A conference or pool system, would solve that, play your pool of 4 (5 including you) then everyone else then your pool again, this would create an instant rivalry with teams in your pool, and reason to be playing them twice, and make those dead rubbers near end of season more intense
20 teams = 23 rounds... 8 inhouse pool games, 15 outhouse pool games, add a magic round for an even 24 rounds, 12 home 12 away, let the broadcasters choose the magic round line ups, top 2 from each conference enters finals

That actually sold me on the Conference idea- stops the new season draw wankfest without loosing home and away games against a feature rival. Just lining up the conferences would be another can of worms if the debate in here is anything to go by….

Not really if it's 4 pools like, you just segregate them by which one is furthest away and add the closest teams, eg.
Pool1 = PNG plus Cows, Bronx, Phins, Tans
Pool2 = Storm plus Raiders, Drags, Soufs, Sharks,
Pool3 = Bears plus Riff, Eels, Tigers, Dawgs
Pool4 = Wahs plus Nz2, Chooks, Manly, Nites

Prior to 95, it was 2 pools of 8, every team player each other once, then their pool again. 1995/6 was 5 pools of 4, it’s not rocket science. You played your pool once and then the other 19 teams in the competition
If you could do it back then, you can do it now

Trouble is it was never advertised as such, I think they want to show it like the NFL do with their conferences (showing of the ladder) per pool instead of the past years of the draw just being the draw and everyone just assuming it's somewhat even or not even.
The problem has always been the draw comes out and nobody knows why certain teams are playing each other twice

Pool 3. What a roller coaster that would be.

Yep that was kinda whos left married up to Perth Bears arguably the furthest away, but pool3 is the Western pool, even if there's 4 of them in close proximity to each other in Western Sydney, all of the doing the Perth trip every year, where others probably miss out, kinda evens that out

Northern pool1,
Southern pool2,
Western pool3,
Eastern pool4

Get on the phone to PVL to make it happen. It seems like all the chat atm (eg Jimmy Graham’s Podcast)is to get to 20 teams to play each team once. I would much prefer this setup…….

This will never happen

The NRL are not going to play less games and leave money on the table for TV rights deals. No league in the world is going to play less games, even the NFL recently increased and will likely do so again soon.

I hope you’re right but even V’Landys mentioned this a few months ago on 100% Footy….

“If you don’t have ambition, you shouldn’t be there. Our ambition is to make the competition as fair as possible. The draw would be fantastic if everyone played once, so you need 20 teams for that,” he said.

“Talking about conferences and all those sorts of things is part of the process that we’re going to go through with the business case.

“They are going to be playing less football because at the moment there are 27 rounds. If you go to 19 rounds you’ve got all those weeks we can do other things and that’s where you can fix your problem with the State of Origin.”

Speaking of NSW Cup and Flegg, a quick drill-down into the curtain raiser numbers

- out of 156 games of NSW Cup, 50 will feature as curtain raisers at NRL matches in 2025
- of those 50, fourteen will also feature Jersey Flegg in a triple header
- outside those figures, another ten games are Flegg-NRL paired (mostly Sharks and Storm NRL games, where their NSW Cup feeder clubs are different)
- 10 of 66 NRLW games are paired with NSW Womens Premiership matches

All fixtures across all grades:
