Just very different structures. Bulldogs are a good example. The football club is designed to make a loss. As the football club controls the leagues club, and thus can get grants as required. The whole leagues club situation means a lot of clubs work differently to there AFL counterparts who have all those functions are the football club umbrella, while NRL clubs don't.

Perth Red believes that football clubs making a loss is a sign of poor management given the amount of the NRL grant …. It’s funny that two of the biggest loss makers are Penrith and Canterbury ..two of the most successful on field teams these days .. but of course junior development and elite coaches come at a price

The Entity is actually Penrith Rugby leagues club, it’s in the name, lots of Penrith fans go to the club to watch games , consume food and drinks. Those items are included in fc revenue at the stadium, they also have a hotel that travelling fans from the country can stay at

The parent entity is Penrith Rugby League Club Ltd
The football club is Penrith District Rugby League Football Club Limited.
and there are separate reports for the football club and consolidated for the leagues.,

That said the same arrangement exists for Parramatta, Canterbury, Cronulla, North Queensland, Canberra, Easts.

The football club data is useful, but not entirely essential. Ive not got a lot of time for people who cant see the relationship between leagues and clubs for what it is.

Let’s include news ltds revenue in broncos then lol

News Limited has a lot of shares in the Broncos it is not the parent company of the Broncos. Unlike say, Valimanda which is the parent company of the Melbourne Storm. (and is entirely private and doesnt issue reports)

I'm not aware of the AFL situation. Do their big clubs have assets even if they don't run leagues-style clubs? I would assume they do otherwise where are they spending all their money?

Most AFL club assets are their training facilities - Carlton and Brisbane have the bigger pokies facilities (in an AFL context), Richmond have gone hell for leather on Leisure centre management. Wasnt until the last 20 years or so that the clubs started moving away from the Council owned facilities theyve had for a century or more. Diversification out of football is still not a huge priority for either the AFL or its clubs.

And surely the relationship is to support and grow rugby league (and other community projects) at all levels in the clubs catchment area including the NRL team otherwise why are they sinking $10s of millions to sustain them as was the case with the Eels when they had to move to Olympic park during the stadium rebuild

Leagues clubs fund probably a hundred million in juniors and other rugby league programs which other sports have to cover out of their own pockets

Think afl have two leagues club in qld (Southport and cairns) who fund their local fumbler comps

Money saved by the arl allows them to spend elsewhere like investing in hotels

Well that's only happened recently. They used to spend all there cash. So if the NRL made a profit, it would be reinvested into the game. But COVID showed that was a stupid move. So the NRL is now investing in stuff in case somethign else happened in the future, the game would be able to sustain itself during that period.

The AFL have no leagues clubs of their own. Almost no leagues are funded through pokies and leagues clubs.

AFL Cairns has a pokies venue, but its owned by the local league, not the AFL (and their assets include Cazalys stadium). Southport have a pokies venue, but its not owned by the AFL or the local league and it funds only itself and its own club.

ACT teams, particularly Belconnen, Eastlake and Ainslie have venues of their own, but not funding the league, only their own clubs.

But plenty of clubs have themselves in NSW and QLD have pokie licenses to fund there own AFL club, no different to how Rugby League clubs fund there programs.

I used to live on Hampton st, Croydon Park, down the end of the road is the Western Suburbs AFL club, had many a drink there.

Nothing has changed then. We used to go down for the boxing cause they would put every big fight on there. And the snooker tables which we would use for pool practice. Used to play pool for the Croydon Park hotel in the 90's. Also got the pub to sponsor my oztag teams. Still it's better than the ex-serviceman's club, I used to play golf for that club.

I think we're making the same point.
