Brilliant Burton inspires NSW to emphatic victory
A commanding performance from CABE NSW Under 20s five-eighth Matt Burton has inspired an emphatic 36-10 victory over Queensland at ANZ Stadium on Wednesday.
Burton crossed for two first-half tries before having a hand in two more to help deliver a relentless performance for NSW in a complete 80-minute performance.
The opening exchanges were fiercely fought but NSW's brutal defensive efforts paved the way for a dominant second-half display.
A penalty gifted NSW a golden chance to make their mark and it was Matt Burton who opened the scoring – bursting through on the last tackle to take a 4-0 lead after just eight minutes of play.
NSW were off and running but a fighting Queensland came back to level the scores with a try to fullback Ronaldo Mulitalo just 10 minutes later.
With three penalties to NSW within the first half-hour, they eventually capitalised when Burton broke through for his second try of the contest with a powerful effort from close-range.
The dynamic five-eighth ensured 10-4 advantage after the ensuing conversion fromPenrith teammate, and NSW centre, Stephen Crichton.
With just three minutes remaining in the first-half, the NRL experience of Sam Verrills proved telling with a pinpoint kick for Teig WIlton who followed with a determined chase to extend NSW's lead to 10 at the break.
A penalty to NSW ten minutes into the second half gave the home-side a further two-point to give them a handy 14-point buffer.
It was Burton who was back again to gift an inside pass to Newcastle boy Matt Croker who drifted through some flimsy Queensland defence to set a rather unassailable 24-6 lead.
The floodgates opened as Rabbitoh Ky Rodwell hopped over the try-line and earned himself a four-pointer with just 15 minutes remaining all before Ethan Parry got his name on the scoresheet to put the icing on the cake.
A late try to Murray Taulagi would prove only as a consolation as NSW prevailed with an electric win at home.
