2025 Crowd Watch

The thing that has mobilised dogs fans the most is being shit for 10 years and finally having a team worth turning up for. It's not a formula NRL clubs would look to follow.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they aren't a large supporter base but replicating the crowds this year is unrealistic and expecting it to happen will only lead to disappointment. See souths circa 2013 as another example of a short term burst after many years of failure.

If the dogs can turn this in to consistent 25k season averages over the next 5 years that would be a success.
Being a Dragon's supporter and having a shit side for the majority of the past decade (apart from 2018) and being tipped for wooden spoons or close to it is not a recipe for enticing your fans to go and watch no matter the amount of marketing you do. Maybe I am a bandwagon supporter, but reality is most people want to watch a winning or at least a very competitive side which we are not on a consistent basis.

Like the Bulldogs, the Dragon's have a big supporter base, but if the Bulldogs did not have a resurgence on the field they would not be pulling the crowds they are now.

Not to mention that the MCG Turf is normally replaced after the last summer concert and before the season starts, not 4 or 5 weeks into the season.

The BBL final was on the 27th of January. Stars didn't make the final, but that's when the BBL season finished. The remaining shield games for Victoria tend to shift to Junction Oval in that time of the year.

First AFL game of the season was on March 13. So in February, concerts could be held AND after it, replace the turf. Which would make sense following the last concert. Yes the MCG is busy, but there is a small window to change the turf before the AFL season.

Both north and south general administration areas in the lower bowl are sold out at Allianz for tonight's WSOO game.

There are very few seats left in the other categories on Level 1, with Gold down to single seats, and only Bay 10 in the silver category having any blocks of seats left.

Biggest risk for the game (and most Sydney games this round) is the weather. Up to 20mm is predicted for the Eastern Suburbs this afternoon/evening.

Friday & Sunday are looking pretty horrible as well.

The Canterbury Bulldogs are on track to become the best supported NRL club in Sydney – and possibly Australia, with officials setting the ambitious target of attracting 30,000 fans to every home game, starting with Friday’s heavyweight battle against the Sydney Roosters.
The NRL ladder leaders are proof that on-field success has a direct influence on crowds – the Bulldogs’ flying start to 2025 has seen their average attendance surge to a staggering 35,700.

The 65,503 fans who attended the Good Friday clash against South Sydney helped inflate that figure. But it is still a remarkable increase on the Dogs’ average home crowd of 20,848 last year, and continues an upward trend for the club after it posted an average of 16,243 in 2023 and 13,447 in 2022.
The Sydney clubs are well behind when it comes to game-day attendance, with the Roosters second on the leaderboard with an average crowd of 29,416, boosted by the Anzac Day fixture against St George Illawarra. Then come the Panthers (26,636), Wests Tigers (23,355) – the premiers and Tigers hosted games at Magic Round, while the Panthers also counted Las Vegas – Cronulla (19,123) and Souths (17,195).

Michael Maguire’s Brisbane Broncos remain the biggest drawcard with an average home attendance this season of 41,844 fans, but it is not inconceivable that they could be overtaken by the Bulldogs should Cameron Ciraldo’s men continue their premiership charge – especially with a number of blockbusters on the fixture list in the coming months.
Dogs CEO Aaron Warburton wants to see his club’s average attendance get closer to 40,000, with over 60,000 fans expected for the June long weekend game against Parramatta, the anticipated sellout for the round-21 clash against Manly at Allianz Stadium, and a crowd of more than 50,000 within reach for the round-23 game against the high-flying Warriors.
“It’s certainly our goal to become the biggest club in terms of attendance – it’s always been in us, we just needed to get back to acting like Canterbury before it could come to fruition,” Warburton said.

“We want 30,000 fans at every home game to become the new norm – there’s no reason we can’t do it. You might not know this, but the club retired the No.18 jersey because we consider our fans as our 18th members of the squad. It’s been that way since 2007.
“They’ve kept turning up during the tougher times. It’s nice we can repay them with some good football.

“We’ve still got some big games at home the rest of the year, including Parramatta and Manly, which will mark 30 years since the 1995 grand final. I’ve also spoken with [Warriors CEO] Cameron George and, given their success, he would love to try and get north of 50,000 fans when we play them here on August 9.”
Canterbury have only hosted three games this year, and could have posted a higher average had they not played their first game at their spiritual home in Belmore, which featured wild post-match scenes involving DJs playing impromptu sets on top of shopping trolleys in the back streets, but was also restricted to 17,892 people.

