I knew there was a face missing around Melbourne Park... has anyone noticed Ashleigh Barty isn't there? Apparently, she retired last year after the US Open. I just found this out. Came as quite a shock to me. I'm not sure why she walked away from the game. She's a junior Wimbledon Champion, easily could have been Australias #1 lady after Stosur retires (perhaps even well before then), and she threw it all away. It was at a time when she had her career-high WTA ranking as well.

Not many girls her age are as talented as her, and considering the pay day that tennis brings... I think she should really reconsider this choice! It's not too late.

Yeah, happened just after Wimbledon, so 6 months ago. Actually coaching in Adelaide at the moment. Not that big a shock if you knew her personally, she has been dealing with a lot of things (you can look them up, I won't go into them), she will come back, she is in Melbourne as a hitting partner for a few of the girls, so it will be just 'when' not 'if' she comes back. Officially she didn't retire, she is taking a 'break'.

It's been a bad day so far for the Aussies.

Maria Sharapova was down a game and break in the 3rd set... luckily she maanged to win the next 4 of the next 5 games to take out the match. She is very unpredictable.
