NSWRL having no published draw for this Challenge Cup, plus having teams pull out and in, to me makes it look like a shambles of a cup. Shame, as the concept sounds great. Would love to see an end of year knockout with the various CRL Group winners, Shield winners and RMC winners battling it out.

NSWRL having no published draw for this Challenge Cup, plus having teams pull out and in, to me makes it look like a shambles of a cup. Shame, as the concept sounds great. Would love to see an end of year knockout with the various CRL Group winners, Shield winners and RMC winners battling it out.

It is going much better this year than previously. In the first year 4 of the teams in the bottom half of RMC were nominated by NSWRL to play against the top 2 from Newcastle and the top 2 of Illawarra. Only GB survived their first game.

In the 2nd year there was both an RMC 3 round robin (Cabra didn't play) and the same in Illawarra. Then when it went to the second stage, St Marys, Mounties and Wenty all dropped out as did the top 2 Illawarra teams. Guildford lost all 3 games but beat the substitute (3rd) Illawarra team and then GB. Dubbo were added to the comp and won.

Last year Mounties wasn't part of it and St Marys were disqualified because they didn't comply with the rules, so a consistent lack of commitment from these 2 clubs.

As for group winners, that is how it works - Grand Finalists in all comps are allowed to enter but outside Newcastle (if they enter their first grade), only the top Illawarra teams would compete with RMC teams and they are not interested.

So this year is going better than usual and 6 teams will have another organised cup trial this week or 7 teams if Wyong becomes a RMC club next year.

You are spot on as regards lack of publicity by NSWRL but that is always the case.
