It was mixed weekend for St George Illawarra players during the first week of the finals of the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.

Dragons back-rower Tyson Frizell came off the interchange for Australia in their 46-0 smashing of Samoa in Darwin.

Unfortunately Frizell's gain came at the expense of Samoan duo Tim Lafai and Leeson Ah Mau's pain – the two will now have a few weeks off before reporting to pre-season training.

The dream run for Under-20s Dragons and Fijian utility Joe Lovodua continued after the Bati produced the biggest upset of the tournament so far by eliminating New Zealand in Wellington.

The try-less thriller also spelled the end of the Kiwi international Jason Nightingale's tournament, who like Lafai and Ah Mau before him, will return to Dragons training in the coming weeks.

Nene Macdonald's tournament also came to an end following Papua New Guinea's 36-6 defeat at the hands of England in Melbourne.

England and Dragons duo Gareth Widdop and James Graham's tournament will continue next week in Auckland as they come up against Tonga.

Speaking of, Tonga was also able to progress to the semi-finals following their thrilling win over a brave Lebanon Cedars outfit in Christchurch.

Dragons Ambassador Kezie Apps also played a crucial role in the Jillaroos' 38-0 win over England in the Women's Rugby League World Cup.

Apps scored a try in the eight-try shutout victory which confirmed their place in the finals. Fellow Dragons Ambassador Sam Bremner is yet to feature for the Jillaroos this tournament as she works her way through several niggling injuries.

2017 Rugby League World Cup Results:

Australia 46 (Valentine Holmes 5, Michael Morgan 2, Billy Slater tries; Cameron Smith 7 goals) defeated Samoa 0 at Darwin Stadium. Half-time: Australia 30-0.

Tonga 24 (David Fusitu'a 2, Tuimoala Lolohea, Will Hopoate tries; Ata Hingano 4 goals) defeated Lebanon 22 (Abbas Miski 2, Adam Doueihi, James Elias; Mitch Moses 3 goals) at Christchurch Stadium. Half-time: Tonga 22-16

Fiji 4 (Apisai Koroisau, Taane Milne goals) defeated New Zealand 2 (Shaun Johnson goal) at Wellington Regional Stadium. Half-time: Fiji 2-0.

Jillaroos 38 (Meg Ward 2, Isabelle Kelly, Nakia Davis-Welsh, Chelsea Baker, Elianna Walton, Kezie Apps, Caitlin Moran tries; Chelsea Baker 2, Caitlin Moran goals) defeated England 0 at Southern Cross Group Stadium. Half-time: Jillaroos 24-0.

England 36 (Jermaine McGillvary 2, Kallum Watkins 2, Alex Walmsley, Ben Currie, Ryan Hall tries; Gareth Widdop 4 goals) defeated Papua New Guinea 6 (Garry Lo try; Rhyse Martin goal) at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium. Half-time: England 14-0.

MacDonald and Lafai's continued to display a form slump that was on show in our end of season collapse. Milne is one example of a very good strong defensive centre that runs hard and has a good off load that should have been used more.

Four of St George Illawarra's five remaining 2017 Rugby League World Cup representatives will feature in this weekend's semi-finals.

Dragons back-rower Tyson Frizell has retained his spot on the Kangaroos' bench ahead of their huge clash against Fiji at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium.

Friday night's showdown will also prove to be the biggest game of Dragons Under-20s utility Joe Lovodua's career after he was named on the bench for the Bati.

England will play in the other semi-final against competition fan-favourites Tonga at Auckland's Mt Smart Stadium.

Dragons skipper Gareth Widdop and recruit James Graham have retained their place in coach Wayne Bennett's side at fullback and prop respectively.

Dragons Ambassador Kezie Apps will also start from the bench in the Jillaroos' final pool game against Canada on Wednesday afternoon at Southern Cross Group Stadium.

I've seen a stack of Tongan flags flying from cars around the St Goerge area this week. Great stuff. Really looking forward to that semi final on saturday. I can't pick a winner

Anyone who hasn't enjoyed this World Cup hasn't watched.

There has been so much to like. Tonga and Fiji are the obvious ones, but Ireland and Lebanon both played some great footy.

Really looking forward to the tonga England game. I honestly think tonga can win. If they show up with the sort of attitude they brought against NZ we could easily see them in the final.

Who knows? A Hayne inspired performance from Fiji and a few good bounces of the ball, and we could see a tonga Fiji final. Fijis forwards were fantastic last week. If their backs can get it together it will be game on.

f**k the haters. Best World Cup ever.

Pretty much the opposite sadly: Hayne was deadset their worst player in the first half and the contest was over

Definitely agree it has been a fabulous tournament though!

Wow where did Duges learn to catch and pass so quickly
Doing it easily and making Holmes a great winger
Funny how so many at our club don’t catch and pass maybe Aitken can as well?
Any chance justt a difference in game plan and coaching styles?

Yep. Shame. I knew I was going out on a limb with that one. Ha.

Hopefully tonga England lives up to the hype. If it's still close at the 55/60 minute mark when taumololo comes back on he can almost carry his team home alone. Been a long time since a forward had such a dominant impact on a year of footy.

They can bash the crap out of them as far as I am concerned , just as long as they leave Widdop and Graham alone .

Like with any WC you just have to be picky with which games you watch if you want to be entertained.
I don't get much out of watching the Aussies thrash everyone so I avoid those games.
I'll watch England vs Tonga tonight though, hoping for a Tongan victory!

England should be too professional and if any chance to beat us need to win by 24 plus
Tonga to be congratulated for where they’ve got to but not together long enough and s few pro players short IMO

Australia will beat either England or Tonga by 30+ unfortunately. Its a forgone conclusion.
I watched England last week and they were terrible. They wouldn't beat any of the top 8 nrl teams. They are about the quality of Souths.
Tonga have been the story of the WC and great to watch. But I fear they might be finished today.
England vs Aussies GF with a scoreline of 42-6.

Also enjoyed the world cup as well.
I'm looking forward to the poms v tonga.
I think this could be a cracker.
Both have a good pack of forwards.
The poms might get them out wide but any rate go tonga.
