Technically if you look at the list of events every NRL match is on the Anti Siphoning list, I guess they get around it by the games are offered to ch9 but they only purchase 3. Below are the Rugby League events covered under anti siphoning laws.

We did when digital first started, ch 10 ran the channel 'one' which was a sport focussed channel that had NFL and a heap of motor sport. It didn't really have any major sports so eventually changed to something else.

In regards to the anti siphoning list I am unsure exactly why they have every NRL game on there as it is actually in the sports and the publics best interests to have some games on Paytv. I'm guessing it is written that way to ensure that the free to air broadcaster an get access to as many games as they are willing to pay for.

Ah yeah I do remember that - it was still just a "secondary" channel to 10 though

I was thinking a standalone HD broadcaster, im sure if they managed to get a couple of afl and nrl games, along with the other top tier sports, it would be a success?
The hardest thing would be getting it started and getting those deals through, so I get why it hasn't happened

There are no players "skipping it" at all. Only players "skipping it" are those who were ruled out due to injury. If you look at the injury lists for eligible NSW and Qld players, you'll find a lot of the nominal starters on them.

Also, if we decide that three origins in a row is too much, make it a four week window with 10 or so days between games. Run Oceania Cups alongside the Origin matches for TV content and pause the NRL to preserve the integrity of the comp and build anticipation for its return. Any concerns about giving a 'free-kick' to AFL are nonsense as Origin time basically gives blanket media coverage to RL and even gets the game headlines in non-RL states (especially when they are hosting a match).

Far too sensible! I quite liked the 20 round season this year, a reduction in rounds wouldn't be a bad thing for player fatigue and performance or fan interest. Get a ninth game up and running to cover the drop in TV time. Then stand alone weekends mid season for Origin and Internationals. Maybe players playing less games we could pay them less for club games and reduce the salary cap as well making clubs more viable? Bigger payments for Internationals and Origin (which makes the NRL sht loads of money) could be given to help retain the star players.
