An update on Latrell Mitchell's recovery - Rehab Report: https://www.rabbitohs.com.au/news/2022/04/19/an-update-on-latrell-mitchells-recovery--rehab-report/

Good call by Trell and the club to have this procedure now. Glad it's not going to delay his timeline so really good call.

The rest of that report sounds pretty positive apart from Cartwright, that sounds concerning to me.
Cartwright has been and is the biggest dud and waste of money, always injured, not heavy enough for a forward too slow for a back and when on the field mistake ridden

From the Daily Telegraph, fantastic idea from the club!!

NRL 2022: Latrell Mitchell to consult top American doctor in bid to sort out hamstring issues

Souths are flying Latrell Mitchell overseas to consult one of the world’s top medical specialists in a bid to have the Rabbitohs superstar fit for Origin I and safeguard his NRL career.

As Latrell’s brother Shaq prepares to make his NRL debut against Manly on Friday night, News Corp can reveal Mitchell is ‘Coming to America’ with the Rabbitohs ace to depart Australia next week for urgent tests on his damaged hamstring.

Rabbitohs officials confirmed the club was looking at potential destinations in America and Germany as they attempt to expedite Mitchell’s hamstring rehabilitation and ensure he stays on the field once he recovers from his latest setback.

But the parties have settled on the States. Mitchell will fly out to Philadelphia for a meeting with leading American medico Bill Knowles, a “reconditioning specialist” who has worked with some of the world’s best sporting teams and athletes.

Knowles’ notable athletic clientele includes Tiger Woods, Andy Murray, NFL legend Peyton Manning, English rugby great Jonny Wilkinson, AFL star Nic Naitanui and baseball’s Alex Rodriguez.

The American guru has also consulted for English football giants Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal, NFL’s San Francisco 49ers, England rugby and the Australian Institute of Sport.

Now Mitchell is joining Knowles’ star-studded stable as South Sydney seek the best medical advice in the world to ensure their champion fullback makes a swift return.

It is understood the Rabbitohs are pleased with Mitchell’s progress so far, but want to leave no stone unturned to protect the two-time premiership-winner’s long-term career.

Mitchell first suffered a torn hamstring tendon in his season-ending setback against Parramatta in 2020. He suffered a fresh tear to the same tendon against the Dragons three weeks ago, leaving the Blues matchwinner racing the clock to be fit for NSW’s series opener against Queensland on June 8.

South Sydney head of performance Travis Touma was in charge at the Roosters when the club sent Mitchell’s former NSW teammate Blake Ferguson to visit Knowles.

Souths physio Eddie Farah discussed Mitchell’s hamstring recovery on the Rabbitohs’ website this week. The Origin ace also underwent minor surgery to fix a niggling injury.

“Latrell underwent the knife again to have a clean-out on his knee,” Farah said.

“The hamstring injury allows us some time to clean up a niggling injury. Pleased to report surgery went really, really well.

“Latrell is up and about, bouncing around, and feeling much better already. We just started the rehab process and he has been strengthening that knee as well as the hamstring.

“He is tracking well and on track for a return to play in the middle of the season.”

The Rabbitohs had also investigated another option — sending Mitchell to famous German doctor Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt, who has treated the likes of Usain Bolt, Ronaldo and David Beckham and Australian duo Sally Pearson and Harry Kewell.

Dubbed ‘Healing Hans’ for his remarkable success rate, the 79-year-old was Bayern Munich’s chief medical officer for 40 years and counts some of the world’s biggest sporting stars and celebrities among his clientele.

Aside from helping Olympians and the giants of football, Muller-Wohlfahrt has also treated superstar entertainers Bono and Pavarotti for various ailments.

Australians have also gravitated to the German, most notably AFL players Ben Reid, Max Rooke and Collingwood star Jordan De Goey, who visited Healing Hans as he sought to overcome a hamstring problem in the lead-up to the 2019 grand final.

Healing Hans is known for his left-field treatments, having used honey and blood from calves and goats, which he injects into the injury site.

The world’s best athletes swear by his Mad Scientist methods, with Bolt and Pearson lauding his work.

But the Rabbitohs have opted to send Mitchell to Philadelphia. It is unknown how long he will stay, and the precise treatment he will undergo, but South Sydney are confident Knowles will deliver peerless medical advice.