The Bulldogs will celebrate 90 years in existence on Friday, with ten former captains – George Peponis, Chris Anderson, Peter Tunks, Terry Lamb, Simon Gillies, Dean Britt, Steve Price, Mick Ennis, James Graham, Josh Jackson and Andrew Ryan – to take the field before kick-off.
The Dogs and Dragons will on Wednesday be confirmed for next year’s Las Vegas season opener, with the clubs to enter a price-sharing agreement that will see them split the gate takings for the US game and the return leg in Sydney.
Meanwhile, the NRL has informed Canberra that Tom Starling should have been awarded a try, rather than called held by Daniel Suluka-Fifita, and forced to play the ball again during the first half of Saturday’s epic against the Dogs.
The decision had no bearing on the final result, with Canterbury roaring back from 20-0 down at half-time to win 32-20.
lol - let's get to 30k for the first time ever (which would be a phenomenal result) before we start talking about dethroning the Broncos 😂😂😂

Did a bit of an estimate of Dogs crowd sizes for the rest of the year about a month ago. Hard to know with weather and form this far out, but the estimates were based on the dogs staying in the Top 4 and half decent weather for most matches. Already ~5k up on the estimate from Good Friday. I could see it being higher to be honest, with Kings Birthday and Warriors game (talk of 50k) + Sharks round 27 could be massive if it's for positioning.

1. Bulldogs v Titans - Sunday 2pm - 17,892 (KNOWN)
2. Bulldogs v Knights - Sunday 4pm - 24,113 (KNOWN)
3. Bulldogs v Rabbitohs - Friday 4pm - 60,000 (65,305) +5,305
4. Bulldogs v Roosters - Friday 8pm - 35,000
5. Bulldogs v Dolphins - Thursday 8pm - 20,000
6. Bulldogs v Eels - Monday 4pm - 45,000
7. Bulldogs v Broncos - Friday 8pm - 32,000
8. Bulldogs v Dragons - Saturday 5:30pm - 38,000
9. Bulldogs v Manly - Sunday 4pm - 38,000
10. Bulldogs v Warriors - Saturday 7:35pm - 36,000
11. Bulldogs v Panthers - Thursday 7:50pm - 23,000
12. Bulldogs v Sharks - Saturday 7:35pm - 40,000

Total: 409,005 - (414,310)
Average: 34,083 (34,525)

I think 30k average for bulldogs this year sounds about right which would be a major result. Anything above this is gravy.

By your suggestions above it seems doable and even 35k might not be out of the question.

f**k I am tired of the parochial nonsense here sometimes.

Sorry @Jamberoo, you've paraphrased inaccurately here. It has not been ruled out. From this article:

The venue also needs to leave time free between events for turf management.

“There have been no formal discussions about hosting an NRL match at the MCG in 2026,” the spokesperson said.

“However, the concept as we understand it would present challenges based on the heavy event schedule planned at the MCG over the next three years.”

The Victorian government won’t rule out making a future bid for the NRL grand final or helping the Storm secure an MCG home game.

“As Australia’s major events capital, we’re always working to secure major events that boost tourism and support jobs across the state,” a government spokesperson said when asked about the games.

Per the above quotes, this is nonsense.

They played Origin II there last year in front of the biggest rugby league crowd in this country had seen since... the last time Origin was played there. and they squeezed it in on a Wednesday between AFL games played 4 days prior and 3 days later at the venue.
The MCG CEO literally said on radio that it was ‘highly unlikely’ as their calendar is full only add major events during the AFL season, and that they use the week off to resurface the field. Storm may be pushing but I can’t see it happening. Marvel would be much better anyway. Get 45k there before you consider playing at the MCG.

Dragons sold out their first 2 games this year and got about 16k to both, their crowds don’t have much higher to go once they come good again on the field. Even on years they host Anzac Day they won’t ever hit a 20k average in their current setup.

30k average would be a huge result. That would smash the non-Broncos record by about 3.5k and the Sydney club record by about 6.5k.

Not likely another club will get close anytime soon as Roosters, Rabbitohs & Dolphins are the only clubs who have stadium capacity to get to a 30k average.

But isn't Marvel just as busy as the MCG? Granted it doesn't host the Boxing Day test, but has more concerts. According to Austadiums, by count, Marvel hosted 15 concerts last year.

Would be handy if the NRL ever owned a stadium one day.

Yeah weather will effect games 100%.

Tomorrow night sales have slowed down completely, I think people are looking at the weather and hesitating.

Luckily sales were pretty good before the weather was known lol

It's very possible that Sydney club record will be broken by two clubs this year. Roosters are currently on 24,680 for games at the SFS. The home average is higher if you count magic round but I think that is misleading, same as I don't count Gosford at the other end of the spectrum.

Our last two home games against the dogs and souths could be anything if we keep performing and remain in finals contention. We need only to be a chance at finals for the dogs game to be 37k (higher than that really relies on SCG members) and if souths keep putting in a shift there is no reason that fixture won't be 37k too. That would result in a 28,786 average from the first 4 games and the last 2.

Remaining fixtures in between are

Raiders (Sunday Night)
Cowboys (Emergency Services Game)
Wests
Storm (Thursday night)

Raiders is a tough sell in the timeslot but hopefully we can eek out 15k

The cowboys are normally low drawing but that emergency services game got 27k in the same timeslot last year against the raiders. Honouring the nurses this year, let's assume it performs as well

Wests historically draw well at the SFS, weather permitting pencil in 20k

Storm on a Thursday is another tough sell, similarly to the raiders game, hoping to eek out 15k.

That would see an average of bang on 25k at the SFS breaking the record you speak of which would still be a remarkable achievement even though the dogs will better it.
