After the game,listen to this.

It will give you an idea on why teams have no choice but to let go of good players.

They had a choice and they chose Coote.

Remains to be seen whether Ponga would have wanted to stay up there (he probably saw the writing on the wall with Thurston coming to the end) but the Cowboys had a choice.

As for the game, Knights made too many errors in the first half when they had the breeze where Souths controlled the ball. That, goal kicking and f**king Sio was the difference. Scoreline flattered Souths but we still play like a young side. I can see improvement though. Our good and bad is getting closer together.

The cowboys had a choice. They chose wrong, and it will haunt them for years
Because they didn't want to match Newcastle's offer? Other clubs are forced to make cruicle desicions that they rue for years. That is the nature of the salary cap. Makes it a playing field. If anything, signing Taumalolo for $10 mill is now the factor that is now setting in.

I'm sorry but this kid is a franchise player, will be the best player in the game in the next two years.

Knights were laughed at for paying this kid the money they did, will be proven to be a signing that could win them a comp in the next 4 years.
He needs better cattle around him. Could be as influential for the knights as Joey was, but he needs a better supporting cast

Ponga has it all, at the start I thought he was just another exciting back with dynamic footwork but he really has it all, in only his first full year of first grade too

Very promising signs for the Knights. Simply poor goal kicking and Sio's mistake was the difference. Knights will do well to take a lot from this game.

No they wanted to keep Coote and Lowball Ponga just thinking the kid would be loyal and happy to wait. He was too good to wait for Green to give him a decent crack. Those 9 rounds have proven that they underestimated how good the kid really is.

Yeah mate but if he keeps showing this sort of form people will be happy to come to the club just to play alongside him. Just remember where you have come from, it's not easy getting out of the basement trust me as an Eels fan i know how hard it is. Brown is doing it the right way and it will pay off down the track.

I don’t think the core of the side is that bad. Missing Pearce and need some props but that’s been obvious and Brown is trying to fix it. I was really impressed with Watson tonight, his running game is really dangerous. I was devastated the way we missed out on Bird and ended up with Watson as the consolation prize but I don’t think we’ve lost out and saved a fair bit of money. Ramien is a star too so he’ll spark the backline a bit too.

Well played Souths. Almost the perfect game and clearly the better side.

As a Knights fan I dont think the scoreline flattered Souths. They dominated the middle, posession, general play and the scoreboard.

Realistically, we counter punched extremely well but were outgunned in the basics.

Good game to watch and injury permitting better times ahead for both teams...

Two things you notice about the greats in the game-

1. They seem to have all the time in the world.
2. Everyone knows what they do. They've studied up on the pet plays and know what to expect and yet no matter how well you prepare for them, you still just can't stop them.

Ponga has both of these traits and I think that barring injury, he looks every bit a superstar for many years to come.

You could see that Souths had studied up on him. They kicked away from him all night and moved up quickly in defense to limit his time with ball. Every time he got the ball, it was red alert and Souths did their utmost to contain him and yet they still couldn't. This despite the fact that quite a few of the players around him offered limited threat.

The Cowboys must be absolutely kicking themselves because if it were me running that side, based on what I've seen of Ponga, I'd have even moved on Thurston to keep him up there.

They've had Thurstons X factor for years and they literally could have moved him on and replaced him with the similar X factor in Ponga and been set up for another 10 years.

The cows will be kicking themselves for many years to come.

I think I’ll have to defend the Cowboys a bit here. While I also think they’re absolutely bonkers for sacrificing Ponga to keep Coote when it was obvious to everyone that Ponga was a talent, he has improved significantly this year and obviously if the Cowboys had have seen what he is producing now they would have tried harder to keep him.

I heard Ponga interviewed at the start of the season and he said that Brown and Mick Potter changed the way he usually played a bit and wanted him to be more of a ball player and he hadn’t realised he had those type of skills - so I guess if Ponga hadn’t realised it then the Cowboys might not have either...because it’s those players with the vision and the genuine ball playing ability that you move on anyone else to keep because they’re f**king rare.
