I understand the concept, but I don't actually see how Parra was disadvantaged there.

Because the outside players shouldn’t have to think about dealing with the bloke coming around the back.
If the outside defender sees a player running that short line, they know that a player can’t come from inside that player. The defender leaves the short runner for the inside men and marks up on the outside man.