Brisbane-based physiotherapist Brien Seeney, who runs the popular NRL Physio social-media account, believes Mitchell can recover in time to take on the Maroons in Origin I.

“Mitchell’s injury is a partial tear to the hamstring tendon, and unfortunately tendon damage has slower healing times than muscle due to limited blood supply,” Seeney said.

“He required repair surgery on the same hamstring tendon at the end of the 2020 season after he tore it completely off the bone, which further complicates the rehab process.

“His availability for Origin I is looking good at this stage, but with a re-injury rate of up to 30 per cent for this type of injury, Mitchell has got some challenging rehab ahead of him to minimise risk upon return to play.”

An update on injuries ahead of Round 9: https://www.rabbitohs.com.au/news/2022/05/03/an-update-on-injuries-ahead-of-round-nine/

From Sporting News,

Rabbitohs coach explains Latrell Mitchell's mid-Season US trip

South Sydney Rabbitohs superstar Latrell Mitchell will fly to Philadelphia this month, with the hopes of fixing his ongoing hamstring and knee issues.

The 24-year-old has been sidelined in recent weeks after suffering his second major hamstring injury in the past two years, after injuring the same leg towards the back-end of 2020.

Latrell has also undergone minor knee surgery to clean out a lingering issue, with the Rabbitohs star now set to miss at least the State of Origin series opener on June 8th - but it could potentially be longer.

Reports surfaced over the weekend that Latrell would be heading to the United States to visit a rehab specialist, and his coach Jason Demetriou confirmed the news on NRL 360 on Monday night.

“Yeah (he is going) for treatment on the hamstring and knee," Demetriou said.

"It’s just intensive rehab – he will spend 10 days with one of the best rehab specialists in the world.

"He's done a lot of work with the Premier League. Travis Touma, our head of high performance, said he is unreal. He has sent Blake Ferguson there in the past, so he has some experience with him.

"It just gets Latrell out of the bubble as well and he gets to focus on himself and come back.

"We will leave no stone unturned."

Latrell is one of South Sydney's most important players, excelling at fullback since joining the club two seasons ago.

But his injury and suspension woes have since become an issue, with the NSW and Australian representative missing for the past two finals series.

Demetriou said the aim of his trip to Philadelphia was to make sure the hamstring and knee issues he is dealing with don't remain a factor later in his career, but also to give the Rabbitohs their own peace of mind.

“I think it’s for all of us as," he said.

"For him to go over there and get that experience and that rehab that he needs...but he’s only 24 and turning 25 this year.

"We want to make sure it’s not a career-defining problem, it’s a problem we have dealt with and get on the front-foot with and he’s able to play the rest of his career and well into his 30s."

South Sydney have gone 4-4 inside the opening eight rounds of the year, but after a shaky start are beginning to find their rhythm in attack.

Demetriou is hoping the side can continue to build despite Latrell's absence and allow him to come back into a winning football side.

“We started slow, we were a bit clunky," he said.

"I feel like we’re starting to get to where we are capable of getting. We lost two of those games by a point – one of those games in golden-point to Melbourne.

"Although we’re not sitting exactly where we want to, we are heading in the right direction.

“If we can get through this period and pick up some results and Latrell comes into a team that’s travelling well, he is only going to add to that.

"The main thing is to get Latrell back and firing on all cylinders."

Latrell Mitchell set to embark on 10-day US recovery mission in bid to fast-track Souths return

Latrell Mitchell is about to hit the city of the Rocky movies and cheesesteaks in a rarely-taken mission by NRL players, but one considered necessary to help him overcome his hamstring issues.

May 8, 2022 - 6:00AM

Operation Latrell Mitchell is set for take-off.

The injured South Sydney star has packed his bags for the most significant trip of his life, bound for the US to meet a Philadelphia-based miracle worker, who has rejuvenated the careers of the biggest names in world sport.

Mitchell admits he’s anxious.

“I’m not a huge fan of travel unless it’s three hours to the farm at Taree,’’ he quipped during a club corporate event last Friday night.

The trip will include an attempt to meet with Australian NFL giant Jordan Mailata at his home base of the Philadelphia Eagles, as well as cultural and community work with locals, while also documenting his recovery-bid with a travelling videographer.

The Rabbitohs and NSW State of Origin star’s 22-hour journey, from Sydney later this week to the home of Rocky movies and cheesesteaks, is a rarely-taken mission by NRL players, but considered necessary to help Mitchell overcome a crippling hamstring injury and not the least, to try and save Souths’ stuttering season.

