Just flicked the afl on, now that’s a crowd! I guess there was no excuses for afl fans lol

Yes. And with nine clubs(won't include Geelong just for u PR) in a city of 4 million plus. Wonderful what local rivalries, access to the whole scholastic system and blanket media and press coverage can do!

And we are done, kids have gone to the other room to watch the AFL. In the words of my 12yo, “there’s nobody there Dad, this is boring.” That’s your next generation right there!!
you are from WA so why are you surprised you kids follow fumbleball?

they aren't the next generation at all and never were

Yeah nah I don’t really buy that

AFL opener is always on a Thursday night, roughly around the same date every year. They probably would’ve had inside knowledge also

Exactly. Completely predictable. Tweet these idiots and point out how stupid this was

As I said previously this makes a mockery of the NRL. We bitch and moan that no one can attend matches on a Thursday night, it's too awful of a timeslot. Along come the AFL and they get 90K or so to a Thursday night match.

Of course their sport is totally not comparable. Same time of year. Same timeslot. Same day of the week. Same cities. Same amount of teams competing for fans (Melbourne is even more crowded than Sydney for teams). Their our direct rival competing with us for the same fans.

We should be looking at what they've done right and continue to do right. I'm sure everyone will say it's a shit sport and I agree but that's even more reason to look at what they're doing. They've managed to be so successful in spite of the game itself.

the NRL draw was out way before the flogball one was

I'm sure the NRL had a fair idea when the AFL season was starting and there was a high chance they would be up against a match like this.

The AFL have opened their season on the Thursday night of our round 3 with the same game at the same ground with the same teams playing for years. There is no way the NRL didn’t know the AFL season dates. There is zero surprise.

If we announced we were holding our grand final at 3pm at AAMI Park on the last Saturday in September, we can’t claim that we didn’t know the AFL GF would be on, even if we publically release our draw first. It’s beyond stupid

i seem to recall the two Sydney teams opened their season some time

edit: also just looked at a few other years and it was different teams in 2014, 2013, 2012, 2007, 2006, 2005 and i could go on forever

the AFL have also only started their season earlier for about two years so you're story aint true

That was because of the comm games earlier that year. Otherwise you have to go back to 1990 when it wasn’t the last Saturday in September. Not rocket science but clearly not many brain cells in the scheduling department. As I said even if there is doubt you don’t put Melbourne’s Thursday night game at this time, save it for when they are most likely a stand alone game to maximise attendance. Not hard.
