I never understand why people always think just because they were good players automatically means they will make great coaches. Pay was a pretty good player but his coaching is shithouse.

He was a decent lower grades coach.

Of course that doesn't automatically translate (case in point Garth Brennan) but it's not like he was picked without any pedigree at all.
