These are great figures for the NRL, and on the raw numbers its real hard to see why 25 million more viewers doesnt deliver better results at the broadcasting negotiations. 206m viewing hours up against the AFLs 287m viewing hours could play a part.

Glad you admit it. As I said, our negotiations were handled incompetently and yours were handled well

Perth Red is oddly quiet in this thread. Oh wait Rugby League is hammering his beloved AFL in the ratings.

I think you are trying to be too clever here. Subscriptions do though.

League’s ratings are a lot higher on Pay meaning the subscription penetration is a lot higher. Somebody with any sort of brain or negotiation skills would easily put that out if they lose NRL content will they gain the amount of fumbleball subscriptions to make up that loss.
Treat fumble ball fans as like the borg in Star Trek

So with the dolphins and New Zealand the nrl is looking at a gap of around 40 million viewers each year over its closest rival

with team 18 it will go close to 50 million

that’s excellent

Noting the AFL preason and early year womens comp arent included. Still probably 25-27m difference.

However, does a 25% increase in viewers do more for a broadcaster than 40% more time engaged with the product? It certainly would on FTA.

I'd say yes

If people turn off after halftime does it matter, Ads have been played.

Game length is largely irrelevant to foxtel

yet that’s where afl got most of the extra money apparently

nrl needs someone else to bid for the pay tv rights

sadly for whatever reason foxtel is using the nrl to help it pay overs for the afl

Wait to see, We need at 12 months of the NRL deal to see the breakdown

Then similar in 3 years time for AFL to see how far the gap is

Game length doesn't matter if people tune out

Lets say the AFL's Super Sat is the same format as NRL

3 games is 9 hours compared to NRL's 6, Then throw in it is qtrs and not halves.

That is assuming the same amount of subs for both sports, NRL comes up for grabs 4 years sooner so enough time to see where the other players sit

How long are the qtr breaks in AFL?

Plenty of extra time to Sportsbet ads too

grow up. Great we’ve got lots of people sat at home watching telly. That’s clearly producing an outstanding Outcome for the game!

Game length is a bs reason imo

foxtel don’t charge by the hour and they provide a good chunk of the money for both sports

it’s all down to how many people pay to watch each sport

even on fta the rights are similar

Subs drives PayTV but once you have those subs. The model works very similar to FTA with ratings driving advertisement, Having qtrs gives you more chance to sell more ads to the 400k people

So on summary.... Vlandys has completely f.cked up... I said after a few months of his admin that he'd set the game back 10 years. If he can't get more than the AFL he's tenure has been an abject failure. From what he has done to international league, to the digital sector, the stupid rule changes, and now this...

So yeh if that’s not proof rugby league is number one I really don’t know

and this doesn’t include nz which would add over 7 million more for rugby league and also another 7 million with the phins entry

we can look forward to a tv deal which doesn’t involve Telstra spending a billion in contra
