a year away still.

The warriors are the dark horses, and I can never get a line on them, so I don't try but they could be first and they could be last.

Parramatta are sadly no chance, yet again.

According to my random generator:

sharks
panthers
tigers
warriors
eagles
storm
dragons
bulldogs
eels

probably wont be right, but i recon it will end up closer than some and probably closer than if i tried to predict it myself now.

Dismiss the Tigers and Eels outright, see what happens with the ElephantJuiceharks and I reckon you're pretty close there Raider69 ol' boy. ;-)

I like your list and explanations except for bulldogs and raiders, I just don't see how or why you'd think they'd improve, they're clearly gonna be in even worse shape. They've lost their decent players and gained nothing.

Meanwhile you have the eels who have had a facelift and gained one of the best players in the world in Hopoate, who hasn't even started to show what he's got but what he did show with such little experience indicates your best bet is to compare him only to the likes of hayne, slater and inglis.
Add norman to the mix, who I don't rate really but at 6 it's another somewhat dangerous star player, and the prospect of loko getting healthy and playing closer to his potential, and the possibility of sandow snapping out of his bs and playing like he can, and they're actually one of the most stacked squads in the comp.

Rivalled in stackedness only by teams like the titans, who you also inexplicably left out in favour of the empty sad raiders and bulldogs. I'm gonna go ahead and say both titans and eels will definitely finish higher than raiders and bulldogs.

1) Roosters ( roster is just too good, way to good to be under the cap )
2) Soufs ( they will be up for it again, lack fire power out wide but will go one better this year )
3) Manly ( seasoned vets, hard to beat )
4) Knights ( will be more consistent )
5) Storm ( big 3 1 year older and burn out )
6) Penrith ( big movers, club on the rise )
7) Broncos ( by way of a very favorable draw )
8) Dogs ( just scrap in above the Cowboys and Sharks )

1. South Sydney
2. Cronulla
3. Newcastle
4. Manly
5. North Queensland
6. Sydney Roosters
7. Melbourne
8. Penrith/Warriors

Can't really see the top 8 changing too much. Cronulla, Penrith and Newcastle to be the big improvers, while Easts , Storm and Dogs to slide.
Storm and Dogs I agree with. The Roosters could be a team that just doesnt show up and slide big time, but boy they have a great roster. The Titans are my dark horse pick.

I thought the storm were shoe ins but then I read this thread and realised that the big 3 were a year older this year...apparently every other player in the NRL will be a year younger in 2014, hence their slide

Yeah I think next year more than ever I could imagine storm slipping out of the 8. If it wasn't for bellamy they'd be far worse, and it's almost like they're victims of their own success with their deteriorating squad.

Re BunniesMan on the Warriors

He is right that they've never been short of talent
I also agree with him on Matt Elliot - I was glad when he left Easts
I would rate the Warriors far more highly had Ivan Cleary stayed

He is blowing out of his arse when he says Sam Tomkins won't make it in the NRL. I can only say he's never watched him play. The lad is great.

I have never, ever played Rugby League. However I don't think that makes me blind. It's my terrible eyesight that does that.

Oh.... um.

1. Rabbits - the darlings of the nrl will deliver a minor this year
2. Roosters- Strong team well coached hasn't lost much from last year
3. Sharks- Barring ASADA intervention
4. Broncos- Solid team last year just with no attacking spark, Barba may make a huge difference here
5. Titans- Big underachiever for the last few years, have to come good eventually
6. Manly- Great halves combination, always play tough but some players seem to be getting on in the years
7. Knights- No.9 is a big problem but enough talent to carry them through to the finals
8. Warriors- Decent draw this year just need to start the season well for a change.
9. Panthers- Lots of players that can be great, but also can turn in garbage performances. I see some sparks of brilliance throughout the season but ultimately they will fall short
10. Bulldogs- Need a decent halves pairing, can't see them making the finals this year
11. Storm- A tougher pre-origin draw this year will make the post origin slump hurt that much more
12. Cowboys- New coach won't improve things here
13. Dragons- Long rebuilding phase, won't be competitive
14. Raiders- The team is a mess but has some good young talent
15. Tigers- Could very well be a top 8 team if Luke Brooks is as good as they say and the backline finds form
16. Eels- Signed a whole bunch of average players, but still better than what they had

No doubt about it, given all the facts, Souths will finish 11th.
