The wait is finally over for Mudgee rugby league fans with the date of the 2020 Charity Shield revealed as Saturday, February 29.

Mayor of the Mid-Western Region Des Kennedy was joined by South Sydney Rabbitohs CEO Blake Solly and St George Illawarra Dragons CEO Brian Johnston for Wednesday's announcement at Mudgee's Glen Willow Stadium.

It will be the third time the Mudgee stadium has played host to the annual pre-season game as part of a four-year partnership between Mid-Western Regional Council, the Rabbitohs and the Dragons.

The 2018 and 2019 games broke attendance records at the venue with more than 9,000 spectators attending.

Mayor of the Mid-Western Region Des Kennedy said he was excited to welcome the clubs back to the region.

"It is always a pleasure to welcome back the Rabbitohs and Dragons who engage with our community each game with visits to schools, nursing homes and sporting clubs.

"This shared partnership is a major benefit to our region, both from a social and recreational standpoint as well as economically, and only further demonstrates that Glen Willow is the best stadium in regional NSW.

"It looks to be a bumper weekend, with visitors to the region encouraged to experience an authentic country show in Gulgong and exciting race meet in Mudgee in addition to experiencing all the footy action up close and personal at the Glen Willow Stadium."

Dragons CEO Johnston said the club is looking forward to returning to Mudgee in 2020.

"We are all delighted to be returning to Mudgee for our third-straight season to play what is an important game on our annual calendar," Mr Johnston said.

"Not only is the Charity Shield played for a number of good causes; it's also proven to be an enjoyable spectacle for the Central West locals and the ideal preparation for both combatants over the past 37 years.

"We have thoroughly enjoyed engaging with local communities throughout the Central West in past years, and this will be no different when the Dragons return to the area in February."

Rabbitohs CEO Solly is delighted to be returning to Mudgee for the 37th Charity Shield.

"Everyone at the Rabbitohs is excited about returning to Glen Willow Stadium for the Charity Shield next year," Mr Solly said.

"The town has embraced our club over the past two seasons. We also feel our club and Souths Cares have embraced the town by playing top quality football and working in the community through Souths Cares' programs.

“It’s important for our club, and the sport in general, to support the people that support us. The people of Mudgee and its surrounding areas in Central West NSW have shown time and again that rugby league is in their veins, and they are prepared to come out and support not only our team, but also our nominated charity in Souths Cares.

"It's a great way for us to put the final touches to our pre-season preparations as we work towards our round one fixture against the Sharks. I know the players have always said the Charity Shield is the closest pre-season game in terms of intensity to that which they experience in the NRL proper, and the coaching staff also see the Charity Shield as a fair-dinkum audition for Round 1. We can't wait for kick-off!"

Dragons and Rabbitohs member pre-sale opens 11am, Wednesday, October 30 with tickets released to the general public on Friday, November 1 at 11am.

Tickets will be available from www.123tix.com.au. Dragons and Rabbitohs club member entitlements apply. Refer to your membership information for more details.

The St George Illawarra Dragons have been deeply saddened by the bushfires that have impacted Australia in recent weeks.

With the south coast of New South Wales heavily affected by these devastating events, the Dragons have announced a number of events planned to bring both relief and funds to several communities in need within the club's catchment area.

The Dragons will head to the Shoalhaven region, Batemans Bay, Narooma, Moruya and surrounding areas on Tuesday, January 28 and Wednesday, January 29 to conduct a family fun day and several community activations. Details for these activities will be communicated in due course.

A number of Dragons representatives will also be in attendance at Moruya's touch football bushfire relief exhibition on Monday, January 27.

The Dragons have also joined forces with the Illawarra Hawks and Wollongong Wolves for a first of its kind Illawarra combined codes bushfire appeal golf day, scheduled for Monday, February 3.

The Dragons, in collaboration with the NRL's Bushfire Appeal Round, are also aiming to raise funds for the Salvation Army Disaster Relief Appeal at their Round 1 clash against Wests Tigers on Sunday, March 15.

Both of the Dragons' premier partners WIN Corporation and St George Leagues Club have committed their support to all of the club's bushfire response initiatives.

"The past few weeks have been distressing for many families across Australia and our heart goes out to everyone who have been impacted by the bushfires," Dragons CEO Brian Johnston said.

"We hope that these initiatives will in some way bring relief to those who have suffered through these harrowing times as well as help provide much-needed funds."

The Dragons are also currently investigating community relief avenues in the Central West of New South Wales ahead of the club's annual Charity Shield clash against the South Sydney Rabbitohs at Mudgee's Glen Willow Stadium on Saturday, February 29.

Charity Shield to host 'Captain's Challenge' trial

The Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) held its first meeting for 2020 in Sydney today and has agreed on two key outcomes:

  • It has accepted advice from the Australian Rugby League Indigenous Council (ARLIC) not to play the national anthem at the All Stars match on the Gold Coast.
  • It has provisionally endorsed a new "Captain's Challenge" system to be implemented for the 2020 Telstra Premiership.
National Anthem
The Commission has agreed the All Stars match is an event unique to Indigenous Australians and the wishes of our players should be respected.

This decision was made after extensive consultation with senior members of our indigenous playing groups and members of ARLIC. This year's All Stars match on February 22 on the Gold Coast marks the 10-year anniversary of the event devised by former player Preston Campbell to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.

ALRC Chairman Peter V'landys said it was an important role of the Commission to listen and consult with all players on issues that impact both the game and individuals.

"The All Stars game was created as a celebration of Indigenous players and their culture," Mr V'landys said.

"We have listened to our players' concerns that the words of the anthem do not represent them or their families and does not include an acknowledgement of First Nations people. We respect their wishes and have agreed that the anthem will not be played at the All Stars match on February 22."

Captain's Challenge
The Commission was also updated on proposed rule changes for the 2020 Telstra Premiership season designed to bring further innovation and excitement to the game.

A new "Captain's Challenge" system was provisionally endorsed by the Commission and will now progress to discussions with clubs, players and broadcast partners before a final decision on implementation in the 2020 Telstra Premiership. The NRL will trial the Captain's Challenge rule change at the All Stars game on February 22 and the Charity Shield game in Mudgee between the South Sydney Rabbitohs and the St George Illawarra Dragons on February 29.

Under the proposed new rule, the captain will be the only player allowed to challenge a decision. Each club will have to nominate a second player to take on the responsibility should the captain leave the field.

The only decisions that can be challenged are ones which involve a structured restart of play (e.g. penalty, scrum, drop-out). Challenges will not be permitted where the referee allows play to proceed.

Sides will be permitted one unsuccessful challenge per game.

A final report and recommendations from NRL management will be presented at the next Commission meeting to determine the implementation.
