We will find out next month when the NRL releases its 2018 Annual Report what actual $ value the Media deal is worth. Figures quoted at the time were $1.8billion over 5 years ($360mill a year) *. There was no reporting on how much of that was contra. On top of that are the international and digital rights sold.

In 2017 revenue from media was $206.1 mill*. Be interesting to see what the increase for 2018 revenue from media was.

According to reports at the time, value of deal is:
Ch9 paid $50mill each per year for its 3 games a week ($150mill a year or $750mill for 5 years) (plus value of Origin and Internationals in that final figure)
Fox paid $28.75mill each per year for its 8 games a week ($195mill a year (+$35mill to ch9) or $975mill (+$175mill to Ch9) for 5 years)
Telstra around $75mill (includes ?$50mill in competition naming rights)

Telstra and Fox got a very good deal imo

Don't worry about channel 10, next time round we will have options like:

FTA (9, 10, 7)
Pay TV (Foxtel, Optus Sports)
Streaming (Amazon, Google, Apple, God knows who else will be competing in this space in 2022... Facebook, Netflix, Telstra, new players....).

We could create four packages that could be bid for:
  • Premium NRL Package (Thursday Night, Friday Night and Sunday Afternoon) Ideal for FTA
  • Six-game NRL Package (including the Saturday triple header and a Sunday triple header)
  • The Events Package: State Of Origin, Kangaroos home tests, Any internationals played in Australia (other than RLIF tournaments), NRL 9's, Indigenous All-Stars

Also the value of the NZ deal would be interesting.

Yes, it was interesting for the first time they didn't announce its $ value. Not knowing contra value of main deal it will be hard to work out what value the NZ deal was just on overall media revenue figure.

Think it may be the same or worse still less than the prior one.The TV Ratings have hardly been over the moon there.

Honestly, NRl should get itself off PayTV in NZ and focus on expusure on the Fta stations.

JUst imagine how quickly RL would turn into a niche sport if we locked it away entirely on Pay.

I really think nZ is our best short term prospect for growth. We should really be hitting hard with big events and easy access tv

Worth noting the figures quoted in media are just that - figures. If the NRL publishes something vastly different, chances are it's the journos who f**ked up their reporting in 2015.

Journo f**cking up, now that's a novelty.

I'd love to find out because the NRL can go toe-to-toe with the AFL on ratings, it doesn't need SOO to drive its value so we should be looking to separate it.

I dont think that could work unless Origin became totally stand-alone.

Id hate to see the shitfight if one network is losing players to the other

The broadcaster has nothing to do with signing players. The NRL control the NRL comp and SOO. It will simply be sold as separate packages. Besides, there is nothing stopping a network bidding for both packages and winning them, as long as they are the highest bidder for both individually.

Should have been done about two deals ago. One of the key failings as commented on then.

It actually really drives your point home when you realise that the NRL is at the very worst the equivelant of AFL in terms of FTA ratings, plus the key driver of Foxtel subscriptions plus we have Origin on top of all of that as a bonus.

Why are we not the highest paid sport in Australia again? Key failings for sure....

They have more content to sell and more advertising space, and have a much greater profile in metro ratings areas which still seems to be a driver for financial worth. On the flip side we have bigger ratings per game, SOO as 3 top of the countries rating events, more fox subscribers and stand alone kick off times and more TV friendly time slots. We should at the very least be on par, not $75mill plus a year lower!