In addition to the repair of his hamstring tendon issue, the 24-year-old has also undergone knee surgery during the current period of which he’s been sidelined since April 9.

Mitchell will fly from Sydney to San Francisco, before boarding a connecting flight to Philadelphia where he will work one-on-one with world-renowned sports reconditioning expert Bill Knowles.

Aside from consulting to the most powerful sporting teams across the NBA, NFL and English Premier League, Knowles has helped return the likes of golfing legend Tiger Woods, tennis champion Andy Murray, NFL royalty Peyton Manning, England rugby union great Jonny Wilkinson, former Chelsea star Frank Lampard and AFL giant Nic Naitanui to the top of their respective sporting fields.

It was South Sydney’s head of high performance Travis Touma who instigated Mitchell’s trip to the US.

When working for the Roosters in 2015, Touma orchestrated a similar rehabilitation expedition for former winger Blake Ferguson when he was unable to run due to an ankle injury at a similar mid-point of the current NRL season.

Before visiting Knowles, the Roosters had hoped Ferguson would be fit for selection by round 18 that year.

He returned from the Knowles-trip to play in round 14.

At the time, the trip reportedly cost the Roosters $20,000.

Rabbitohs CEO Blake Solly conceded Mitchell’s recovery mission was out of the ordinary for NRL players, but one the club were eager to explore given their marquee man has been hampered by hamstring injuries since 2020.

“Ultimately we’re focused on giving Latrell every opportunity to get back doing what he loves and that is playing for the Rabbitohs,’’ Solly said.

“Our intent is to make sure that not only is it a good trip for Latrell from a physical point of view, but from a psychological point of view it‘s good as well.

“There‘s a genuine belief based on research from within our high performance team that Latrell will gain plenty from stepping outside his normal schedule at the Rabbitohs and applying some different methods with Bill Knowles.

“I’m sure he’ll also take in some cultural experiences also with the local community.’’

Travelling with Mitchell is Rabbitohs assistant physiotherapist Luke Annesley and the Rabbitohs Digital Content Manager, Sunny Brar.

South Sydney coach Jason Demetriou explained why he was hoping Mitchell’s rehabilitation mission would be a success.

“It’ll be good for him as well to get away and focus on getting himself right outside of the NRL noise that surrounds him constantly so he’s in a great little headspace Latrell,” Demetriou said.

“This will be a good little trip for him and we’ll get him back in the second half of the season flying for us which will be important.“It’s just about getting two weeks of really intense work from one of the best physios and rehab specialists in the world.

“Latrell’s a big player for us, he’s had his second problem with the tendon, we’re making sure we’re giving him the opportunity to get back and stay back.”

As for the loss of inspirational lock forward Murray, Demetriou said: “He’ll be out for three or four weeks. It had nothing do with the Karl Lawton incident.

“It’s just a clean-out required after his surgery [over the summer]. It had been annoying him a bit, so we decided to get it fixed rather than push it.

“We’ll miss the work he does through the middle third, he’s a link to our halves and tireless in defence, but we’re confident we’ll adjust and cope with it.

“We would have needed to cope without him through the Origin period, so I suppose it’s come a bit earlier for us. I don’t know about Origin I, but he’ll be right after that. Having Jacob Host back allows us to move Jai Arrow there [to lock forward], and he’s a pretty handy replacement to have.”

An update on Latrell from Fox Sports,

LATRELL’S RETURN DATE SET IN ORIGIN BOOST

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have pinpointed the round 14 match against the Gold Coast Titans as the most likely return date for superstar fullback Latrell Mitchell.

The Bunnies no.1 is currently on a two-week trip to the US for treatment on his injured hamstring after picking up the injury in round five against St George Illawarra.

If Latrell makes it back in time for round 14 it means the gun No.1 will get one game under his belt before NSW pick their side for State of Origin II.

The Bunnies have shown how serious they are about getting their backline strike weapon cherry ripe by outlaying $50,000 to send him to the US for treatment.

In more positive news for the Blues, The Sunday Telegraph can reveal key forward Cameron Murray is poised to make a shock return to the field, after originally being considered little chance of being fit for Origin selection.
Just 11-days after undergoing shoulder surgery, the South Sydney captain is on track for a rapid recovery and is aiming to lead the Bunnies next weekend.
