Inspired by the Merrin talk, the 2016 Salary cap is

6800K (6.8m)

According to wiki which I believe includes MPAs (can anyone confirm?).

The long Service player allowance is

300k

Making for a total of

7100k (7.1m)

total to play with when considering the "deals worth" numbers that flash in the media.

25 players are required under the cap. 80k is the minimum wage of those 25 contracts. The following players are contracted for 2016, the numbers are from the media or my ass.

1. Merrin
750
2. Soward
600
3. Moylan
500
4. McKendry (all 300 long service)
450
5. Peachey
400
6. Cartwright
400
7. Idris
400
8. Mansour
350
9. Taylor
350
10. Segs
275
11. Whare
275
12. Wallace
200
13. Api
200
14. DWZ
175
15. Blake
150
16. RCG
125
17. Yeo
125
18. Jennings
125
19. Moss
90

I'm going off Zero tackle for contract lengths, and these are all the 2016 signings, I don't know anymore for sure, think Robert J is contracted. The following are possible resignings or at least players of the same sort of position/quality we'd be looking to replace.

20. Jennings
100
21. John
100
22. Simmons
100
23. Latimore
100
24. BMM
100
25. Latu
100

I get a total of
6640k or 6.6mil.

It seems I'm heavily lowballing somewhere. Thoughts? What do people disagree with?

I always thought 25 was just the minimum amount of players you could have under the NRL salary cap and if you chose to you could spread it over more players if you wanted.

Then from however many NRL contracts you have, the top 25 earners make up the top 25 players and the rest fall under the second tier salary cap if the play in the NRL. We always seem to have 25+ players who would be earning the minimum wage for an NRL player atleast.

If you can have say 30 players, the rest could be in more minimum wage contracts. Or we could have room left under the cap.

Isn't that the second tier salary cap for match payments of players outside of the top 25?

I vaguely recall Rob Weaver on PI saying something along the lines of Panthers typically having more then 25 players in the NRL squad and took it to mean he was referring to out NRL salary cap. Could have been misinterpreting that. We just seem to have lots of NRL experienced guys who would surely be on minimum NRL wage atleast in reserve grade.

So that would mean the salary cap applies to all contracted players not in Holden Cup (which have their own separate cap) which would mean 40-50 players?

No because there is a second tier cap. I'll see if I can find how/where that fits in.

Eh I dunno, the first sentence from that NRL cap page
$5.5 million - Basic payments for the Top 25 players including Sponsor Servicing Allowance ($5.3m) which is automatically given to all clubs to compensate players for club sponsorship activities including appearances and endorsements.
Reads pretty definitively that the salary cap (5.5 number there is outdated) is for the top 25 players, not a minimum top 25.

Another line.
The Salary Cap for 2014 is $5.5m for the 25 highest remunerated players at each club. All other players that play NRL in the current year must fit under a $375,000 Salary Cap.

More reading reveals this one, I do think the original post is right and the salary cap is for just the top 25.
In addition to the Top 25 Salary Cap, clubs will have a maximum limit of $250,000 to spend on the 20 highest remunerated players who do not form part of the top 25 salary cap and who qualify for the Holden Cup (turning 20 or less in the current year). All other players who play in the Holden Cup must fit under a 2nd Tier Cap of $50,000.

Add Brown for 300 and Mose for 300 and youre at the cap. Id drop Merrin to about 675 and up Soward to about the same. That doesn't take into account 3rd parties though.

I think we'll have the space to fit Mose and Brown in. I think our cap for next year will be fine, itll just be the following years when your Blake, Jennings etc need top ups that we start having to make hard decisions. Hopefully by then its a matter of letting go a Mansour due to cap constraints to be replaced by a Jennings type.

I think the 750k on Merrin is about accurate, Soward maybe on a bit more, but that I've over done PEach and Cartwright. If Peach and Cartwright were on that I'd expect there would have been headlines about their $1m dollar deal which is what they would have been over the term of their contracts, but maybe we successfully kept the numbers out of the media.

Anyway, the idea is to try and get a perspective on Merrin's contract.

better way of doing work out what players would be on now. Peachey would be more now then last time he signed. Brown has said he wants more, Docker will get more

This is our 25man squad for this year. Anderson, Brown, Cartwright, Docker, Idris, John, Kite, Koroisau, Latimore, Mansour, Manu, McKendry, Moylan, BMM, Peachey, Plum, Seg, Simmons, W.Smith, Soward, Taylor, Wallace, DWZ, Whare, Yeo.

Aside from Manu the rest of the off contract will be on close to minimum wage now. Simmons, Plum, Kite included ($100k). So regardless of who comes in we have to lose players.

He said in an article he wants double his current deal I assumed we signed him for cheap. Either way will be on more. John, Smith etc will be straight squad swaps for Blake, Jennings etc.

$272k per player is the average. I'd say we have 10 on over that. None are leaving meaning we have less to fill the rest of the squad with.

Merrin for starters will be on the cap for atleast double that even after third party.
