Because the club didn't want to bear the cost when they have a major event in a week's time and they're headed to Brisbane the week after? Perhaps Wednesday suited them and they figured the outlay ($70k from memory) was not worth the negligible crowd that would show up. And before you say "hold it on the weekend" I'm fairly sure Newcastle couldn't.
I'd say there have been hundreds over the years we either aren't aware of or have faded from memory.
