A combination of paying some too much, eg knight, and trying to keep the core players together, cam koala campbell etc
Also as penrith are now learning when a team wins eg top 3 players all want more and cap space goes, as BBand B said we had 10 players and 2m to spread and it dosent work, also as ive said before our nsw cup team was garbage running last which is another reason depth was let go
Jed Cartwright is on 350k a year too. Waste of money.

Th
I do not reckon we have enough left for a good signing of say someone on 500-600k. I reckon there is enough left for a reasonable solid signing then probs 2 more close to minimum wage players.

Murray, Keaon, Cody Campbell etc.... would all be getting upgrades too as well as Mark
They don’t just hand out upgrades at the end of every year… upgrades usually only happen when a contract is due to be extended

I reckon there might be around 700k or so left 800k tops.
Let's do some numbers.

Reyno, Gagai, Su'a, Burns=$2.1m.

Mago, Josh Cook, Gardner, Marsters, Moga, Dargan= $600k

That's $2.7m

Subtract:
Chee Kam, Havili=300k???
Nicholls an extra $100k???

That leaves $2.3m

OK now you guys add or subtract to that.

I think Chee Kam cost us more than 150k mate especially if Jed is on 350k.

Chee Kam and HavilI combined would chew up 400k.

We have Milford coming too for around 300-350k.

We would have guys whose current contracts go up too eg Cam Murray who will be coming into his prime soon.

Southy i dont think the numbers add up, reyno was offered 700, gags 400, sua was on 350, thats 1.450 dont forget all the resignings cam, koala, campbell etc before, then about 120 iz min wage so we lost 6 depth players we saved around 750 then we signed our 5 juniors and spent 700 cheekam lucky to get a deal would be on 150,milf 250 havili if anounced 150, all up 550 there,id say we upgraded goat 100 and maybe AJ 50 id say there is about 700 left

Arrow’s deal and Latrell’s upgrade would have hit the bottom line.

However I don’t believe it is as tight as some believe.
And Murray's upgrade

And Keon got an upgrade from his first contract, and can probably expect more after this contract expires

And Graham's extension probably would have had an increase in $$$, don't know how much.

And if we are keeping Cody, that's gonna require a significant upgrade to fend of the new franchise

Only some but my guess is Knight is taking a fair whack
Knight was said to have knocked back a 500K per year deal with Para to stay at Souths when he signed the 4 year deal. He didn't make the list of top 150 players published by FOX which cut out at around 450K but I reckon he is not that far off of that figure

From six months ago, at the height of the Reyno saga:

"The South Sydney Rabbitohs will be left with just $2 million to spend on 16 players in 2023 should they fold and extend halfback Adam Reynolds’ contract beyond next season."

"The Herald can reveal the Rabbitohs have more contracted players for 2023 and beyond than any other team in the NRL, a dilemma that would leave the club with an average of just $125,000 to spend on each of the 16 players if they gave Reynolds the two-year extension he desires."

"South Sydney already have 12 players contracted for the 2023 season, the most of any club in the NRL, taking up about $5.5 million in the salary cap."

"There is little doubt Cody Walker will be offered an extension beyond 2022, which will take the tally to about $6.3 million."

"Latrell Mitchell, Cameron Murray, Jai Arrow, Campbell Graham, Damien Cook, Thomas Burgess, Tevita Tatola, Liam Knight, Hame Sele, Keaon Koloamatangi, Jacob Host and Jed Cartwright are the 12 Rabbitohs players contracted until the end of 2023."

that'd be the ball park figure, and factor in a Cody increase from 650 to at least 900 if he's gonna knock back the new franchise - they will be throwing a million at him for sure.

Don’t believe everything you read in the media. There are a lot of blurred figures stated in that article…. A lot of players were/are already under contract therefore it’s fair to assume their $$$ are already factored into the cap already. Players do not automatically get an upgrade every year… if they are signed on already for a certain term and $$$ the club is not required to upgrade them

I think about $1m left.

Cody will get a good upgrade, Milf has a ??? as to whether he will play due to the court case.

That's exactly the case, was it the media that started all this upgrade talk?

These figures have already factored in the upgrades to everyone that got them, except AJ and the GOAT because they only just happened.

The other thing,

The figures in the SMH article (which have been repeated in other articles and discussions in other media outlets) are for 2023. To sign someone good or really good now to start in 2022 means you need to have space for them in 2023, because good players are not going to sign a 1 year only deal.

And what keeps getting forgotten is that the salary cap was reduced for 2021 and 2022 by 6% (approx 500K) because of COVID.

But many of the contracts had already been signed before the reduction, so that means a club has less spare change and space than they though they would have had at the end of 2019 and beginning of 2020 when a lot of these contracts had been negotiated. Yes the players had to take a pay cut to balance that out but this is still disruptive to signing players because the club is planning ahead 3-4 years, not just thinking about the following year.

Minimum wage players don't count towards cap space because their spot on the roster needs to be filled by someone else who'll earn at least minimum wage.

5 players earning minimum wage doesn't free up $500-600k that can be put towards Cody, it only frees up 5 roster spots for new players to come into the squad.

The salary cap might be $10M for 2022 but a minimum wage of $120k for 30 roster spots means that there is only approx $6.4M of cap space available for contract negotiations.
