How is it that the Dolphins have been able to build a rivalry with the Cowboys so quickly that draws crowds (2x sell outs in Townsville, 2x 30K+ crowds in Brisbane) yet the Titans haven't?
Wayne Bennett and the front office having a clue.

If you want to maximise the broadcast deal and media exposure (5 days of games) then it would be Monday Night. 5 night games in primetime when viewers watch TV. If you primarily make Friday 6pm a game in New Zealand, the impact of adding Monday in terms of attendances is minimal, as it's an 8pm Friday kickoff in NZ.

Otherwise it would be Thursday, Friday 6pm (NZ games), Friday 8pm, Saturday 3pm, Saturday twilight, Saturday night, Sunday 2pm, Sunday 4pm and Sunday night.

Five days of games could be overkill. It may work for the first month of the season with the heat and daylight savings though. A wet Monday night in the middle of winter wouldn't be appealing to attend a game.

Also it may come down on who gets the rights. If Ten/ Fox or Ten/Paramount somehow acquires it, then there's a possibility of a Sunday schedule of 1pm, 3pm and 5pm or 5:30pm. With Ten having the 3pm game, followed by their news at 5pm, it could be a benefit to the code because the Sunday night game on Fox or Paramount could kick off an hour or hour an a half earlier.

It fits in well with the broadcasters, and a 5pm or 5:30pm game is still a reasonable time for people to attend.

Having said all of that, Nine will probably get it again...

Personally I hope when it goes to 18 they use the extra game on Sunday, basically ensuring there are 3 games each on a Saturday & Sunday for every full round.

I can see them going back to Monday nights though, if not for game 9 then game 10 if they do expand to 20 teams.

Of course. Channel 10 should go for a Sunday twilight game to boost the lead in to their 7:30pm programming block. The ratings in Sydney & Brisbane alone would be higher than what they get now for the project (yuk!).

At some point - 10 to 20 years - some bright spark - either at the NRL or AFL will cotton on to the fact that if you play two games simultaneously you can target 4 metros. The NRL effectively did this previously on a Friday night. So you could end up with a 7:30pm Sunday game of Brisbane vs Storm in QLD & VIC and Rabbitohs vs Adelaide in NSW & SA.

As for Monday nights, yes they can be miserable but so are Fridays at 6pm on a rainy winter night. And those improve in terms of attendance if they're mostly played in New Zealand most weeks at 8pm, so it's essentially swapping one for the other.

If you want more money you have to give broadcasters what they want and what they want are primetime slots.

Interesting point targeting 4 metros in the one timeslot. Down the track, there might be Brisbane v Storm or Souths (Sydney team) v Perth played simultaneously. Unfortunately there is only one team in Melbourne and possibly in the future one team in Perth.

Storm and Perth would have to play every week on the same day

The AFL literally did this last night. And most saturday nights since 2011.

That's just an example, not what would have to happen every week. It doesn't even need to be 4 metros. Even 3 - Sydney, Brisbane & 1 other out Melbourne or Adelaide will result in a timeslot win on a Sunday night because the East Coast has most of the population.

I was talking about the specific Sunday night primetime slot. No sport has done it in Australia even though it's a staple in the states. Doing it on a Friday is rare for the AFL. They do it on Saturdays.

Again - I'm talking Sunday nights, the biggest viewing day of the whole week. It's only a matter of time before the lightbulb switches on to do it on a Sunday as other Sunday night programming wanes in popularity.

The AFL switched off both Sunday nights and Monday nights to protect attendance a few years back. Exceptions seemingly the day before public holidays (such as today).

In the AFLs case at least, the clubs derive as much money from matchday and membership as they do from the leagues distributions, they are wanting to protect and grow that somewhat.
