Aaron Woods named as Tigers skipper

Matt Encarnacion
Published: June 2, 2015 - 7:27PM

Wests Tigers prop Aaron Woods will captain the team for the first time when they host Gold Coast at Leichhardt Oval on Friday night.

Woods stands in for club skipper Robbie Farah, who is recovering from a shoulder injury suffered in the State of Origin series-opening loss last week.

The 24-year-old had previously captained the joint venture alongside centre Chris Lawrence last season, but was this week given sole responsibility by coach Jason Taylor.

Leading the famed black-and-gold down the tunnel however, wasn't exactly his childhood dream.

"Actually, I wanted to captain the (Sea) Eagles, to be honest with you," he said on Tuesday.

"But I'll take it at the Tigers. I love the club. This is the best club ever.

"I'd never want to leave. There couldn't be a better job."

Woods grew up in the heart of Leichhardt and said achieving the honour at the historic suburban venue would be even more special.

"It'll be one of the best experiences ever. I used to come up here when I was a kid," he said.

"We love playing at all our home grounds, ANZ and Campbelltown. But to me this is a lot more special.

"I grew up down the road and being a local boy, I'm pretty pumped up."

While Farah remains in doubt for NSW's must-win game in Melbourne on June 17, Woods said his clubmate was working hard to recover in time.

Blues coach Laurie Daley names his team next Tuesday.

"I saw (Robbie) today. He's been doing a lot of treatment around the clock, just to get his body going," Woods said.

"It's one of those injuries - if you can get a lot of movement out of it, you'd be alright.

"But he got out of the sling. He does have a lot of movement in his shoulder at the moment.

"Time will tell."

The Kangaroos representative also weighed into the proposed contract changes announced by the NRL on Tuesday, whereby players will now have a ten-day cooling off period to backflip on contracts signed with other clubs.

The current June 30 deadline will be scrapped.

"It's not a bad rule," Woods said.

"I suppose if you sign a player you've only got to wait ten days. You don't have to wait until June 30.

"If I sign a contract, I'd want to honour it. It's one of them hard things - it's up to the person.

"I suppose all the stuff that's happened with (Daly) Cherry-Evans - I don't know what he's thinking so it's hard to comment - I think it's a good thing for the NRL to do."

An interesting reserves bench.

Cheerington as 18th man but listed as a reserve for NSW Cup, I wonder if they are thinking of a backup option for Halatau and in turn use Halatau in back row as well.

NSW Cup team also has Buchanan in team for Saturday's game.

1. Kurtis Rowe
2. John Sila
3. Nathan Milone
4. Marion Seve
5. Mason Cerruto
6. Penani Manumalealii
7. Josh Drinkwater
8. Jack Buchanan
9. Joel Luani (capt.)
10. Matthew Lodge
11. Lamar Liolevave
12. Wesley Lolo
13. Brenden Santi

Interchange
14. Manaia Cherrington
15. Michael Bullock
16. Andy Fiagatusa
17. Tyler Cassel
18. Salesi Funaki

I would play Cherrington in place of Buchanan I have no doubt Cherrington can handle 1sts & we are better served with Deano playing as back rower while rowdy is in his infancy in that position & having 2 carry the ineffective Siro who is way out of his depth in 1sts.

We lost to them @ leichhardt last yr when bird & miles influenced the diabolical refereeing. We need to win this one but I don't like our chances after the pathetic efforts in our last 3 games.

I think its dangerous having 2 x novices in the 2nd row. Not sure on alternates but I'd like one of the two to be comfortable in the role.

Edit- I imagine Titans are going to have Dave Taylor and their other big forwards running at Moses and Brooks all game. They will need all the help they can get.

Club just publicly admitted (on twitter) they're projecting 5000 people on Friday. Should be a laugh.

If the bludgers cared about the fans they'd play with enthusiasm & apply some elbow grease for 80 mins for only 24 times per year. Its not a bad working life yet they regularly look listless.

I couldn't stop laughing when Bellamy was angry after Mondays loss labelling his team as soft as butter after a rare slack performance.Us tigers fans are regularly subjected to effeminate performances.

They don't deserve 5 fans let alone 5000 this Friday night.

Sironen and Nofoaluma in doubt

I'd move Lawrence to Centre, Halatau to the back row and Cherrington to Hooker

Obviously I'd prefer Lawrence in the back row, but given the situation, it seems like the logical thing to do.

The crowd figures will be shyte. . I for one have lost interest , and against the Titans im even less interested.

At an all time low as for interest in the Tigers this year, as a result can't be bothered making the trek to Leichhardt (much like the team can't be bothered putting in the effort on the field) as I would prefer to just watch at the pub or something.

I will be there. Win win situation - we either turn it around and play well, or we're terrible again and I get to yell at clowns.

With Simona and nofoaluma out, do we have anyone else to bring up?

Lulia, Fine and moltzen are all injured, as shit as they are I'm guessing they would be the next center options. Unless JT puts Lovett there and brings in Lamar to the back row.

You know we're fu?£ed when Moltzen is a logical replacement.

Why so many injuries ? I thought the all new professional staff and gluten free diets were going to prevent all this.
That bye must have been a tough game for these hardened elite athletes.
